Perfect location for getting around London. Clean comfortable , staff friendly and very helpful.
Bit chaotic at breakfast, food not restocked, not much choice as some empty dishes, but enjoyed what we had. Evening meal interrupted by fire alarm, food appeared to have been reheated.
This comfortable, friendly hotel made us very welcome and entered into the 'surprise ' for my husband even placing a card a nd cake in our room. The bar was relaxing for our family get together, breakfast was good and location just right.
Having to pay for wifi! A shower was reluctant to get hot, but it was sorted when we notified the reception.
Was a present for my fathers birthday and they gave him a wonderful room and little home made treats and even a card on his arrival! Li also stayed there to check it out and the breakfast room is gorgeous and staff at breakfast were friendly and cheerful and the whole hung was an absolute pleasure!
After making my father feel so special anything throat was a problem faded into the background
The staff. Both courteous and friendly. The bar is also good and the breakfast excellent value. The check in and check out were excellent and the concierge most helpful. Indeed few hotels are as good as Hotel Russell in this respect.
Dirty windows and single glazing. I realise it costs to renovate and the difficulties of what I suspect is a listed façade but it makes the old place look dowdy and indeed not much different from my first ever visit in 1963 !
The location was fantastic, across the road was a Tesco express. A cafe was next to the station that served a good English breakfast as well as loads of other things, good value for money. The hotel staffs were all very welcoming and didn’t wait long to be severed. I would stay here again, but would ask for a room on a higher floor or not facing on to the road.
We were one the first floor facing a side road. The window didn’t close proper and the traffic noise kept me awake most of the night, even though I had ear plugs in. I was completely shattered the following day. The bathroom was a little on the small size, this wouldn’t have suited a larger person.
the location is great and it is one of the few hotels where you can get a large room for less than £200 (on some days)
while I had breakfast the cleaning staff entered my room and apparently though I had left even though my suitcase and laptop were still there - they unplugged my laptop and even put my cloths into the suitcase... all I got was an appology, but not even a reassurance that this would be reported to housekeeping so not to happen ever again. the carpet in the room was really old and dirty; the rest was fine and clean though.
2nd room we were moved to was very nice, apart from the mixer tap was very loose on the sink wobbled alarmingly when you used it. Did not dare go and complane as had already been moved once. We did enjoy our stay and would at Hotel Russel again. Breakfast excellent.
On arrival we upgraded to a superior standard room, First room given on the first floor the view was of air conditioning unit very loud noise coming from it, the bed duvet had black hair all over it. It looked like animal hair and there was dried pasta on the carpet next to tea making facilities, someone needs to make sure rooms are hooverd after each guest leaves.
Location and staff
No hot water one morning
There was not a single thing to dislike. All brilliant.
The shower. Torrent of freezing water all over me and the floor- no way to control the direction - terrible shower. The room was shabby and far too small for a double.
Breakfast q lack of choice no one seeming in charge
Lovely facade Good location - handy for the tube
Lovely facade and reasonably impressive interior belies a series of miniscule rooms with even smaller bathrooms. Stained carpet, furniture that had seen better days, windows that hadn't been cleaned in years, and a bathroom suite of dubious quality. Had been promised a park-facing room at pre check-in but received a dismal little cell at the side of the building instead.
the entrance area and dining hall did have the old and generous atmosphere one expects. close to the underground and bus. good location, very central.
The rooms were very small, the windows old and not closing (traffic noise)..the bathroom totally tiny and needing urgent maintenance, partly dirty (doors). No internet in the rooms and no TV except you pay extra ridiculous high amounts. Absolutely no good value for the money.
It wasn't clear at the time I booked, that they will block the whole sum of money of my stay plus 200 gbp (security deposit) on my card (preauthorized) until the check out time.. And then will be released within 5 working days after I leave.. I found out that in the front desk during the check in steps.. I got it all back in my account. . But this should be clear on booking.com web site
Décor Location Food
The food and service during my stay was good, the bed was comfortable and I was happy with the full sized bath and power shower.
I had a delux double room (634) the wall area around the alcove at the window needs repapered. The paper is coming away from the wall in various areas. There was a medium sized yellow stain on the carpet near the bathroom door. The bathroom was clean expect from the window. The window was covered with a drape however the cleaners clearly do not clean the window area as it was thick with dust and had a slight mould build up. The top of all the lampshades could do with being dusted along with the whole air con unit as when I turned it on the dust blowing off was visible.
Firstly our room wasn't ready on arrival at 2. Then after our suite booking was replaced by another room not up to the quality of the one we were sold on Internet . We had to get changed in another room as we had a prior booking at theatre at 3 pm , and didn't know where we were staying until we arrived back at 10 pm , the room we were given had a leaking bath , cracked glass sink , windows were rotten , we were so upset at the room changes due to the fact our room we booked wasn't available or ready !
There was a fun instead of air-condition in the room, i have made a complaint and they said they could not do anything as the electrical people does not work over the weekend perhaps I arrived in a working day in a very hot day and the fun was already there. For a 4 star hotel I expected more than the excuse they gave. They have not offered to change my room just asked me if want a fun.
We have fond memories of this hotel as we regularly stayed here 5- 8 years ago whenever in London. For this reason we chose it again last week, especially attracted by a good sunday rate for a Junior Suite . The beautiful classic building is unchanged externally, likewise the classic lounge-bar. Therefore we were even more dismayed by the refurbished bedrooms. Our so-called junior suite was on floor 7, modern and souless with laminate floor, Ikea style, flat pack furniture with hanging space but no drawers and no sofa...quite uninviting. We asked to see a different room and the receptionist did his best but the alternative ( a double)was almost identical just a bit smaller. The receptionists room description was 'art deco' , mine would be 'Ikea' .... ( art deco might apply to Claridges but certainly nit the Russell) . As it was already 8pm we had little choice but to accept. We would point out that the customer service staff on duty next morning respected our concerns and offered a free upgrade IF we should decide to stay again.
Wi-fi additionally paid
service at breakfast was very good
There were steps to get up to our room which made our visit very difficult. In addition there was a pub behind our room and we were told nothing could be done about the noise. In addition the room was dark and a request for an additional lamp was ignored
food in bar
The grand entrance and staircase was incredible. Bed was very comfortable and staff were very friendly. Bathroom was a little small but shower was good size. Easy check in check out process. Didn't eat there so cant comment on food.
Didnt like that on their site the breakfast times werent displayed. we had an early train to Paris but missed out on breakfast we had included in our package because it started too late
Staff were very good and helpful from start to finish. The disabled facilities in my room were also very good and spacious.
Prices were a little expensive overall
