Fern Cottage is a delightful bed and breakfast guest house nestling in the heart of the Peak District National Park. The stone cottage lies at the very center of the picturesque village of Castleton.

Score from 193 reviews Very good
Only continental breakfast
Everything especially the big bath and loads of hot water
The fire door for the outside room was a bit tempermental
Double bed felt squashed probably because use to bigger
Spacious rooms which were comfortable and well presented. Good location for access to Peaks and therefore good long energetic walks. Staff very helpful and cheerful.
Decided to eat at the restaurant first night and considered the fayre to be of poor quality.
The food in the evening was average only
Good food in restaurant
Room basic. Should provide full English breakfast for price paid
Staff were very good. Good atmosphere. Good location. Evening meal was very good.
Expensive. Poor continental breakfast. Cooked breakfast should have been included in price. No reserved seats in bar for residents. No reserved parking for residents. No toiletries. Toilet seat was broken.
Excellent location an value for money, lovely comfortable, spacious rooms, friendly helpful staff, plentiful breakfast included in the price to set you up for a days hiking in the peaks! Will definitely be staying here again and would recommend it :-)
Location was excellent as was the team that worked fantastically hard to ensure we had everything we wanted and enjoyed our stay. The food was excellent. The first night we stayed we chose to have a selection of starters rather than a main meal, we would highly recommend the mushrooms and fishcake. Thank you for a great stay. We will definitely be back.
Everybody has a preference to the firmness of the mattress on a bed, for us the bed was too soft/springy. Also we didn't manage to get wifi the whole time we were there, that being said, neither of these impacted on our stay.
Excellent central location with walks and historical places to visit very close by. Pub attached does great food and beer.
The room and the location
Breakfast choice was limited as we went to breakfast at 9am and and some of the breakfast items were not available such has brown bread, bagels and coissants. I did ask but they were sorry they had no more.
Location was great and the bar and restaurant were good. All very easy and laid back, very enjoyable.
Manager had a lousy attitude with my friend when she highlighted something negative about her room to him sadly, which tarnished our stay a little bit, but otherwise it was a very pleasant trip and ideal for our walking holiday.
Large Room Nice Decor Clean Big Bath Comfy Bed
Connection issues with wireless but friendly staff helped to get it sorted
The whole experience of our stay
Wifi could be better
the relaxed yet efficient service good food well presented the central location
the shower screen needed adjustment
Lovely pub with lots of character, in a idyllic spot..food was 9/10 shame there wasn't much on the menu! Room was fantastic lovely and clean!
It was a little pricy..£89 for a 1night stay including a continental breakfast..! Should really come with a cooked one for that price! Apart from the cost couldn't fault it..!
Location - superb walks and scenery on the doorstep! Charming inn - full of character. staff very friendly and helpful., food, cleanliness
Pillows and mattress not very comfortable.Noise from bedroom above in detached accommodation block. Very creaky floorboards - wouldn't have been a problem if inconsiderate guests hadn't spent all evening and early morning literally pacing the floor. Hope proprieter will display a notice asking future first floor guests to show consideration to guests in room below. Small window in room made it very dark even on a sunny day.
location is excellent, staff friendly.
rooms could be cleaner.
Location Food in pub
The extremely dusty room The shabbiness of decor The service in pub (except for one waitress) The lack of choice at breakfast and elusiveness of staff
Location, room style finish and facilities. General feel of premises. Clean
Booking in.... left standing for 10 to 15 mins before see. Breakfast staff offish and could not be bothered.... at least that's the feeling conveyed.
Room food staff village hotel
Annex room verycomfortable but very noisy with a family of 4 above us and with the constant bell ringing from the church next door we got very little restand relaxation. The sound proofing between floors should be given some attention.
Location Comfortable Friendly
Could have been cleaner
Village and walking
Footsteps above room. Tv limited no Tour de France! No wifi.
Location is excellent, staff were (99%) generally helpfull & friendly. We were concerned about staying in a pub but there were no noise issues after 23:00 when the conversation from drinkers sitting outside came to an abrupt halt as the bar facilities were closed. We didn't eat on the premises as we ventured out to the many eateries in the village, however the plates we saw coming out certainly looked nice and seemed to come out quickly enough. The views from the beer garden (on a nice summer evening) would be hard to beat anywhere in the country, looking over village rooftops to the surrounding hills with a dozen or so paragliders floating around for hours on end. Plenty of walks from the village so car not essential. Totally relaxing. Would certainly recommend.
Beds not the most comfortable (sinking towards centre and a bit lumpy), price should in my view include a full choice of breakfast. The bar wasn't stocked with any snacks at all (minor issue, I understand staff can get caught out with ordering/deliveries from time to time). Most significantly, due to a 4 slice toaster at breakfast only having 2 slots working an additional 2 slice toaster was brought into use. Totally unsuitable equipment for a 'public' cooking facility. The outer casing was extremely hot (just as hot as accidently touching a shelf in a hot oven), burnt my thumb quite significantly. Had to stop another resident doing the same as she was about to hold the toaster steady to remove contents by placing 4 fingers on the casing while quickly lifting the handle. The problem being was that small muffins were provided to toast but nothing to extract them from the toasters. Watched one other user 'fishing' them out with two knives! Otherwise it is a case of forcibly ejecting toast with one hand above to catch the bread and the other holding the toaster steady while quickly bringing up the eject handle. A thumb on the casing being required to steady the toaster. Reported it to a member of staff as a concern who didn't appear interested just somewhat patronisingly suggested I should 'use the button'. She didn't ask if the burn needed attention and didn't indicate an intention to take action on the equipment. I'm not a health & safety fanatic but I also pointed out that the 2 toasters were also being operated on a 'fully wound' 13 amp extension reel (without a thermal cut-out) which is a significant fire hazard this was also received with a seemingly disinterested 'ok'. Only one staff member admittedly but this slightly tarnished my view of the business which otherwise provided a good stay which I'd be happy to repeat.
