Home-cooked food is served in The Garden House Inn’s wooden-beamed, contemporary restaurant and a roaring open-fire features in the bar.
Score from 157 reviews Very good
In the heart of Durham's city centre, within easy reach of the A1 and less than 500 metres from the castle and the train station, this modern hotel offers great value and spacious, modern rooms.
Score from 556 reviews Very good
Super comfortable bed and lovely helpful staff. Totally amazing breakfast! I was very impressed, good quality produce and cooked well. Staff were so helpful. They were much appreciated.
Building site next door was a shock when we first arrived to be honest. A large site, with houses being built. I heard no noise at all during our stay, so thankfully it was not a problem.
This is an attractive hotel, well maintained, in a scenic setting about 5-10 minutes walk from the center of Durham. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We would stay here again.
Very handy for city 10 minute walk. Railway station close but not a noise problem. Restaurant was very good but not cheap. Bar was quiet and comfortable
New housing being built close by and a bit of noise on weekdays. No problem at weekend. WiFi in room not great.
Noisy in rooms Tired decor in main hotel
Do try the cheese and mustard souffle on the Residents' bar menu. I kept trying to resist and in the end had it three (or was it four?) times in a seven-day stay. Mind you, though it was small, it was rich - I didn't need anything else. Very comfortable, though the actual bedroom was a little cramped, once I had all my work in it. I'll be back.
The staff and facilities were excellent. The hotel was extremely comfortable and within easy reach of the station and city
The building site next to the hotel, although this really was not a problem, it was slightly noisy but obviously will be a temporary inconvenience.
We had a lovely stay at this hotel, we only stayed for one night. Rooms werent overly big but ideal for me and my fiance and the breakfast in the restaurant was lovely the nxt morning. Thankyou very much for a lovely stay would defo consider staying again.
What we enjoyed most was the proximity to amazing historic sites, walking the cobbled streets in easy distance from the hotel.
Good location in Durham. Excellent parking. Nice sized bedroom. Bathroom was good with a small but effective shower.
The bedroom and bathroom are quite dated and would really benefit from some new furniture. The existing stuff is quite depressing.
Trouser press Car park
No tea bags in room Room a bit cramped Dinner ages in arriving No fruit at breakfast (don't mean pallets, bananas etc) Bathroom v dated
The hotel is very close to the station and has an excellent location relative to the main sites. The staff were friendly and very welcoming. The room was warm, comfortable and well serviced, whilst the bed was comfortable. The restaurant is highly recommended for lunch and dinner, although I did only have breakfast and that was very good.
Everything! Friendly and efficient staff, on site parking ,cleanliness, value for money, in room hotel information very good and ideally located for Durham city centre. We will definitely be visiting again
Friendly, helpful staff. The excellent restaurant with tasty food well prepared and presented and served by a delightfully smiling young waitress. Bed was very comfortable, and it's only a short walk into the city (although see comment in the 'What didn't you like' section. Durham is a fabulous city and if visiting again I would happily stay here.
The room was rather on the small side for two leaving not enough room for luggage storage, but this was a minor criticism. The location is close to the city centre but still entails a bit of a climb which would be a hindrance to anyone with walking difficulties, especially since having got there you find there is no lift to the rooms.
Position, room was nice, quiet location but 10 minute walk into centre
Warm greeting from friendly helpful staff, good room with en suite. TV in the room although not used and free wifi was appreciated. Also the Discount offered for cash payment was good.
Noise from a machine ? generator outside my window which went on all night stopped me sleeping. Good coffee & breakfast but the apparently local sausage was tasteless, bland and average, and the soft poached egg was over cooked.
Location and breakfast.
Very warm room despite no heating on. Had to open window which brought in train noise.
Good position with helpful staff
A little dated and very hot!
Location is excellent if arriving by road or rail (we did both). Staff are helpful and friendly. Very easy access by foot to Durham City and all the sites and facilities of this lovely city.
The bed in our suite was a little too soft for our liking and the noise from the restaurant below (separately managed) early in the morning on the Sunday was annoying. Otherwise highly recommended.
Staff really friendly. 3 of us stayed in room 11, more than enough room, comfy beds, tea, coffee and biscuits. Bathroom and shower good. Breakfast great. No complaints with hotel at all. Good location for pubs and shops.
Building site view
Food in restaurant was delicious Staff were pleasant
My room was very cold, there appeared to be a draft from windows. I stayed in a twin room and had to use the second duvet from second bed as well as the one on the bed I slept. I still woke up with quite a chesty cough, sore throat and headache which did not ease in any way. I informed both the ladies cleaning and the reception. I was not offered so much as a breakfast or tea in compensation.
Clean rooms cheery facility. Lovely staff and food at breakfast and bar
My twin beds in room 10. The mattress had seen better days.
It was in a good location for all amenities, on site restaurant and bar clean comfortable room and parking was a plus
