Was told over the phone we would have a kingsize bed in a superior room. You couldn't swing a cat and it was a double. You would have a better room at a travel lodge. Chipped furniture and out dated bathroom.
Rooms needs some paint, breakfast in room was poor compared to restaurant.
Nail sticking out of bath tub which I caught my toe on. Notified staff no apologies made. Room not the cleanest either.
The location is amazing. So close to the station and perfect distance from the city centre.
We were given the "garden view" room which had no view whatsoever. It was in the basement of the hotel and had a view of the street and post office. People walking by could look directly into the room so we had to keep the curtains closed. This room was the same price as one I had stayed in on a previous trip which had amazing views of the York Minster.
The location is good and the room was as you'd expect.
Room was next to a side entrance. Whislt this was locked at 11pm it beeped all night.
Good location for all city areas. Dining room staff were very friendly and helpful. Room was very spacious with Queen size bed. Towels were very luxurious in size and thickness
All 6 pillows on the bed were old and compacted so they were VERY uncomfortable to sleep on. The chamber maid swapped one for the second night which was a little better. We were in the Garden Rooms so felt very divorced from the rest of the hotel
Staff were friendly
Loved the hotel and its proximity to York and station. Staff friendly and helpful. Great to be able to leave luggage then collect it on way for train.
Had breakfast in room as a treat but tea was stewed with 4 tea bags in little pot. Had to make fresh and there were not many tea bags or provisions in the room. Rest was fine though.
Situation, close to major attractions on foot. National Railway Museum closest, also The Shambles and Minster not too far
Situation, close to railway station! Not a huge problem as we overlooked the lines but didn't hear the trains at night. Not an inspiring view, though.
Location, easy access to city centre and railway station. Hotel warm and comfortable.
Only one night stay - unable to try hotels facilities due to commitments
Close proximity to the rail station. The breakfast Easy walk to the city centre
The prices and service in the bar
The staff (particularly reception) were excellent, friendly and offering suggestions of what to see and do in York
Atmosphere of the hotel,very nice.
Very slippy white tiled bathroom floor,on which my wife fell and hurt her back.
The location is really good. Very close to the train station which even connect with the platform. The breakfast are nice.
The hotel was fabulous and very clean nothing was to much trouble thankyou for a great memorable stay and we will be staying again.Mrs guyler
Staff made the stay for us
The restaurant was slow staff very good waiting for chef!
We were very pleased that staff had put a bottle of champagne in.our room as it was our 10th wedding anniversary.
Standard room was very basic and cold the wind made the Windows rattle.
The breakfast and distance into the centre
Cold bland rooms uncomfortable beds old poor quality pillows
Lovely room, good room service excellent location. Quality hotel.
On the expensive side I don't think overnight guests should have to pay for parking which was also expensive.
Only £2.50 to have breakfast delivered to room. Politeness of staff and very relaxed atmosphere.
No wifi available
The reception area was stunning and the staff very friendly. The breakfast was lovely.
The curtains in our room were covered in stains. There was no information before hand to say that you had to pay to park your car in the hotel car park per night. The restaurant and bar price were a little excessive.
Rooms were very good wouldnt say they were worth the full value but very good hotel
Too much noise qt night as we were near the royal mail sorting office working with trucks and banging all night
Central location Welcoming staff Historic building with old fashioned grandeur
Dark brown modern decor in bedroom very gloomy Breakfast no more than canteen food
Convenience of location , straight out of the station and straight into the hotel, although at no time did the sound of trains cause a problem. Very friendly and attentive staff
Room size was a little cramped and bathroom / toilet tiny. Breakfast service was lovely but had but toast order was taken 3 times before any arrived. As title suggests, like an ageing Hollywood A lister, The Royal has the the superficial looks and the pulling power to put bums on seats but a closer look shows it to be a little careworn and in need of a little touch up. Delivers a good performance but kind of get the feeling it isn't actually trying too hard anymore and is riding its reputation. Nothing majorly bad but slightly stained and a little threadbare.
Excellent bed. Rooms very spacious. Large clean bathroom.
Breakfast was only average at best. Tinned fruit, tasteless fruit juice. English breakfast was poor. Get the chef to visit a Premier Inn.
