The hotel has character which is so welcome in this era of same big prints and black leather type of fittings and furniture. It is a point of interest of itself and we enjoyed looking about the hotel. The staff were friendly and helpful in a quiet unobtrusive manner. The breakfast was good.
On business arrived late for last single room, was met and greeted very well indeed. Another lady arrived desperate for a room and the staff went out of there way to dress an unused room for her, even working past the 11.00 pm shift.Excellent.
Good location for local facilities
Noisy outside early in morning/late at night due to local burger place and taxi rank
Clean, good breakfast, friendly staff
Décor a little tired
Excellent location & nice breakfast
Definitely in need of some major refurbishments and a general clean up
Dog friendly, close to ferry terminal
No shower, no tea and coffee facilities
Location was excellent with friendly helpful staff throughout our stay. Our room was a double room on the third floor with a view to the front of the hotel, the bed was a bit small but adequate, comfortable enough with clean, fresh bedding. Tea and coffee making facility was provided and tv in the room. A full cooked breakfast was served in the light and airy restaurant along with a range of fruit juices, cereals, coffee and tea, the staff again being friendly and polite.
As this was only a short stay there was nothing to dislike at this hotel, yes the decor is old and tired and in places the paint/paper is coming away but the location and the price easily make up for this. This hotel does give you a glimpse of its past grandeur and even though it needs a little bit of loving give it a go, you might surprise yourself.
Grubby and shabby
The hotel is perfectly situated, near the train station and local attractions.
It's in need of a bit of restoration. It has character but would be fantastic with some new carpets and a lick of paint!
Location for dockyard & Gunwharf Quays couldn't be bettered. Good breakfast. Historical links.
Noisy; opposite bus station, groups talking loudly throughout night. Tatty decoration - the fine building deserves better maintenance Pitiful shower
The staff were friendly. Room was comfortable and clean.
great location 100m from gunwhalf quay and dockyard nice breakfast friendly staff.
if your expecting a 4 star hotel you will be disappointed could do with a revamp and the room we had looked out onto fire escape.value for money yes with the location but if you are fussy you would be better spending that little bit more.
The staff were excellent Very good breakfast Very good for exploring Portsmouth
The décor is very poor. Only a rubber shower on the bath taps. Needs a complete refurb
Hotel standard very dated, with no air, engrained smell of damp and tobacco, whilst decoration in rooms and public areas in poor condition.
Fabulous breakfast.Water hot for a bath.
Decor....beyond faded...needs a complete (very expensive) update and overhaul.Haven't seen rubber shower attachment for 40 years!!...and what a lift!! Great position in an historic area....could be fantastic.
Pleasant staff and a good breakfast were this hotel's saving graces. It is also convenient for Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and Isle of Wight ferries.
A toilet cistern falling off the wall . A cracked washbasin and grubby paintwork. Nowhere to hang your towels. Really not up to what you expect in a hotel.
Good location for the historic dockyard and shopping area. Secure off road parking.
Very dated decor, poory maintained and noisy location.
The location, our room and the very helpfull staff.
The shower in our room was useless and the bath was too deep for my husband to get out. The tv reception was not good.
Location - Close to seafront. Has a free car park. Cheap
Room had a bath but no shower. Decor both inside and out needs updating. Lift needs modernising.
Location is excellent as base for exploring all the Portsmouth attractions and very close to Gunwharf Quays
Decor is a bit tired in places
We had a great view of the Spinnaker Tower and HMS Warrior. Large airy room. Friendly, helpful staff. Free parking. Would definitely stay again
Decor of room a bit dated but it really didn't matter as it was clean and had everything we needed for the night.
This was our 2nd visit, hotel is adequate although staff very helpful, a good breakfast but ultimately it's all about the location. Spot on.
Can't say that I particularly disliked anything, it has its limitations but this is reflected in the price.
The staff were very friendly, the room was clean and the bed comfortable. The breakfast was good and plenty of choice. The querkiness of the lift - very 1930s. The position of our room - 21 - at the front of the hotel was very good for people watching. Great location for the ferry, train, buses and of course the Historic Dockyard and Gun Wharf Quay with all the shops and restaurants. It would be a wonderful hotel if it was better looked after as the dining room has a lot of character and the lounge area with the bar looked very nice.
The actual state of the hotel. Needs a lot of revamping, in that it desperately needs a repaint - inside and out, the curtains in our room need repairing, the wallpaper needs replacing in parts, some of the carpets are thread-bare and in the dining-room the ceiling where there was obviously a water leak, needs repairing.
Really helpful staff
choice in the bar was limited
The receptionist was friendly, helpful and very welcoming. Our room was warm, spacious and very clean. the bathroom though small was perfectly adequate. There was ;good provision of tea/coffee in room. The breakfast was delicious and served in a very decorative room by polite staff.
Nothing we could actually name.
