This hotel was the dirtiest hotel I have ever stayed in.In one of the doorways was a piece of bacon on the floor I noticed when I arrived. It was still there when we checked out!!! We reluctantly stayed here after being shown three smelly and dirty rooms first. This is a grand looking hotel and the rooms are nothing like those shown and advertised on the website so much so I am contacting consumer direst with the pictures of what rooms we were allocated. As a sweetener we were offered room service breakfast on one morning. My God, This came with no milk, no condements, very very cold, eggs uncooked, sausages full of fat, bacon stinky, infact we did not eat this but then on checkout even though they offered us it free they tried to charge!!! On the second evening we spoke to many guests in the bar and all of them without exception had complaints about the cleanliness of this hotel. If this was a two star hotel then maybe it would just pass however who has rated this a 5 star hotel as I really need to speak with them. I have stayed many many times in the Premier Lodge around the corner which is fantastic and very clean however as this was a special occasion I wanted a treat and plumped for what looked like a great 5 star luxury hotel. I stay in hotels every week all over the world and I am not exagerating when I say this really was the dirtiest and smelliest hotel I have ever had the displeasure to stay in. However the staff were quite friendly albeit quite ashamed at the state of the rooms, I will not name them but they actually were expecting many complaints about the rooms. Infact in the queue at the reception there were numerous other guests saying the same thing very very high price as it was raceday but surely is it lawfull to advertise something totally incorrectly.I Am not a moaner or serial complainer, I have my own business and I am realistic, I knew it would be busy but there is no excuse for lack of basic hygene and cleanliness.

The service was superb and the staff were extremely helpful, friendly and professional. The hotel was clean and executive rooms roomy and comfortable. We chose to stay as it was our anniversary. They even went to the effort of hand writing a card to congratulate us. The hotel staff provided the type of service you would expect from the most prestigious hotel and they appeared passionate about their work We were disappointed we had to pay £6 per day for car parking as we were residents of the hotel

The room standard was very poor for the money. I paid not much more for the Grosvenor on park lane but the room quality was far superior ! I would not visit the royal York again or recommend it !

Very central - wanted to see National Railway Museum. Meals were delicious and staff very friendly. Miad service was good but they seemed to not be aware of the towel changing only when required. I booked the hotel because it looked old and interesting but we were stuck in the Garden rooms which meant a modern room accessed via the conference area. On two occasions we had to fight through delegates to get to the main hotel. Room was fine but had a strange aroma (probably musty). Did not realise that we could add the parking charges to the bill.

Proximity to the City Centre On checking in we were given a room in the garden wing. This room was very small and felt similar to a travel lodge and also felt very much out of the way from the rest of the hotel. We asked to move and were given a room on the 2nd floor room 207 this was adapted for people with disability but regardless was very comfortable and far better. We were very disappointed with the breakfast and although we paid for it we chose not to eat breakfast in the hotel on our 2nd and last morning. Also on both evenings in the hotel we ended the evening with a couple of drinks in the bar. The bar staff were efficient and pleasent but we were disappointed in the state of the bar top itself it was covered in spillages and marks.

Comfortable room in new annexe. Staff welcoming and helpful. Ideal for city centre. Originally offered lower ground floor room with a view of a nine foot brick wall and several air conditioning units. Hotel did offer alternative after complaint. Would stipulate room above ground in new annexe in any future booking.

The location is perfect and the Hotel itself is beautiful with a good amount of the original features still intact. The staff where friendly and many local, which is a refreshing change from many city center hotels. The room needed a refurb and was tiny. It should never have been sold as a double in a 4 star hotel

I left my phone charger in the room so phoned to ask to have it returned. I was a bit disappointed after just spending £150 for the night that they were going to charge me £10 to return it. I work for a charity and we would of returned this free of charge. After a lovely time it left me with a slightly unhappy feeling

Very nice location. Room was really nice and comfortable. There was no where to warm food up that we got from outside so we had to eat cold food. Pillows were not comfortable.

Its was right in the centre of york. The room was big and comfortable. We booked the The Royal York Restaurant (well in advance) as it looks over the York Minster. However the Hotel served us the meal in one of their conference rooms, as the hotel had booked a big party in the restaurant. We felt that we should have had the courtesy from the hotel at least to tell us that the venue for our meal had changed. There are a great number of good restuarants in York and we would have gone to one of them, had we known.

It was a lovely hotel, the staff were friendly and very helpful. My mother is disabled and they found her a specially adapted room which made all the difference to our stay. It was warm, clean and well managed. We were a little disappointed with the breakfast. There was plenty of food but it had been cooked in advance and kept warm. It would have been nicer to have had freshly cooked food. Even so it was still nice.

The best hotel we stayed in! Great value for money, newly refurb'd room, garden view with view of the Minster, garden chess, very Grand Hotel. Our favourite throughout the uk. A must stay for York!!! And next door to the train station so easy to get anywhere.

Not much to like about the hotel, it is too big with not enough staff on reception to check people in and out. We seemed to spend more time queuing to check out than we did staying in the hotel The inability or lack of interest in the staff to prevent a group of very rowdy and extremely noisy wedding guests who were drinking at the bar until 2.30 in the morning. Despite numerous telephone calls to reception asking that something be done about it, nothing was done. It would appear that the hotel attitude was to make a bit of money selling over priced drinks to cretins than worry about the other guests. Clearly weddings are big business for the Hotel, so beware if you book and there is a wedding on that evening !

The service was poor in the restaurant. The food was mediocre and poor quality. The ambience was dark and dismal and reminded me of an eastern block hotel! We encountered numerous complaints from other guests about the rooms, re decor and overall dated shabbiness, calling into question the hotels star rating. It needs renovating and bringing upto date (getting rid of the old tv's and replacing with flatscreens!) would be a start!! STAFF NEED INTENSIVE TRAINING ON HOW TO 'WAIT ON' IN RESTAURANT AND A LESSON IN HOW TO DRESS SMARTLY! GOOD LUCK!

The Gardens. The Bed. Great Location for Disabled. The facade & architecture. The Hotel interior was somewhat seedy. Needs refurbishment. My Bedroom seemed to be midway through this process. Breakfast poor for **** Hotel. No fresh fruit, no yoghurt, Bain Marie hot breakfast slow in replenishing. Hotel very disabled-unfriendly: lift out of order, steps everywhere, No special arrangements for near bedroom for disabled. Does not deserve **** status

The room was somewhat smaller than we'd expected and a little cramped, though the bathroom was a good size. Sadly the shower just about dribbled out at best, but a good size bath. The room was very warm with no aircon, though this we expected with a hotel of this period. The staff were more than helpful and assisted us in all our requests, including one for a fan and another for a local Chinese take away menu, in all, very friendly and polite staff. The view from our room was nothing to write home about, unless you like train station roofs and as it happens I am a Roofing contractor so it worked for me but other rooms (More expensive) did have a view of the back lawn. I was surprised to hear that car parking was £6.00 a night as this should be free, I don't charge my quests to park their car if they stay with me as such, though we did not pay the parking charge, we were let off that cost, not sure why, but I'm not complaining.

Situation is excellent if you get a garden room. Staff most supportive and friendly. Very attentive restaurant staff especially at breakfast- super. Some attnetion to details would make this good hotel really excellent Room was described as executive twin with garden view, in fact the room size was poky and the small window made 'garden view' somewhat optimistic. Due to the really good support from reception staff changed room to one which truly fitted the description. It is said to accept dogs but the price of £25 per night is exorbitant. Breakfast could do with more healthy eating eg cereals Weetabix and branflakes and semi-skimmed milk. Dinner was not good needs looking at- lamb was tough.
