Rooms were nicely set out.Beds were comfortable. Staff were helpful and friendly. Food was excellent. Location was excellent.Good value for money.
Outside our room 18 was grubby by our door and also outside there were at times plastic bags of rubbish? Also other items that possibly came from the kitchen. There was also a lot of noise at times outside our room in the evening-not sure whether it was other guests or staff
Jacuzzi bathtub, outside seating area, breakfast, decor.
The smell of food throughout the entire hotel, from the kitchens. Maybe a few scented candles would help?
The room was lovely. The food was excellent and good value for money. the surroundings inside and out were comfortable, clean and plush. The staff were friendly helpful and polite. To top it of the location was ideal to explore and enjoy York. What more could you ask for.
Ability to drive to drop off at the hotel (although this was not made clear when we booked). Close proximity to all central York attractions and being able to walk almost traffic free throughout the city.
Our room, although excellent, was at the front of the building so suffered from traffic noise.
Quality and location
Our two-day break, really refreshed us and made us feel ready for what was to be a busy family period ahead. We had already stayed in the Lodgings as it is very central. This was before refurbishment, so we decided to choose one of the new 'Garden Rooms' , which we found to be an absolute delight. Being at ground level, really helped my husband who had recently been I'll. The surroundings were fabulous, containing a very comfortable bed with delicious pillows and duvet to sink into! Good design and thought has gone into all of this and the restaurant, bar and staff were first class. Thank you....we hope to return very soon.
brilliant location, fantastic ambiance, excellent service, quiet for a city centre, comfortable bed, dreamy pillows, the candles lighting the staircase, great shower, the maze-like quality of the place and its antiquity. lovely.
the blinds didn't block out all the light, the kitchen fans could be heard from 7 am, for a vegetarian the smell of cooked breakfast was quite nauseating in the garden room we stayed in. if you are veggie don't pick a room on the ground floor!
Clean and comfortable and in a good central position. Friendly staff and good breakfast.
Nice decor, location, bathroom size.
Our room was located beside the hotel laundry and storage rooms, was noisy with staff going in and out outside our room early in morning and late at night.
Great location. Excellent food. Great atmosphere in bar/restaurant. Staff were very friendly. We did have an issue with our jacuzzi bath not working as it should and they very extremely apologetic. When we returned back from dinner there was a bottle of chilled champagne in our room. We will definitely be returning as this hotel was exceptional and worth paying a bit extra for quality.
We loved it all. Highly recommend it to everyone.
Nothing, everything was wonderful
Perfect location, friendly staff, good food and drink, fabulous refurb, will defiantly be going back.
The staff were very helpful even before booking. The superior room was a real treat. The food and surroundings were excellent. We would love to return.
Characterful rooms Excellent breakfast
Cheque book & socks left in room by previous guests !!
Loved the style of modern decor mixed with period features. We had a large room on the top floor with a very comfortable 6 foot wide bed. Delicious freshly cooked breakfast in the delightful conservatory style restaurant. Excellent location within the city walls so you could walk to everything. We ate at Star in the City which was just round the corner, also excellent. Would definitely recommend this charming hotel.
The only negative was that the room was very warm and even with both windows wide open it was difficult to sleep.
It was a really lovely hotel .thoroughly enjoyed it.
Stairs stairs stairs and more stairs
We were greeted on our arrival and shown up to our room by staff. The room was fabulous with a huge bed and jacuzzi bath. Breakfast was excellent and freshly cooked to order and we ate in their evening restaurant too which was also excellent. We will certainly use this hotel again as it is situated perfectly and we would recommend it to others.
The hotel was really hot everywhere even in our room. It was a mild October and I think the heating had been switched on in the hotel but this really was the only bad point!
Staff very accommodating.
Small room facing another window. Hallway carpets very dirty. No access to rooftop terrace. Pictures on website are deceptive.
Well appointed, very comfortable room and excellent location. Pleasant staff.
Our room was at the top of the house so it was a bit of a climb up the stairs. I would suggest requesting a first floor room if stairs are a difficulty
All aspects of accommodation were excellent apart from room location.
Poor location of room.it was next to a staff room and rather noisy early morning and late night (12mn)
The recent refurbishment has been very well done and retained many of the features that give the hotel its character. The staff were very friendly, helpful and professional. Lydia in particular was a star. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble and we felt very welcome.
Not enough hot water at times and a distinct lack of working light bulbs. Both easily remedied.
Food really good Cleanliness high standard
Lack of privacy in the "garden rooms" we had to have the blinds down and even then could hear the drinkers in the courtyard just outside our window
The location of the hotel was fantastic and parking in a near by carpark was only £19 fri-sun. The rooms were tastefully decorated (we stayed in room 8). The breakfasts were really nice.
There was a huge step ladder left out from fri-sun (still there when we left) on the stairs up to our room (outside room 4). I really would of expected more than to find things just continently put somewhere. The jacuzzi bath did not work. The noise from neighbouring businesses woke me and my husband at 4.30am Saturday morning as the windows are only single glazed due to the building being listed.
Convenient setting and accommodation.
Nothing during our visit.
Everything! Beautiful hotel, room & lovely welcoming, helpful staff. Breakfast was delicious too. Would love to have stayed longer & would highly recommend to others & can't wait to return. Perfect city centre location.
