Score from 117 reviews Superb
Allocated room was poor state. Given another much better room with no problems. All staff were most friendly polite and professional.
The hotel is still being upgraded so although shabby in some areas this is being addressed .
Staff very friendly and accommodating. Location very handy for the town. Current refurb very nice - downstairs so far.
TV only worked on one channel. Shower a bit of a poor affair - not much power!
Room was lovely and the hotel was very nice and comfortable. The breakfast and restaurant food was very good quality and staff were helpful and friendly. Good value for money certainly, and a great place to stay.
Hotel lacked a few pictures/walls a bit bare and the bar/restaurant was a little bland/lacked atmosphere. (I think there used to be a real coal fire in there once which helped.) The hotel was also a little mean on towels and toilet roll. But overall, it was a really decent place to stay.
Location good and staff helpful Nice breakfast
Bedroom could have been cleaner -( chewing gum stuck on window sill ) no bulbs in bed side lights or towels in bathroom . Initially allocated room with double mattress occupying the bath . All the above put right by the staff ,but felt rooms should have been checked and ready for booked guest .
Excellent bar and restaurant staff. Very good breakfast. Lovely clean rooms. Comfortable bed. A very personable night porter who should go far.
Location for the town was good, Breakfast was excellent and very quick and efficient, good variety
Room was quite tired looking but they are doing the place up. Staff were very friendly and helpful.
New management had just taken over when we visited The Lion Hotel, and had started refurbishing the downstairs areas during our stay, although there was some disruption it was minimal and we enjoyed our visit. We had breakfast in a different room everyday. The breakfasts were very good. We hope to revisit to see all the changes/improvements that will have been made to this Hotel.
Bedrooms at the front of the hotel are in need of double glazing, lot of traffic noise. We were advised that once downstairs was completed then the bedrooms will be refurbished.
Very good value for money, Ideal location for sight seeing
This is not a dislike, but when the upgrades are finished it will be the hot spot in town.
Location, character of building, breakfast and staff
Difficulty opening window, noise of plumbing, pillows could have been changed, bedside light should have been checked as lighting in the room was dim
nice bathroom comfortable bed tastefully refurbished bar excellent breakfast greatly value closeness to station and bus stop very helpful staff
some things not yet modernised handle fell off flush TV remote not tuned to TV no signs to room 3 single glazing / traffic noise
Good comfortable room, very good service, very good breakfast. Good location, good private car parking, although exit via a movable post was not good, perhaps a coin drop would be better, and less time for staff changing the code daily. Dog friendly (it was made clear where the dog could go) We will return, !!!
Only small things, like no opening window, Hairdryer cable short and wired though drawer.(room 10) Could have had the menu in the room which may have made us stay in, and not eat out. Looks like some building works at the rear but I am sure its all improvements
New owners have already had an impact on the hotel. We stayed with a 6 month old and had no problems at all. Lovely breakfast
Good breakfast, friendly staff, convenient location
Noise from adjacent petrol station for about 2 hours in the early hours of Saturday morning!
Shower head was not secured properly, kept falling down
The staff were so helpful and totally made the visit to this hotel, customer service excellence. Food was superb also really great quality, tasty and well cooked.
Hotel is being refurbished so there was some disruption and noise, hope the bedrooms/bathrooms get some TLC as they are a bit dated.
The service was excellent Clean and tidy hotel
All the staff were enthusiastic and keen to please and we spoke to one of the new owners who spoke of his plans. He had only bought the property 2 or weeks earlier and had already decorated the downstairs to a high standard and spruced up the outside of he building so it all looked good. Future plans include a major refurb, opening a new restaurant within the next fortnight , an improved dining experience for casual diners and guests. We liked the food at dinner and breakfast. We also liked the bar. It was a quick overnight stay but we felt most welcome.
Nothing negative at all.
We stayed after a trip to Alton Towers. It was easy to find and the new owner was a delight to speak to
Breakfast service excellent Price Team
Middle of refurb No water in room Only one tea bag Shower needs update
Nicely decorated. Can see the changes you are making. Could be a place to stay. Good staff.
My location over the exhaust fan
great breakfast and comfy rooms with shower
nothing much wrong to say about the place
Staff were very helpful and showed interest in me not just as a customer but as a guest
Lights from an adjacent building shining into the room all night
Restaurant staff were excellent as was the food. Top marks to chef and helpful waiter.
My complaints about bathroom light bulb and TV remote dead batteries were ignored. It transpired that a management change was taking place that day.
Food was really excellent Good selection of quality wines Bed was big, comfy and clean Room had usual facilities including hairdryer, iron and ironing board Price was excellent - great value for money Staff very friendly Other guests in restaurant friendly, helpful and chatty (they were locals)
Found hairs in drawers Broken toilet pull, mould and limescale on shower suggesting not cleaned No remote control, then remote provided didn't work Guests in neighbouring room very inconsiderate, dirty and loud (not hotel's fault but perhaps is suggestive of clientele) Dirty spoons - had to change Broken window in room 3 guests at breakfast got wrong order given to them (including me) Couldn't get WiFi in room
Breakfast was excellent in variety, quality and content. Hotel location good.
There was a party on in a function room below ours, and although it didn't finish too late, the doors to the adjoining corridor were open letting noise spread up to our room. A lift would be useful.
