Holmwood House Hotel114 Holgate Rd, YO2 4BB York (Show map) Very good, Score from 89 reviews“Very friendly, convenient parking, good breakfast.”
Robert,
Berkeley
Backing onto a pretty square, this Grade II heritage-listed house within a Victorian terrace has been lovingly restored to retain the atmosphere of a private home with elegant rooms. Holmwood House features a comfortable sitting room with an open fire. Breakfast is their specialty, with a wide selection including Craster kippers. Special diets can be catered for upon prior request. Holmwood House is west of the city walls, which are just a short walk away. The wonderful York Minster and The Shambles, as well as the Jorvik Viking Centre, the Railway Museum and many other attractions are within easy walking distance. It is also conveniently located for getting to the train station, for easy access to the Yorkshire countryside, Scarborough and Whitby, as well as the beaches at Filey and Robin Hood's Bay, and the uplands of the Wolds, the Moors and the Dales. It was a friendly welcome, the staff were very helpful and the food was second to none. Booked a superior room but instead I feel we got a basic room,of which was two single beds.i made it clear in the booking that we were a couple, but credit to the staff they joined the two single beds into a double.

Staff young, friendly and enthusiastic. We stayed during the September heatwave and nearly melted in the heat until we received instruction in the secrets of the room's air conditioning unit; a small card explaining the salient points would have been useful. Our room and bed were very comfortable. No complaints

On arrival we were given a warm welcome and an overview of the area. The room was lovely with a view of the town and breakfast delicious. Being given a key on arrival meant that we were able to come and go as we pleased. Lots of pubs and restaurants within walking distance, York was beautiful and even the weather was good to us.

The breakfast was amazing and there was plenty of choice. The free car parking, enabling us to leave the car whilst we spent the morning in York, 20 min walk to the Centre. The tv was too small for the room and only had the 3 main channels. Although the room had an Air Con unit it would have been nice to be able to open the windows occasionally.

Location fair but saved by frequent bus services to and from the City Centre. The rooms have been very tastefully furnished and kept very clean and tidy. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The only problem is the hotel does not have a lift and climbing the stairs is a problem for the older guest, such as ourselves.

Good location for short walk (15 mins) into city centre. Excellent, well presented tasty breakfast. Owner and staff friendly and helpful. Private parking. Noisy extractor system in upstairs cupboard vibrated through the floor of our bedroom.

From the minute we got there, the service was excellent. We were greeted by a young lady who was really friendly and we were impressed that normally in these places you're greeted by older staff - it felt right from the very start. We were told we had 'the best room' in the place, and it didnt disappoint. Everything was clean, the room was warm and the bed was super comfy. We fell in love with York that weekend, and we'll definitely be back with friends in tow - and will definitely be staying at Holmwood House Hotel. Thanks so much! My only gripe, was the breakfast. The service was fantastic, and the gentleman serving made us feel right at home. The breakfast needed some ooomph, it was a bit boring. There were no beans, or tomatoes, nor choice of black pudding/hash brown and it needed it really. I was impressed however with the choice of other breakfasts, kippers! Excellent!

It was good value for money and a 15 minute walk into York, nice breakfast room, and good choice at breakfast. The hotel is outdated and very unlike the pictures on their website. The bathroom required ripping out and starting again, some furniture had seen better days, and there were cobwebs aplenty.

the owners of the hotel were very welcoming without being overbearing, gave us plenty of ideas for our trip, shopping areas etc, the hotel had a DIY restaurant guide made up from previous guests, excellent when in a place you do not know. Breakfasts times were good and the food and service were excellent. we look forward to visiting in 2012 for another Christmas shopping trip. Many thanks Phil & Julie

The breakfast was excellent and the hotelier very personable. It was located near to the centre of York, as required. The hotel was, generally, a little shabby and tired. Whilst the room was large, clean and pleasant period style it needs attention to its curtains and paintwork.

Comfortable and clean. Friendly staff Unfortunately we had no hot water on the day of arrival or the following morning. When I mentioned this on our departure I was told the boiler was not working. Unfortunate for us but it would not stp me from staying at the Hotel in the future
