The building has a magnificence not found in other central London hotels where we have stayed. It was obviously built up to a standard rather than down to a price and retains that flamboyance of its youth. Even details like the purpose-woven carpets enhance the ambiance.
The electronic bedroom locks leave a lot to be desired - we were by no means the only ones to find them almost impossible to negotiate. Staff gave various 'reasons' which were simply excuses for a malfunctioning system - we twice had to come down from the sixth floor to get them sorted even after the keys had been changed. A very important detail which needs proper rectification.
Can't beat location. Hotel exterior, lobby and staircase were all very grand. Lovely view from room overlooking square. Porters to carry luggage and hail cabs.
Room had been updated in 1980s/90s and was showing some serious wear everywhere; inelegant and contemporary; inconsistent with the period style of the hotel.
The location, room cleaneess, friendly and efficient staff at check in desk ,marvellous bathroom
Lack of WiFi in the room (available in every cafe around the corner so why pay in the hotel?)
The room was beautiful and comfortable.
Our expirience at the restaurant was horrible to put it mildly. We spent an hour and a half there and in that time sent back a martini served room temperature, watched a server get reprimanded and never received our food. The couple next to us, who arrived a half hour after us received their food before us and than sent it back because the chicken was raw!!!!! Raw!!!!!! I apologize to the hotel staff because they were kind but the restaurant staff ruined our experience.
The hotel has some beautiful architecture
Most of the decor is tired and shabby looking, probably not the best value for money in that part of London
The location right near the Russell Square tube stop was most convenient. The staff were very helpful although at times not able to answer all queries. The room was comfortable and quite large. The public rooms of the hotel are very luxuriant and make quite an impression. We didn't have the breakfast plan at the hotel but found this wasn't a problem because there are many coffee shops in the area.
Most of the staff were not from the London area and sometimes unable to answer questions that a Londoner would know. There was only one normal sized elevator. the other 2 were very small. The prices of drinks in the bar were very expensive.
Location was great.
Felt that it should be cleaner; mold in the shower, carpet was not flush on the floor, mold on the window, old fixtures and old furniture. For the price it seems that it should be better maintained.
Bad solution to room problems Change Room And the newone was dirty No soluntion at this time
Beautiful hotel with tradition, close to underground, Several good restaurants near the hotel, near the British museum. Spacious rooms. Good value for money in London. Very recommendable if you enjoy peaceful and traditional hotel.
Love the building! No 'music' in the bar.
breakfast a bit pricey - I went elsewhere.
The Hotel Russell is fantastically located close to a number of useful services and tourist destinations in London. Is is less than five minutes walk from the closest Underground station, and less than five minutes walk from some superb eating places. The eating places include this of a restaurant nature and those that can be used for a quick simple snack. There is also a supermarket. Located easily within walking distance is the British Museum. Across the road is a park that can be used for relaxation. The buffet breakfast is superb.
Was very noisy at night and old windows in the building do not protect you well from outdoor noise
No complaints. Good break
Can't fault the place, excellent stay for the night. Stayed in junior suite, great views and great comfort.
Proximity to hop-on-hop-off busses excellent. Blue line at Russell square which joined red and yellow lines. Tesco shop and eating cafe Pret a Manger close by.
Our room over looked the internal light well containing all the exhaust fans and mechanical Services. We stayed four nights and consideration should be given to patrons staying more than one night.
Don't have a front room. Very nice by day with views over the park. BUT lots of traffic noise at night as vehicles, including heavy lorries, stop and start at two sets of traffic lights.
horrible wifi connection! I could not work
Everything was fine,The rooms ,The food, the staff are first Rate, Very plessent and helpfull
Get ready for a tiny room and the narrowest ned you have ever encountered in your life + extremely expensive internet. This is definitely by far not the most comfortable hotel at this price level in London.
Size of room was excellent Staff mostly helpful but concierge staff particularly helpful
Breakfast was low quality rather like refectory food - dilute reconstitued orange juice, tinned fruit, average yoghurt, average cooked breakfast. Some staff simply ignore you in the corridors.
The service from the concierege was excellent. He booked us into tours that were listed as sold out. English breakfast was excellent.
English Tea was FAAR to expensive compared to other area hotels. Very poor value.
Very good location, comfortable bed.
My room was oddly shaped and the furniture was too big for the room. Difficult to open windows.
Location, courteous staff
Furnishings of a so-called 4 star deluxe room were rather college-dorm style with tired dull coverings and inadequate bedding - meaning nothing I normally would sleep on...
Small bathroom, bath didn't drain properly and when duty manager was called there was a poor excuse for not sorting the problem staight away - would suggest poor maintenance. Reception staff were not very helpful and their English was poor.
