Excellent selection of breakfast foods
Poor choice of menu for main meal, would preferr to see more options for traditional english fare. Mix up on type of beds required, even though it was fully detailed on booking forms.
Location - lovely. Room - newly decorated - very clean and comfortable. very quiet - I had a good nights sleep.
Quality of evening meal not very good. I know it's not the Ritz, but I ordered fish and chips, and it was difficult to find the 'tiny' portion of fish under so much dried out batter!! second night 'The Makeney" Burger was supposedly grilled, but in reality was burnt! It was replaced with Sausage and Mash which was lovely!!
the rooms were large ,light & clean. The room we had was quiet, the single beds were very comfortable. The bathroom was clean and the shower was nice and hot.
The hair dryer was no where near a mirror! The disco was in a separate room -one had to decide to go into the room from the outer room which did not encourage the people to take part.
The room was amazing! We stayed on a Sunday evening and were upgraded to the bridal suite. It was like a ballroom and the bed was really comfortable.
The view could have been better, but it was still nice - of fields.
Breakfast was great
Bed very soft and sprung mattress not comfortable. Room very stuffy and tea stains down the skirting board. Drinks very over priced.
When there was a wedding didn't seem keen to serve food for other guests.
Location Relaxed atmosphere - not always easy to feel when travelling alone Food Friendly staff Lovely garden Parking on site
good size room comfortable beds good breakfast
Warning: prebook your breakfast or it will be an extra £6.50 pp which we weren't told about!! not good
The grounds are beautiful and perfect for a romantic stroll of discovery. A lovely hotel in a lovely setting. Would definitely stay again, and recommend to friends and family. Staff were friendly and helpful, food excellent. Overall, superb.
Wifi was very slow. No drama for us, as we were on holidays, but could be off putting for business travellers. Frankly, this is about the only thing I can find to fault.
closeness to peak district
firealarms going off in the morning average breakfast
The room was lovely, very clean and spacious. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Will definitely be staying again and would recommend to friends and family.
No mirror in the room, only in bathroom... Was no good when trying to straighten my hair.
Gemma - the only sociable receptionist - Very understaffed. Deliveries should not be by front door starting at 7am - wakes you up.Complain and Gemma sorts things out immediately - well done
We enjoyed the Allo Allo comedy meal, but disappointed it was not in the hotel dining room but a function room.
This was to be a special weekend, the 25th anniversary of the day we met. I asked the receptionist if it was a nice room and she said it was as it had just been refurbished. It was in an annexe. There was no mirror in the bedroom which made it awkward when styling my hair. The receptionist bought me a shaving mirror. No hook to hang dressing gown on in the bathroom. The desk/dressing table was old and part had broken off leaving a sharp, rough edge. Windows missed up inside the double glazing and they were very dirty and dusty, so not able to see the gardens very well. The workmen were drilling during the afternoon, so we went out. Internet signal weak. The room cost £80 for room only. Breakfast cost £10 each. I complained about the issues but nothing offered in the way of a discount. We might as well have been in a travel lodge because we never saw Makeney Hall except to check in/out.
Very comfortable bed.
Great location and friendly staff.
We were put in a room in the annex. The decor was very poor and we were missing extra tea/coffee for the 3 of us, a tv remote, enough pillows etc. I visited reception and asked for the items and mentioned I was disappointed with the standard of the room. Oh dear came the reply, but the receptionist deliver the missing items. That night, hardly slept a wink with the noise from the room above. At least it was quiet between 2 and 6! The staff mentioned at breakfast the hotel was full so we saw no point in asking for a new room. The second night, thankfully the herd of elephants above had gone! The final morning, we asked for the person in charge to visit our room. We strongly felt that if they had known the substandard decor, cleanliness, etc the room would not have been let. Sadly, we had to seek out the deputy manager as they did not visit on the first request. They admitted they personally did not inspect the rooms and also admitted it was substandard. They informed us that they are upgrading (not helping our stay though!). They said they would pass everything on to the manager who would contact us. This was at the end of May-we have received no contact. We said that we knew they were full, so saw no point in asking for another room. She replied by saying, yes, they were full, but could have found us an alternative. If they were not full, this room should not have been let in my opinion. A loose, wobbly toilet, noisy pipes, poor decor, dirty drawers, stained paint in all areas of the bathroom, crumbling plaster behind the door, a bath and no shower in a disabled room...the list goes on. We have waited for avresponse from the hotel, but have received none from the hotel. Therefore, we are posting this to ensure that when you book-make sure you do not stay in the annex unless the room has been upgraded. I note that the manager responds to comments on this site.
Room was a great size and bed was comfortable. Facilities provided were fair.
Needs refurbishment in the rooms - lots of paint peeling
the location was great
the cooked breakfast not the best
The room was lovely and spacious. The building was gorgeous and the grounds stunning. Afternoon tea was also lovely .
The room was lovely and spacious but It smelt of cigarette smoke but that wasn't the fault of the hotel if the previous customer sneaked a cigarette out of bathroom window. Although in character it was a tiny bit dated and could hear the disco in our room on the second floor also the lift was broken BUT having said that I would definitely stay there again
Beautiful setting, comfortable, clean room. Breakfast was good.
Evening meal was of poor standard in my opinion. Only moisturiser and shampoo in bathroom, no shower cap, face cloths or shower gel which I would expect from a hotel of this supposed quality.
Your website is very miss leading!!!
Rm 11 was very pleasant and sunny. Comfortable bed and plenty of tea/coffee. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice. Plenty of car parking.
Hotel overall was a bit tatty and needed some updating and a bit more cleaning in some rooms ie shelves under sink etc. We were "upgraded" to a room that was tatty and had 2 big air con units outside our windows (rm 19) so we moved rooms.
the sofa bed had stains all over it I thought the decot needed re vamping and it was to hot
The location as it was perfect for what we wanted.
Rooms were very dated, no a/c or access to a fan which was unusual for a hotel, I thought the room was very overpriced for what it was.
Friendly, helpful staff.
Rooms are a little tired
