There is nothing to be liked in this hotel, apart from the location Thought it was a fire hazzard, with dirty bathrooms and worn out bedroom. It should be condemned

Very friendly staff. Also they have a car park which is free so that saves you a tenner. Literally 1 minutes walk to gun wharf where the main bars, shops and restaurants are. Excellent breakfast even had strawberries before my full English. Bed mattress was a bit too soft

Excellent location, big rooms, old fashioned atmosphere, good breakfast, friendly staff. Rooms facing the harbour had a nice view but were very noisy and hot. Bathrooms were quite worn and out of date and at least the room we stayed had no shower - only a bathtub.

The large bedroom with the high ceiling decor and very comfortable bed. Beautiful furniture, drapes, wallpaper and couch made you feel as if youu were in a period home. Having to leave.

Good location for visiting the naval museum at Portsmouth. A very old stately hotel, built in 1774. Hotel could do with a make over as carpets ands curtains were very worn, but the bed linen was clean and fresh. Water was hot

Decent price. Great location close to historic docks, train station and gunwharf quays shopping centre. Internet worked in the room despite not being guaranteed in room facilities. Apparently breakfast is good but didn't get a chance to find out. Ancient decor. Room smelt a bit like smoke and excessive airfreshner. Window looked out onto fire exit. No evening menu.

It's a jewel of faded glory, maybe in need of a little refurbishment, but against that, Huge rooms with huge windows, a real bath you can lie full length in, Crisp, spotless linens, a quaint, clunky old lift, The lounge bar offers comfort and class, like a turn of the century gentleman's club, leather arm chairs and old engravings of naval battles and life at sea. The dining room is class - crystal chandeliers, lofty moulded ceiling, white damask table cloths, impeccably laid, an atmosphere of quiet elegance and more delightful engravings. Breakfast featured a cereal and fruit bar and a faultless, freshly cooked, traditional breakfast. The staff are charming, real people, not automatons freshly out of catering college. Location - superb, a few steps from the old Portsmouth Dockyard and the new Gunwharf. A truly delightful stay, can't wait to come back, hopefully before some modern hotel chain takes it over

Location was excellent Hotel was dirty drinks at the bar were out of date and beer from pump was disgusting. Place was filthy and not one of the staff took time out to even introduce themselves or even bother to show us to our rooms. We stayed 2 nights and wouldn't stay again. Not worth £79 for a double

The gentalman on reception was very nice and helpful We stayed for a couple of hours did not even unpack as we decided it was not for us. Not shower or even attachment, no hairdryer, sheets on bed did not fit, furniture so old a second had shop would not accept it. Bed was not fit to sleep in. So dissapointed we went back home so our long weekend was ruined.

Good Breakfast from 7am. We had a one night stop prior to an early morning ferry and proximity was very good with nearby parking and visiting museums. Does need a makeover in Breakfast Room however it's character shines through as a result of fading grandeur. Our bedroom had a similar problem but offset by the outstanding views.

Friendly staff, impressive dinning room, large annd comfortable room, excellent location. The decor is looking very tired and urgently needs an update. Some of the improvements wouldn't be expensive, for example the figure of the admiral on the ledge outside our room looked like a scarecrow. It would look better if it was removed. Similarly the faded color photo by the front entrance needs to be replaced.

Comfy beds with duvets. Pleasant and attractive dining room. Easy access to Navy Dockyard. Nice dining room, but the rest of the hotel somewhat "over the hill".

The location is very good, it's within 200m of the historical dockyard entrance and like wise for a modern shopping complex and restaurants for the evening. There is also a train and bus station outside the front door of the hotel if you need to go further afield. Staff are also very friendly and helpful. If staying here don't take any of the front rooms, the noise from the bus and rail terminals is terrible and if a light sleeper will not appreciate the constant noise even if the views from these rooms is fantastic.

The location very close to the quayside shopping and entertainment and the historic dockyard, the very large size of the room and large window with harbour view, friendly welcome, the hotel having a car park If the stay was for more than a weekend being next to the bus and train station may have become intrusive but it didn't bother us for a short stay.

Excellent location and great view of HMS Warrior. Big room with lots of light and fresh air. Very nice Georgian breakfast room. Staff was polite and nice. All in all a bit scruffy, but in good shape for her age. Beds were comfortable. For the front rooms the buses and trains are not an issue. However, drunken louts at 2 am and delivery man drinking tea and talking at the Pompey Stand-up from 4 am on, made it hard to sleep.

Location of the hotel couldn't be better car parking facilities was a bonus. Our bedroom was the victory room -it was massive with a great view The hotel was obviously once very grand but it could now do with refurbishment. The carpet in our room was rather mucky and needs replaced.
