Firstly our room wasn't ready on arrival at 2. Then after our suite booking was replaced by another room not up to the quality of the one we were sold on Internet . We had to get changed in another room as we had a prior booking at theatre at 3 pm , and didn't know where we were staying until we arrived back at 10 pm , the room we were given had a leaking bath , cracked glass sink , windows were rotten , we were so upset at the room changes due to the fact our room we booked wasn't available or ready !
We have fond memories of this hotel as we regularly stayed here 5- 8 years ago whenever in London. For this reason we chose it again last week, especially attracted by a good sunday rate for a Junior Suite . The beautiful classic building is unchanged externally, likewise the classic lounge-bar. Therefore we were even more dismayed by the refurbished bedrooms. Our so-called junior suite was on floor 7, modern and souless with laminate floor, Ikea style, flat pack furniture with hanging space but no drawers and no sofa...quite uninviting. We asked to see a different room and the receptionist did his best but the alternative ( a double)was almost identical just a bit smaller. The receptionists room description was 'art deco' , mine would be 'Ikea' .... ( art deco might apply to Claridges but certainly nit the Russell) . As it was already 8pm we had little choice but to accept. We would point out that the customer service staff on duty next morning respected our concerns and offered a free upgrade IF we should decide to stay again.
Wi-fi additionally paid
service at breakfast was very good
There were steps to get up to our room which made our visit very difficult. In addition there was a pub behind our room and we were told nothing could be done about the noise. In addition the room was dark and a request for an additional lamp was ignored
food in bar
The grand entrance and staircase was incredible. Bed was very comfortable and staff were very friendly. Bathroom was a little small but shower was good size. Easy check in check out process. Didn't eat there so cant comment on food.
Didnt like that on their site the breakfast times werent displayed. we had an early train to Paris but missed out on breakfast we had included in our package because it started too late
Staff were very good and helpful from start to finish. The disabled facilities in my room were also very good and spacious.
Prices were a little expensive overall
old style hotel with kind of a noble appearance staff very friendly
a fancy bathroom but quite a bit too small fairly warm inside the room
Staff welcoming, professional, efficient and friendly; Hotel location very good for either tube stations and buses yet still within walking distance of theatres, Covent Garden, restaurants and much more; Hotel is old and elegent but bedrooms modern, spacious, comfortable and nicely decorated. Variety of foods for breakfast, enjoyable and value for money.
Sometimes a longish wait for lifts at Russell Square tube Station but Holborn Station not too far away to walk so my husband and I often chose to exit there and walk back to the hotel - we are in our 70's
The beautiful traditional building with very good modern rooms. Even my small room was very well planned and I did not feel that it was small. The bathroom space was excellent. Location is very convenient. I loved my stay at this hotel.
The peace and atmosphere were second to none, the staff were so helpful and polite and my stay with you helped immensely toward me living out a lifelong dream of seeing the RPO at the Albert Hall followed by a relaxed evening at the Russell Hotel. Thank you.
Breakfast was not available until 07:00 by which time i was on my way to St Pancrass.
The hotel is very conveniently located, very near the underground. It is in a very nice area (park, cafes, walking distance to Royal Opera House and other theaters). My single room was spacious, which is quite exceptional in London for hotels in this price range!. Very nice, comfortable and clean bathroom and toiletries. Perhaps not important for most people, but I just loved the fragrance of the soap. To me, this also shows attention to detail and care for the guests. Breakfast buffet had ample choice and was good; staff kind and helpful.
There was nothing not to like.
The staff were really helpful and friendly, we only stayed for one night but we were look led after very well. The room was spacious and clean and had a good size bathroom. The location was ideal as the tube station was just next door.
The cost of the breakfast seemed a lot so we decided not to pay extra for this. Also at check in we were told if we did book breakfast then, then it would cost us more in the morning which I felt was unfair as you are a guest there.
Comfortable clean bed and bedding. Staff very friendly and helpful. Fluffy white towels. Quality hairdryer and ironing facilities.
What was described as a recently refurbished modern suite was actually a bit shabby. Needs new curtains and carpet. Wouldn't like to encounter one of the non refurbished rooms if this sets the standards.
Excellent service in restaraunt
Pleasant helpful staff, comfortable room, good location near to a tube station. No comment to make on the food as I don't eat breakfast and we ate out each evening.
A little noisy on the first evening as there was a function on. But it wasn't too excessive and stopped at midnight.
The building has a magnificence not found in other central London hotels where we have stayed. It was obviously built up to a standard rather than down to a price and retains that flamboyance of its youth. Even details like the purpose-woven carpets enhance the ambiance.
The electronic bedroom locks leave a lot to be desired - we were by no means the only ones to find them almost impossible to negotiate. Staff gave various 'reasons' which were simply excuses for a malfunctioning system - we twice had to come down from the sixth floor to get them sorted even after the keys had been changed. A very important detail which needs proper rectification.
The whole experience. Hotel, food, staff etc
Can't beat location. Hotel exterior, lobby and staircase were all very grand. Lovely view from room overlooking square. Porters to carry luggage and hail cabs.
Room had been updated in 1980s/90s and was showing some serious wear everywhere; inelegant and contemporary; inconsistent with the period style of the hotel.
Room was a standard double, it was very clean, modern, nice size. Hotel was beautiful, very upper class, staff were extremely helpful and lovely. Hotel is very central to everything. Could not fault one thing.
Beautiful building Convenient to where I was going but not for tourists in London. Beautiful decor (if you like it old)
The building was grand and old but this doesn't mean that the content of the hotel has to be; menus were a bit stuffy and old.
The location, room cleaneess, friendly and efficient staff at check in desk ,marvellous bathroom
Lack of WiFi in the room (available in every cafe around the corner so why pay in the hotel?)
The room was beautiful and comfortable.
Our expirience at the restaurant was horrible to put it mildly. We spent an hour and a half there and in that time sent back a martini served room temperature, watched a server get reprimanded and never received our food. The couple next to us, who arrived a half hour after us received their food before us and than sent it back because the chicken was raw!!!!! Raw!!!!!! I apologize to the hotel staff because they were kind but the restaurant staff ruined our experience.
The hotel has some beautiful architecture
Most of the decor is tired and shabby looking, probably not the best value for money in that part of London
