This 4-star hotel is in quiet gardens, next to York Rail Station and looking out over York Minster. It has stylish rooms and a sauna, steam room and heated indoor pool.

In the heart of York, just beyond the entrance of Bootham Bar, the Lamb & Lion Inn offers hearty food, real ales, and luxurious bedrooms, some with a spa bath.
Score from 488 reviews Very good
The staff were very helpful even before booking. The superior room was a real treat. The food and surroundings were excellent. We would love to return.
Loved the style of modern decor mixed with period features. We had a large room on the top floor with a very comfortable 6 foot wide bed. Delicious freshly cooked breakfast in the delightful conservatory style restaurant. Excellent location within the city walls so you could walk to everything. We ate at Star in the City which was just round the corner, also excellent. Would definitely recommend this charming hotel.
The only negative was that the room was very warm and even with both windows wide open it was difficult to sleep.
It was a really lovely hotel .thoroughly enjoyed it.
Stairs stairs stairs and more stairs
We were greeted on our arrival and shown up to our room by staff. The room was fabulous with a huge bed and jacuzzi bath. Breakfast was excellent and freshly cooked to order and we ate in their evening restaurant too which was also excellent. We will certainly use this hotel again as it is situated perfectly and we would recommend it to others.
The hotel was really hot everywhere even in our room. It was a mild October and I think the heating had been switched on in the hotel but this really was the only bad point!
Staff very accommodating.
Small room facing another window. Hallway carpets very dirty. No access to rooftop terrace. Pictures on website are deceptive.
Well appointed, very comfortable room and excellent location. Pleasant staff.
Our room was at the top of the house so it was a bit of a climb up the stairs. I would suggest requesting a first floor room if stairs are a difficulty
All aspects of accommodation were excellent apart from room location.
Poor location of room.it was next to a staff room and rather noisy early morning and late night (12mn)
The recent refurbishment has been very well done and retained many of the features that give the hotel its character. The staff were very friendly, helpful and professional. Lydia in particular was a star. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble and we felt very welcome.
Not enough hot water at times and a distinct lack of working light bulbs. Both easily remedied.
Food really good Cleanliness high standard
Lack of privacy in the "garden rooms" we had to have the blinds down and even then could hear the drinkers in the courtyard just outside our window
The location of the hotel was fantastic and parking in a near by carpark was only £19 fri-sun. The rooms were tastefully decorated (we stayed in room 8). The breakfasts were really nice.
There was a huge step ladder left out from fri-sun (still there when we left) on the stairs up to our room (outside room 4). I really would of expected more than to find things just continently put somewhere. The jacuzzi bath did not work. The noise from neighbouring businesses woke me and my husband at 4.30am Saturday morning as the windows are only single glazed due to the building being listed.
Convenient setting and accommodation.
Nothing during our visit.
Everything! Beautiful hotel, room & lovely welcoming, helpful staff. Breakfast was delicious too. Would love to have stayed longer & would highly recommend to others & can't wait to return. Perfect city centre location.
As soon as you walk up to this hotel it is impressive, the decor is fantastic mixing period with modern. All of the staff were excellent, very fiendly and helpful, we stayed in a character room which one of the best i have ever stayed in, the hotels location is perfect, close to everything. We will be going back without a doubt, highly recommended. Thanks to all
We cannot fault this place
The comfort, stylishness and wonderful breakfasts!
Can't think of anything to dislike!
All of it!
Struggled a bit with the 70 stairs to bedroom. Would stay again but on a lower floor.
Fabulous location, easily placed for all attractions. The staff are young & extremely efficient & friendly.
No lounge area within the hotel. Smell of food in the bathroom from the kitchen below.
Very quaint. Great location. Very clean, and very well done. Staff very accommodating. We came down early, for breakfast our last day as we were catching the train and the staff went to work to get a breakfast early so we could eat before leaving.
I gave it a good for facilities because we were on the top floor without a lift. But the beautiful winding stair case adds to the charm so I would keep it the way it is. So I would give it a very good if available.
Very convenient for the station and the cathedral etc. Staff very friendly. Excellent breakfast.
Perhaps too much of a modern feel (eg choice of music)given historic nature of building
Staff very helpful and pleasant. Rooms were all different and very nice. Accessible room was spacious with wet room, other rooms had baths, one a jacuzzi. Decor throughout was very chic. Good choice of breakfast dishes. Location could t be better as situated in the middle of town.
The only downside is there is no parking unless you are disabled and there is one space. There are no lifts in the hotel and a lot of stairs to the reception, with more to the dining room and bedrooms so not ideal for anyone with mobility problems. Also due to location there was noise from revellers passing by until late at night.
Room was lovely with a large bathroom which included a bath and a separate lovely big shower. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was very nice. Good location. Lovely outdoor seating area.
Room 18 was next to the staff room and a bit noisy late at night and early morning! Also next to the bin store so noisy when bottles were being emptied! Slightly spoilt our relaxing weekend with the 6.15a.m wake up!
The room, it's layout and decoration The WiFi The design of the en suite, very clever the way the glass doors folded back for privacy, but took me a while to work this out (no information leaflet) The outside table and chairs although dark and gloomy (Rosemary room) Room service Location perfect for town attractions Very beautiful facade and obviously a lot of work has been carried out to a high standard Comfy
Couldn't get a table at breakfast-very busy and not a lot left by 9am The noise from the kitchens late at night and early morning The view (
Central location, decor, friendly staff, multiple bars and food options in the hotel too.
As others have said, noise from bins, bottles, deliveries etc is apparent but only if you choose to be in bed early. Didn't bother us because we were out quite late and drank lots!
Lovely property conveniently located with helpful staff, good breakfast and beautiful outdoor areas.
Location, attentive staff, clean facilities, very acceptable food. Restauration of the property was excellent.
Our garden view room lacked privacy. The various blinds were insufficient to ensure privacy. Poor ventilation in room and disturbance from kitchen ventilation system after 10 p.m. Constant piped music everywhere
Great location, lovely staff and superb room and facilities. Will definitely return.
