Makeney Hall  

The staff were very courteous and friendly. Ample parking right outside the hotel. The ambience of the hotel was olde worlde. Good breakfast with plenty if toast and fruit juice. From reading other reviews of this beautiful building I would not have booked. However, on staying there I found the complaints made to be petty, the building is old and as an old building you would not expect it to be perfect. If you want double glazed windows and an hotel with no character go to a Holiday Inn. Makeney Hall is a beautiful, old building, with excellent staff and facilities.

the carpets are in need of a good clean or replacing, especially downstairs as they smell. The front door needs polishing and the reception area could be made more friendly. In fact the whole place needs a good clean.

The fire smoke alarm went off in our room at 8 in the morning. After being at a wedding all day the previous day, the smoke alarm ruined the day. The room poor decor. View of the car park

This was not our first visit to this hotel. We have chosen to stay here due to its close proximity to our relations and neighbouring towns/attractions.

Although the hotel could do with some updating we have found it comfortable and the staff helpful. We prefer the breakfast menu rather than that of the dinner as we feel it offers more choice and better value.

The hotel had a nice traditional feel and a lot more character than many modern bland hotels .

The friendliness of the staff.A Reasonably economical week end. The food was acceptable but not mind blowing.

The Milford Suite for dining: large, souless, depressing. It did not help that our booking for dinner had not reached the dining room and we were not expected. We waited in the bar while a table was prepared but no none came to take an order.

We arrived in a blizzard and the warmth in the rooms was so welcoming. Excellent breakfast in the morning before we started digging ourselves out.

Nothing about the hotel. Enjoyed the reason for us staying there and thats all.

Reception staff very rude, not just to us. Breakfast was dreadful. Rooms were very dated, noisy, no shower in one room and there was mould.

Room 37!! It is in need of refurbishment. The sink has tape around it holding the column to the wall. The tile floor is freezing cold (painful to stand on it barefooted) and the heated towel rail is ineffective against the cold weather. In the main room, only the small radiator working. The large radiator didn’t work, it had the thermostatic valve removed and it was leaking slightly. The heating went off at around 11pm and the temperature in the room dropped quite quickly. This was reported to the staff after the first night and we were offered the option to change rooms or they could supply an electric heater. We opted for the heater as it would have meant packing all our stuff to move, and then unpack only, to repack the following morning to leave. The heater was not there on our return for the day so we needed to request it again. It was delivered by the manager who seemed totally unaware of the radiator not working and the thermostatic valve being missing. The electric heater kept the temperature above freezing after the main heating went off at 11pm.

Location very good, didn't dine so can't comment but restuarant looked very nice.

Bed in room 38 was extremely poor with what felt like a hole in the middle so a very uncomfortable night, also the walls were like paper as it felt like next door was in the room with us very clear conversation heard.

Mediocre staff at reception and confusion about cost of breakfast. Breakfast very poor for a 4 star hotel. The usual Luke warm buffet that can be found at most budget hotels. But, diy toast in a 4 star hotel? Really not impressed.

It was comfortable and clean with good facilities and yet retained a lot of character.

Nothing really. I have already booked another room for my daughter this weekend.

the new years eve dinner and disco was excellent, the staff were all very friendly and helpful.

Location and breakfast in room

Noisy plumbing, unfriendly and unhelpful reception staff, cracks in wall, mildew on windows, weddings are priority and are disturbing for other guests.

The hotel and setting is beautiful and reception staff very friendly, welcoming and helpful on arrival. The room was comfortable but not what I would call luxurious.

The room was a little dark probably due to the small windows though I acknowledge it is a period property. The furnishings are a little tired. The shower (room 4) was pathetic and could not be used. Breakfast was average if not a little "dried up" and cold. Service was a bit tired and erratic. Overall I think this is a beautiful hotel in a beauiful setting and has great potential. It is just a bit tired, in need of a face lift and an injection of customer focused thinking.

Good sized room.

I had a room which was ensuite, however there was a bath but no shower. Mould was visible surrounding the bath. No reception for the TV.

We were very impressed by the welcome and service given to us by your receptionist.We came for a friends wedding and the standard of service,food,and overall wedding facility was first class.

We stay here alot and usually give everything 10/10. It was not up to scratch this time.

Shower door broken and not mended, although we reported it. Bathroom Radiator also not working.No tv for the three days either.

The location and professional manner in which the hotel was run as was expected from a star rated hotel. We attended for a wedding and the arrangements could not be faulted.

The only comment is that the room number 15 albeit, one of the highest priced available, was a bit "tired" looking and dated e.g. the only chair in the room had the arms very badly worn and the foam stuffing was fully exposed giving a very bad impression of the quality being paid for!
