If you are seeking the authentic flavor of the West Country then look no further. This picture-book thatched-roof inn is nestled in one of England's most unspoiled landscapes. This lovingly cared for Grade 2 historical registry-listed Heritage Hotel, under the personal supervision of Dee and Gerry Goodwin, combines character, charm, courtesy & cuisine with the warmest of welcomes and generous hospitality. Set on the Atlantic Highway (A39), this Romantic Oasis is easy to find and the perfect base for both relaxation & recreation. The picturesque village of Clovelly, the jewel of the West Country, is a short drive or a delightful coastal walk from the inn, while Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks are within easy reach. The Hoops Inn & Country Hotel is proud of its extensive range and high quality food provided. The menu is varied to accommodate seasonal specialties and is freshly prepared in our own kitchens using the best of garden & local produce. Guests can choose to dine in the candlelit restaurant, in the relaxed bars or, on balmy summer days, outdoors on the covered courtyard. There are a vast array of activities on the inn's doorstep which can be enjoyed throughout the year such as golf, fishing, sailing, hiking, surfing and biking. In addition to the many historic houses, beautiful gardens & quaint coves & villages, The Hoops Inn has more than 8 acres of landscaped grounds for your enjoyment. More energetic walkers and birdwatchers can follow the steps of Henry Williamsons Otter on the Tarka Trail, take a trip to Lundy Island or ramble along the North Devon Coastal Path. This 13th century inn is one of England's most famous, being notorious as the haunt of smugglers and a meeting place for seafarers such as Sir Francis Drake, Sir Walter Raleigh and Sir Richard Grenville. In winter, relax by one of the inglenook fireplaces, warming yourself next to a blazing log fire, where you can imagine being transported back in time to a less complicated age. Today the inn welcomes travelers from around the world and seeks to provide an enchanting experience for guests and warm memories when they leave. Hotel Rooms: 13

The hotel had great character and history, the location was perfect for exploring north devon. The room (room 2) was lovely and large with a great bathroom and luxury bath. The food was good and local ales at the bar excellent also. The staff were friendly and helpfull. Breakfast was nice also. No complaints!

The atmosphere was warm, friendly and welcoming. The room was more than adequate, clean, tidy and value for money. But best of all was the attention to detail from the staff excluding none. Great food too.

Considering the age of the building (we stayed at the main building with thatched roof) the hotel combine the olde worlde setting with modern facilties such as modern bathroom fittings, wall-mounted large flat screen TV. While laughters from down in the restauarnt tended to filter through and the water system "gurgled" a bit, there were no creaky footboards. The food served at the restaurant was very good though not cheap. Overall the hotel was at a location ideal for exploring north Devon

I loved everything about The Hoops, particularly the ancient atmosphere with the modernized convenience and comfort. The staff were extremely welcoming and the food was terrific. Nothing beats a great meal in front of a roaring fire during the bleak mid-winter. And the surrounding area is gorgeous in all directions.

Location was excellent for our purposes. It had a restaurant which provided an oustanding breakfast included in our tarriff as well as an equally outstanding meal in in the evening. The amience was good aand the staff pleasant and helpful. It was obviosly popular with locals and the rooms all seemed full. Car parking on site was very extensive. The bedroom was a little too cold and the corridor outside our room had a musty smell. It felt like the room had not been used for some time and been without heat. When mentioned, the heating was put on immediately but it took some time to become warm enough to be able to sit comfortably. There was an extra blanket in the wardrobe, and this too was needed over night. It was a winter visit so it was not unreasonable to have this type of problem, and we were at the end of a corridor.

Beautiful thatched building, very quirky, cosy and welcoming. Excellent choice of home-cooked food. Beautifully presented. Rooms very comfortable, spotlessly clean. All staff very friendly and helpful. Very relaxed atmosphere throughout. In all a very recommendable place to stay or simply book for an evening meal to enjoy the fine dining.

Food was good quality but poor selection. On the evening we stayed there was a menu of 7 main course selections and 3 weren't available; therefore we finished up having bar food in the main restaurant. Breakfast was excellent. Room was tired and the water wasn't hot enough for a shower, the shower was reduced to little more than a trickle.

My husband and I had a wonderful stay at The Hoops. All the staff were very warm and friendly and nothing was too much for them. They were always very accomadating. The location was perfect for us and The Hoops offered everything which was advertised. Looking forward to planning our next trip to The Hoops Inn and country hotel.

Friendly staff, comfortable room and modern bathroom. Breakfast was very good, plentiful and not at all greasy which is often the case in other hotels. My bacon and sausage were browned exactly as I asked for.. We did not have dinner as prices were rather expensive but judging by the breakfast I expect the quality would have been good. Good night's sleep with no noise from road. My only comment would be that as a smoker there was no obvious provision for a sheltered area outside to smoke-if you sit at an outside table in the courtyard there are small orange buckets for ashtrays but the seats are damp and foliage drips on you.

A picturesque & charming country inn, ideally placed to access the North Devon costal path. The accomodation was excellent and the cuisine was superb ( both breakfast & evening ) The staff were very pleasant and accomodating and the fact that our two dogs were allowed to stay ( with use of one of the bars whilst with them ) was an added bonus! All in all a very enjoyable weekend which we would gladly do again.

The room was very clean and pleasent, pleanty of choice on the bar menu, good selection of real ale and wines. We had to wait for our bar meal due to venue being very popular, it was also half term with a lot of families eating around 7.00pm , by 8.30 pm is was all vey quite.

The atmosphere, location, friendliness, food, surroundings and value for money Breakfast table settings were a little chaotic. It wiould be better if tables were reserved per room. Guests were sometimes left to find themselves a space, and sometimes there were not enough cereal bowls, glasses, orange juice and milk put out. Although there was plenty available when asked for.
