Less than a mile from the historic center of York, this hotel, which was built in 1870, retains stained glass windows and a splendid oak staircase.

Bricks in the path near reception loose
The breakfast was good
Too hot to sleep and the wedding party disco that kept me awake
Communal spaces seemed nice but there was a wedding on so some of it wasn't usable.
The location was the primary reason for staying here as I was attending a wedding in the area. For over £100 a night I expected something a bit nicer. The communal spaces were nice but the rooms are dated. When I opened the door to the room it had a faint smell of mould coming from the bathroom. Not the greatest of starts. It just looks like the rooms could do with updating. I've stayed in much nicer rooms for way less. It could be to do with York being more expensive in general but if that's the reason, it's a 20 minute bus ride into York centre so I didn't find it represented good value for money. I also think that when you're paying over £100 for the room (I think I paid £120) I'd expect some form of breakfast to be included but they wanted an extra £10 for that. We wandered down the road to a nice pub instead. My sister also had a poor experience here as she cut her hand open on the shower fixture which came off in her hand when she tried to adjust it. It was handled fairly poorly as they asked the housekeeper to fill in the forms (must have been their responsibility) but they didn't speak much English and ended up filling in all the details incorrectly. Half an hour wasn't much, but when you're on a weekend away it's lost time spent waiting around. Wouldn't stay again.
It was very nice with a great room.
Staff were friendly
Sensors in ground floor bedrooms. Making you think of security or cameras Bar area is not attractive for eating food Breakfast, if busy is very slow.
Staff listened attentively to our complaints and did their best in the face of no overall manager at present.
It took ages to find our room (418). One of the signs was very high above a door instead of being on the door itself. No lift in this part of the hotel. Insufficient towels for this twin-bedded room. No rubber non-slip mat provided to go in the bath. A notice told us that we could ask at reception - scarcely practical if one has changed into a dressing gown and has to trail down a staircase and across a large lounge to reach the reception desk. The room was badly designed with beds protruding across the hinges of the door and television table covering part of a radiator. A particularly dangerous feature was a metal-capped door-stop in the bathroom. It was exactly where an unwary foot might have landed on getting out of the bath.. Only one arm chair in a room for two people. Nowhere to put my shirts. The wardrobe was too small and, when folded, the shirts would not fit in a drawer. Dining room like an enormous aircraft hangar and it was very cold at breakfast - even the staff were shivering. The dining room colour scheme was bilious. We were invited to sit "in the window", but declined, as it faces onto a brick wall only a few feet away.
Good location - excellent room - substantial breakfast in a lovely dining room
Price of drinks. There was also a wedding there and noise could be heard from our bedroom. It did stop around midnight.
Location Rooms Facilities Late booking out
Customer service was very good and room was a good size. Comfortable bed. Bus stop right outside hotel. Hungry Horse chain pub very nearby for breakfast.
Location a little bit out of York, about 25 minute bus ride but roads are very busy which makes it this long. We thought breakfast was expensive and overall the hotel was a bit pricey for what it was.
Receptionist was welcoming and helpful.
Tired furnishings in bedroom. Very poor service in the restaurant at breakfast. Breakfast very unexciting.
Hotel was in a good location, very easy to find and good access to York via the Rawcliff Bar Park and Ride. Very good hotel with comfortable, clean rooms and good choices at breakfast.
Not the hotel's fault but because there was a Wedding on there wasn't really anywhere quiet to sit in the evening as the wedding party tended to spill out into the bar, reception and lounge areas. It was also quite open and a bit chilly every time the front doors by reception opened. Could do with sectioning off the lounge a bit more and making it a bit more cosy.
Nice grounds Free parking Easy access to town via bus stop outside Nice reception areas Generally clean
Very noisy during night Woken up by guests banging on wrong door Faulty shower caused me to cut myself and end up with an injury Fittings and furniture in room dated/broken For £110 it was poor value for money
situated within easy walking distance to a park and ride. quiet location although on the A19.
our room was above the dining room if there was a function, the noise of the furniture being reset was very loud in the early morning
nice rooms and quiete
evening meals rather expensive
comfortable, clean, good food
Location of hotel was good only five or so miles from York. Bed was extremely comfortable and breakfast was good with a good choice
Shower in room was freezing cold and there was a lot of door banging throughout the night
Comfortable hotel, spacious room, room very clean when we booked in, friendly staff and good food. Great location, but as an independent traveller you really need a car, or plenty of money for taxis.
daily housekeeping not brilliant, room located up 2 flights of stairs at back of hotel
Lovely hotel close to the park &ride for York Very good food.
Nothing I can think of.
Good location Nice big rooms Efficient staff
No hot water in our room!!!
Hotel was nice and clean, breakfast good. Rooms spacious, staff friendly
Bed moved around Food was pricey even in the bar Not much around locally
no sky tv
Pillows were too hard
Location and grounds are good. The first impression of the hotel is good and reception and bar area are pleasant
The room although "quiet room" requested on booking suffered from noise from the nearby railway line and noise from plumbing/heating system. The floorboards were creaky and the decor and furnishings a bit dated. The bed mattress was too firm for my comfort.
