We were really impressed with everything about the hotel. The staff was very polite and well trained. No hassle at all checking in or out (we checked out very early). The dinner we had was one of the best if not the best we've ever had in a hotel. The car park was very secure. This was our first stay but will definitely not be our last stay at this hotel or any other Macdonald hotel.

The setting so near to Wigan was lovely. Very good breakfast with plenty of choice. We stayed for a family wedding for 2 nights and my Husband and son really enjoyed the pool after 6 hours in the car. Found the staff very helpful and pleasent. Found there was a problem getting my Mother around as it was not disabled friendy.

The hotel is situated in the countryside and is quiet at night. The catering is first class. Though I used few of them, the overall facilities were generous and well appointed. The staff were pleasant and helpful. I would recommend the hotel for business/ conferencing purposes or for a weekend break. It is within easy reach for Wigan and Bolton and the m6. It has character and the modern additions have not spoiledd the country house atmosphere. The hotel computer is old and inefficient and led to delays on arrival and departure. I was there over Christmas and so there were staff shortages, but this did not detract from overall service standards and was acceptable in the circumstances.Local transport facilities are not great and I would hesitate to reccommend the hotel to anyone without their own transport.

We had considered the Premier Inn though decided to pay the extra to stay at a Macdonalds as it was near where we needed to visit and we know they are particularly good standard. Glad we did, the facilities and food were worth paying the extra for. Though we only picked the set menu for the one evening dinner as the other menu we felt overly expensive, the set menu and breakfast were particularly good. Also things like sandwiches , drinks and there were alot of charges for extras. Heating went off so cold this was a shame as everything else really good.

We went on a Christmas night out and althou the staff were friendly they were severely understaffed. The Menu on paper looked lovely but was served in a buffet style but very dis-organised. The starters were brought out at the same time as the main course which was being kept warm by hoverring over boiling water. By the time we came to eat the main course it was cold. Strange choice of potatoes to go with roast turkey and veg (new boiled) no roast or mash. The food would have been nice if it was hot. Staff very good but not enough of them to cope with the amount of people on the night only 2 on at any one time.

Nothing. Thought standards were poor, and rooms were cold, and had to ask reception to put the heat on when it was cold.

The Hotel setting, public areas and restaurant Disappointed with the evening meal. It is expensive with quite small portions - and I am not a big eater. I found the room suffered from beoing adjacent to some water tank which kept filling (noisily) during the night. Again on the room, noise travels easily at this hotel. I was awoken by the chap next door twice who had lengthy phone calls twice between 2330 and 0100.

Good location. There was no record of my booking.com resevation. I was given a twin instead of a double eventually and the room was freezing. The breakfast was expensive at £15 plus and the service very poor[ no dishes available, had to remind the waitress to take my main order, twice]

Location was nice, grounds looked well kept. We were there for a friends wedding and arrived at 10pm and left at 10.30am the next morning so didnt really have time to look around. Room was very drab, bathroom wasn't the cleanest, there was mould around the bath. The cost of breakfast was a joke £15 plus for buffet style was far too much

Nice grounds and location next to reservoir Easy to find central to lower lancashire If the restaurant are going to charge £22.00 for the basics with extras it was not worth the high cost. Food did not meet our expectations

It was handy as we were staying for a wedding being held at the hotel One member of staff was helpful upon check in, with the remainder being less than approachable. Also, while at the wedding in the evening the bar staff changed 'policy' half way through the night when charging drinks to our room. We only bough 6 drink over a period of 6 hours. The food was poor (including the breakfast), room service food was cold when arrived, (after taking 5 seperate telephone calls to place order in first instance). The room was very dated (the bathroom in particular - mouldy crack tiles, yellow fittings and a general musty smell) and was unable to have a hot shower in the morning. While having our cold shower the shower could not be altered to keep the water in the bath, as a result the tiled bathromm became some what of a death trap. I have to be honest - I have stayed in many Macdonald Hotels through business and with my husband on holidays and this is by far the poorest example of their brand. Has put me off using them again in the future.

Staff extremely helpfull, though breakfast staff could be a little cheerier, bed very comfortable enjoyed my stay and will stay again The condition of the room should always be checked before guests arrive to prevent complaints, in the room I was in there was no lightbulb in the desk lamp and the towel rail was not secured to the wall. the bathrooms could really do with a planned refurbishment to maintain it in keeping witht the rest of the hotel standards still had a good stay

Easy to find and staff helpful I think the standard of food needs to be raised. We had a light bite supper on the Friday night and this was not great. The breakfast the following morning left a lot to be desired - there was not much flavour in the bacon, the beans were cold and the eggs didn't look too fresh.

The food was excellent Reception away from the main building was disappointing and Receptionist assured us that rooms 404 and 203 were exactly the same!! Room near to Spa smelled faintly of chlorine just behind the door. Bed in Byron Suite was too firm.

We stayed as a couple at this hotel to attend a friends wedding, the hotel experience was good, but the wedding venue lacked in some areas. As we arrived at the room the reception was taking place, around 7.00pm, with lots of other guest all wanting a drink from the bar there was a long wait as the bar was only staffed by one barman! Also Macdonalds are going to be more imaginative with there offering at the bar(s) no real ale, even in bottles, no cocktails, just standard selection at high prices. Must say the hot & cold buffet served that evening was very accceptable.
