In the heart of Durham, within easy reach of highway A1 and less than 550 yards from the castle and the train station, this modern hotel offers spacious, modern rooms.

Home-cooked food is served in The Garden House Inn’s wooden-beamed, contemporary restaurant and a roaring open-fire features in the bar.

Fabulous dining area,excellent location
Nothing to dislike
Hotel with a car park and in a quiet part of town
A very nice, clean, older building halfway between the train station and the Castle. The restaurant downstairs was clearly popular as it was completely booked on a Sunday night.
The room was a little smaller than we'd expected. And the walk to the train station in the morning straight uphill! Just a note: we couldn't get a taxi to take us to the train station Monday morning. Not the hotel's fault but good to know for the future.
staff peace and quiet welcome cleanliness décor powerful hot shower
bed a little too soft and bouncy! breakfast very tasty but would have liked some artisan bread, not just sliced white or brown.
A quiet location convenient for railway station and city centre. Pleasant and helpful staff. Excellent food in Finbarr's Restaurant.
The bed was a bit hard. The bar and restaurant were extremely busy on Friday and Saturday evening but pleasant and comfortable at other times.
The toaster machine time / temp control works backwards - normal controls rotate L - R to increase what ever it does. Your toaster control works in the opposite direction which coerces customers to put the bread through twice and get burnt causing smoke and setting off your fire alarm. Someone put croissants though the machine causing smoke thus making the staff open the doors to dispel the smoke and freezing my English breakfast in the process.
Helpful and friendly staff
good breakfast very clean plenty of free parking good bar and restaurant will go back
A great location for exploring the town. Good parking availability. Clean & comfortable which is all one really needs. I travelled to pick up my son from Uni. Very convenient. Lots of eating options near by so don't feel you need to use the restaurant on site.
Breakfast arrangements were a bit unclear (but I only had to ask).
After a tiring journey north for a family funeral we were pleased that the hotel was within easy reach of the railway station and an easy walk to the centre of Durham. The young man on reception was helpful and friendly and checking in was easy. The rooms were clean and smelled fresh and contained everything we needed. All the staff we encountered were polite and friendly. The rooms were also nicely quiet with no disturbing noises from outside. The beds were very comfortable, such that we even slept well on our first night. We enjoyed breakfasts and there was plenty of choice of food both in the Continental and Full English breakfasts. The dining room was also well appointed and clean. Checking out was quick and easy. I am glad we chose to stay here and would do so again.
Thoroughly enjoyable stay. Very convenient for centre attractions without having to use the car. Restaurant is of a very high standard.
Convenient for city centre, and the hotel was good lovely breakfast which kept us going till later in the evening.
from a member of staff letting us have her parking spot till when we checked out the staff could not do enough for us.we will go back again. the breakfasts were lovely and hot&enough. we managed to have a meal in evening in the restaurant &the food was devine.
Their association with / proximity to a reasonable restaurant. It was warm, dry and not far from the station or city.
Could feel the springs through the mattress. Very dated / tired decor and facilities throughout. They're resting on the laurels of the independent restaurant that just happens to be in the same building. No enthusiasm - they're just going through the motions. The world of hospitality has moved on and left the Kings Lodge behind.
everything from check in to check out
--the hotel is near the Flass Vale Nature Reserve -- perfect for a quick walk --I've stayed there several times and look forward to future visits
--the only thing I didn't like this time was the shower which was cramped -- but other rooms have had lovely showers so people should not be put off!
Location is great - next to a local nature reserve but in easy walking distance of the town centre. Staff were very friendly and helpful
Car park is very busy and cramped. I wish I had travelled by train - and will next time.
We stop there through the week REALLY ENJOYED IT. Warm rooms .clean. comfortable and friendly staff would definitely recommend it. THANX
Rooms are comfortable and spotless. The breakfast is perfect served in the lovely restaurant. The location is within walking distance of Durham town centre but has the feel of being more rural.
The bar closed at 11pm and the residents lounge closed at 7 pm so our group of friends had to retreat to our rooms although we would have liked to stay up later to socialise.
An overall pleasant stay from the warm welcome, good nights sleep - in a clean and tidy room, tasty breakfast and speedy checkout. I would be happy to stop again and will probably do so.
The tooing and froing at breakfast to get coffee, a cup at a time. A coffee pot for the table would reduce some of the traffic carrying all manner of hot things.
Position of hotel and the fact that a very good restaurant available on the premises.
Access to Hotel poor. "No access to Hotel" from the carpark could do with sorting.
Breakfast, food, service, room.
Bedroom too hot. Had to turn off heating and open window. No direct reply to initial email to hotel about availability of rooms.
Near station, good breakfast, simple but it was all I needed!
Staff are friendly, nice breakfast.
Comfortable room and very clean. Friendly staff and good location
