Helpful staff, comforable room, good food, good location. Confusion about breakfast prices and evening meal prices. I think that the breakfast price should be included in the room price as every other hotel does. There was also confusion over evening meal price, when we arrived we were offered an evening meal price of £20 for a three course meal so I booked 4 evening meals for £80, whe we tried to confirm this with the resteraunt manager that evening we were told that this deal was only from a limited menu and if we ordered anything from the full menue we would have to pay extra. I feel that I was misled and was very dissapointed and feel that this detracted from an otherwise pleasent stay at your hotel. Please sort this out for future guests.

Breakfast Good 1. Room not made up next day 2. Very noisy due to extractor fans outside window 3. Wanted to charge full breakfast rate as we had not pre-booked BUT this was not the case as it was stated on page 2 of the booking form 4. Noise from (presumably wedding) guests in the early hours of the morning. Items 1 and 3 were reported at reception on our departure. Loose apologies only with no offer of any recompence.

An attractive building and location, good size room with sofa, friendly staff. As Makeney Hall is a four-star hotel I was surprised about the following: only one bath towel and one hand towel for two people; no shampoo or bath/shower gel; the double bed was small and dipped in the middle. Also I was surprised that when we had finished dinner and had added a gratuity to the bill, a waitress came running after us to say she would see none of the tip unless it was paid in cash. I did revise the bill and paid her a cash tip but this was embarrassing and could have been avoided.

Setting was excellent, location was good for roaming around the area. The inside areas of the hall were charming, The grounds were amazing, food was good, staff freindly if not experienced for a hotel of this type. A double executive room was tired and not really 4 star, so hot inside and no fan or a/c.Bed was small and not very comfortable, the matress needed replacing. Bar was not manned and very dis organised. Not really worth a 4 star tag in my opinion, the waiters were young and not very efficient in too many ways, the food took ages on a sunday night, Overall it was ok , but could have been so much better bearing in mind the building.

It was a beautifully presented hotel, with some lovely period features. The cleanliness of the bathroom was not the best. The fixtures and fittings were looking tired. The room had plastic drinking glasses and there was only one biscuit with the tea and coffee in the room. The dressing table drawer front was also hanging off. Although we had booked an executive room, we weren't actually given one.

The building was gorgeous and the room was nicely laid out and was very comfortable. The staff were friendly and helpful. The views of the grounds and surrounding fields from our room were lovely and walking in the grounds was very nice too. Most importantly the full English breakfast was fantastic! The only problem we had was not being told what time breakfast was served. Though there was a board with these times on, we missed it. However we were not charged for our missed breakfast even though we quickly had some cereal and fruit.

We booked this hotel a few weeks in advance as we were attending a wedding reception there in the evening. Our room was extremely spacious, but what looked at first like a king-sized bed was in fact 2 singles pushed together and the bathroom fittings were quite dated. The hotel buildings are very nice and it is a beautiful location, but compared to previous experiences, we did not feel that the quality of the room and service received justified the high price paid (£100), especially as breakfast was not included. Before dinner, the majority of hotel staff were (pre)occupied with looking after the wedding breakfast - we were told that someone would take our order from the other room next to the bar (which was in use by the wedding), but noone came. Dinner was reasonable and well-presented, but expensive for the quality (£35 each for one glass of wine and 2 courses) and we missed the first part of the reception as we were unable to get dinner before the reception started (7.30).

The staff on reception could not have been more helpful and pleasant and were a delight to talk to. The bathroom was very shabby, the lighting in the room was poor and in general the room was tired and in need of a great deal of renovation work. and if this is an example of 'Executive' rooms I feel very sorry for people who book standard rooms.

The rooms were a good size and the beds were comfortable. I couldn't find a member of staff when I wanted to check out. I even phoned the hotel from the reception area but no one answered the phone. The lighting in the bedroom was poor.

For a start, I reserved a more deluxe room and although the room was pleasent, I felt the bath was too small, and the mattress really needs changing, the floor would have proved a better night sleep!! Breakfast was over priced for what you got and it wasn't very warm.

The hotel is in a nice location and ideal for visiting The Peak District and the nearby towns of Matlock and Bakewell. Hotel not as portrayed on web site and did not meet expectations. As it was January when we stayed we expected the log fire in the lounge to be lit, which wasn't. The central heating system was faulty and so there was no heating to our bedroom and en-suite although the manager did provide one small electric heater on request. An outside line could not be obtained on the room telephone. Only three small pillows provided for a double bed. Although our room was clean and comfortable (apart from being cold) the hotel generally is in need of decorating. The food at the evening meal was good but expensive considering the small portion of the main course and the Full English breakfast was only just warm. Disappointing.

We only stayed for the one night, but booking in was at 2pm, but we had to be at a wedding at 2pm and needed to change. there was no hesitation in accomodating us with a room that was free and clean and this was at around 11.15am! The bed was fabulously comfy, the views were gorgeous, i only wish we had had no plans so we could have mooched around and enjoyed the ambience and food. would definately go again. very old fashioned in a good way and fabulous value for money, thankyou.

Could hear every noise from surrounding rooms. Heater in bathroom didn't work and it was freezing! No hot water for a bath or shower! Mattress should have been in a skip! Couldn't sleep for the springs embedding in my spine! Decor in room was very dated. We will definately not be returning to Makeney Hall!

The location was lovely with beautiful views and the grounds were kept very clean and tidy. The hotel itself was very grand and romantic. Perfect for the wedding we were attending. The staff were very friendly and did try to help when there were any problems. We would visit again. The shower in our room did not work and they could not swap us to another room becuase the hotel was fully booked. This was ok as we were next to my parents room but then their shower also broke and did not work so we couldn't have a shower. They were unable to fix it while we were there but did give us some money back although not much.

Close to great pubs and walks. Nice setting. Staff unfriendly. Dominated by weddings and wedding parties. Central heating very noisy. Rooms a bit shabby. No dinner available on New Years Day. Hotel run for convenience of staff rather than customers. Noisy maids hoovering from 7am on landing outside rooms.
