The Inn With The WellMalborough Road, Ogbourne St. George, Marlborough, SN8 1SQ (Show map)
Fabulous,
Score from 77 reviews
This charming family-run inn has an attractive and tranquil setting in the midst of the rolling Marlborough Downs, with great access to the region’s major road network. The Inn With The Well gets its name from the original well set in the restaurant floor. Bulletproof glass has been used to provide a safe cover for the well, allowing you to stand on top and look down the 30-metre shaft of this impressive original feature. Originally established in 1647, this traditional coaching inn is situated on the Ridgeway path, Europe’s oldest highway. The inn is just off the A346, only 5 minutes from junction 15 of the M4 motorway. Guests can enjoy a range of beers and real cask ales, along with hearty, home-cooked food. All of the comfortable, purpose-built, en suite accommodation is housed in a quiet annex, separate from the main inn. Had a brilliant time, this is our second visit and it is home from home. The staff & owners do everything possible to make your stay relaxed and comfortable. Nothing is too much trouble even when hubby moaned on our last visit about not having a rubber ducky for his bath (stipulated on website) suddenly 3 turned up. The location is good for shopping / sight seeing / doing the touristy things and you are not far from all the Henges if the stones are your thing. The accomodation backs on to a busy main road through to Swindon but you hear no noise and the rooms are cosey and comfortable. The facilities from beds to bath are clean and fresh. The food is excellent, Mike's menu covers everything you would need for breakfast, lunch and dinner and Megan cooks it to perfection. Packed lunches are available but we have not experienced those yet - on the list for next time. Highly recommended for a long weekend getaway from the kids and if you are a coffee addict like myself, The Inn does the best in the County. I have yet to find anything I didnt like or felt uncomfortable with.

Friendly and helpful owners, lovely breakfast, comfortable room. The evening meals in the pub were excellent wqith plenty of choice and beautifully cooked and served. Loved Marley the dog!! Definately not a complaint but would have prefered a proper shower in the bathroom rather than the telephone type shower/taps, which were difficult for us with limited mobilithy to use. However when mentioned to the owners they promptly produced some grab bars for us. Thankyou!

We were staying at the Inn on the Well because we were going to a gig in nearby Marlborough so the pub was very handy and good value. We also had an excellent curry and decent real ale in the bar. There was no hot water for a shower in the morning and we were not asked what we wanted for breakfast, a full English, albeit tasty, arrived spontaneously.

The room we occupied was in an annex which is what we like. The staff were friendly and we were made to feel welcome. The location of the Inn was perfect for a weekend sightseeing in that part of Wiltshire.

Megan and Mike Shaw (and Marley their lovely Labradior) make one very welcome. Initially I wondered if the Inn's proximiity to the main road/village by pass might make the room we had (no 3) noisy but it wasn't to us., The food was fine and quite a varied menu choice. If we needed to stay in the area again we would stay there on this experience. The Avebury Circle, village, church and Manor are well worth a visit. For me it was great going to the area again as I lived quite near there 40 (is it really that long?) years ago.Nioot Nothing of real significance.

The rooms were clean and tidy, with an extra heater if needed. The food in the main was good and plentiful. We only had breakfast once but this filled the gap for us for the journey that day and cooked the way we liked it. Heating outside the pub for smokers. Housekeeper was great the first morning as we woke late and she asked if we wanted towels Pub Dog & Cat great fun We would recommend to others with the exception of the comments below Breakfast times for people staying for none business purposes was too early 7:30 till 8:30 meant we had to get up early to eat, most hotels we stay in are to at least 9 or 9.30. I could not drink hot drinks in the room as the kettle needs a little attention to limescale (sorry!!)

“This was an excellent, well run hotel, especially for the money. Everything was clean, though small, and had all the necessary facilities. The breakfast was also excellent and included in the price. We had water in our rooms together with tea and coffee making facilities. A detail that other hotels that we paid 3 times the amount did not have.” Lorraine, High Wycombe |
