The evironment and setting along with the staff and their uniforms were great and made the stay one to be remembered The main course of Mixed Grill was very very very disappointing espically at £20 per head and was not help with the manager said it was their best sell? To be honest we found it dreadfull with my colleges and 1 spending a total £60 just for the main dish. |

everything other than check in was great we had reserved a table for 8pm with our booking, on arrival the hotel was full and we were told we could not eat until 9.30pm. the receptionist saw we had reserved with our booking, made no apology and although she promised to find out if we could eat earlier did not communicate again with us. I phoned the restaurant from my room and was asked to arrive on time and they would fit us in. On departure from the hotel and same receptionist checked us out but did not ask if we had got sorted or indeed if our stay had been enjoyable - she did not even say thank you when we paid! For such an impressive hotel - they scored an own goal with her attitude. |

Despite staying in the main castle when two weddings were taking place we were, despite our fears, not disturbed by the large parties. The staff were very friendly throughout our stay. A relatively expensive place to stay but worth it for a special occassion. The thick castle walls means that the promised wireless internet is 'patchy' in its coverage. |

my son and i visited for his birthday...and had dinner there....we loved the excitment of staying in a castle as we now live in california, my son being an american he was thrilled to be staying there as not many of his friends have ever been in a castle let alone spend a night there...the only disappointed i would say was when i booked it i noted it was my son's 10th birthday...nothing special was sent to our table....in the states this would of been mentally and physcially noted and they would of done something for him....maybe you want to tell your staff to look at the booking info after it has been booked. I believe when i booked the price did not include breakfast, however whilst at the castle i noted the price included breakfast??? |

the location was great. very nice surroundings. staff were lovely. things such as trouser press and hair dryer were not in room although stated as were. room was too creepy for a stay on my own, too many mirrors, no ceiling lighting (went out looking rather orange - girls will understand). i also understand this is a castle and the jolly look of medievel had to be part of it but the luxury of being in a top hotel was taken away by the lack of options available. the residents bar was shockingly full of odd people with a lady serving drinks through a hatch but no idea of what drinks were available. just felt uneasy, without any escape if neccessary. just weird, i would recommend this hotel, if i were foreign. good, just weird, not the castle or anything about it, just the feeling i got. |

Very impressed with the hotel staff. The lady on the reception desk was very helpful in providing us with information about "The Prince Bishops" and provided us with aprint out of information. Very good! |

Very attractive setting - good looking building good location - close to Durham Room and especially the bathroom was well equipped. It is a nice place to go if you have all the time in the world to enjoy it. My room was unbearably hot - not even possible to cool it with the electric fan provided and the windows open (it was very warm weather) Although the room was attractive it was very cluttered and not relaxing. The staff at breakfast seemed harassed. I found it difficult to find my way around and to carry my case up the steep stairs to my room. |

We enjoyed looking at the original state rooms in the castle but as this is not usually offered to guests we had to ask Reception if we could look around. The member of staff who showed us around was most helpful. Yes---the piped misic was repetitive and far too loud and the public rooms are so dark that it is difficult to read. The first impression of our room 85 was good but the upon retireing discovered that the sheets were too small for the bed as they did not tuck under the mattress at either side and were too short. The pillows were hard and and there was no under pillow case on any of the pillows. (Very unheigenic) I requested some feather ones and was told by a very helpful receptionsits (Claire) that others had made this requsted. 20 minutes later 2 were delivered to our room, again with only iuone pillow slip. The room was not cleaned properly after our first night as there were bread crumbs left on the table and a chair from breakfast. (The breakfast was excellent). Three dirty cleaning cleaning cloths had been left in the bathroom and there was no hand soap. The bath plug was broken. Two of the pictures which had been stuck on the walls were falling off and are in danger of falling on someone's head. |

Excellent and friendly staff, tremendous ambience, very relaxing, lovely grounds. We stayed for my son's graduation at Durham University, and in part booked Lumley Castle as a pat on the back for him doing well. There was a hiccough at breakfast; our order for hot food was not taken, then the hot food took a long time to arrive, and when it did, all items except the egg were only luke-warm. |
