In the heart of Oxford, across from the Ashmolean Museum, The Macdonald Randolph Hotel features sumptuous bedrooms and a luxury spa. With an award-winning restaurant, there is also a famous bar.
Score from 793 reviews Very good
Just a few minutes’ walk from Oxford city center, the Head of the River is on the banks of the scenic Thames River. The traditional inn features a riverside terrace and a stylish restaurant.

This elegant boutique hotel is situated in the heart of Oxford, surrounded by the historic college buildings. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout, and there is parking a 5-minute walk away.

This peaceful, elegant hotel with a country-manor style is a 10-minute walk from the center of Oxford. It has a restaurant and bar, a cozy lounge, and pleasant guest bedrooms.
Score from 747 reviews Very good
I booked and paid for bed and breakfast. When I went to breakfast I was informed that a cooked breakfast would cost £2.00 more than I had paid. I think that this is a poor idea.
The building and branding maintain features of the purpose built castle then prison. Very unquie hotel which celebrates the legacy of the building with ambient but modern decor. #prisontwist
Occasionally the dim lighting in the rooms - meant for atmosphere is impractical. I couldn't see myself cracking out an end of period report in my room or poring over a spreadsheet! It's a room for relaxing in...
Rooms very comfortable. Within easy walk of town and museums.
Dining in very expensive
VERY HARD BED
Staff as always polite and down to earth. Rooms very clean and comfortable.
Revisited this hotel and had previously spent a relaxing evening in the bar after dinner. However disappointed to find bar closed in the evening for a private function. Not informed of this on booking in.
great location, hotel was clean, indifferent and perfect food.
poor communication of hotel refurbishment. sadly we were awaken at 9am on a leisurely break by carpet fitters ripping all of carpets off floor to replace new ones. Spoilt our last morning sadly.
The few staff we encountered were friendly.
Both public areas and bedrooms terribly dark. Couldnt read the bill at Reception and couldnt even count the change in my pocket when paying for a drink at the bar as so dark! Room very small and the bed was appalling - so hard. Air con wasnt working very well but was so noisy it was too loud to have on, therefore even with the tiny windows open it was still far too hot. I dont recall a worse nights sleep in a hotel anywhere. In the main bedroom there were only round 3 pin sockets which were for table lamps - there was no way you could charge a mobile phone without doing it in the nearest normal socket up the steps in the entrance part near the bedroom door- Quite ridiculous. Paid £159 for a poor nights sleep. Would definitely not stay again.
Amazing refurb . A nice change
So hot. The air con didn't work
Loved it all....
We loved the relaxed, quiet atmosphere. We stayed in the A-Wing top floor, it's worth the bit extra. Room was excellent!! It was our first visit to any Malmaison hotel and we'd highly recommend it - the meal we had in the restaurant was top notch too!!' All staff very nice, professional and not in your face.
Valet parking a bit pricey and the only available option, may shop around if we visit again.
The location is good, easy to access to the high street and main sightseeing places. An italian restaurant is just in front of the hotel. Very nice food there.
A bit expensive for parking but good service (28.50 per day). Do not like the room at ground floor, too depressing. Have to upgrade (70 pounds per night). So ensure to book your room on the 1st or 2nd floor.
Location, valet parking and cleanliness.
Shower ran cold after a minutes use was main problem. Parts of bed had stitches poking through but it was large enough to avoid. Checking in/out was poor and inefficient. Staff seemed unaware of queues. When shower was mentioned the reaction was just, "oh, doesn't it?" and moved on. So very disappointing for the most expensive hotel in Oxford.
Shower does not work well and never gets cold.
The location and quality of the hotel were fantastic. A beautiful venue steeped in history and restored to an extremely high standard.
From the moment we arrived there was a lack of attention to customer service. Poor communication, poor service in the cocktail bar and restaurant. No one seemed in control or seemed to be leading the staff. Many were new staff without customer care training. Such a let down to such a great hotel.
Love the novelty factor of it being an ex prison
Basically everything was great. You even let me extend my underground parking the next day so we could wander around Oxford.
We loved the quirky features of the hotel as it used to be a prison.
Our room was situated over the slug and lettuce bar therefore it was very noisy at night, it was a shame this wasn't made clear when we booked considering the price we paid.
The style of the hotel was amazing! The hotel still looked like a prison with some of the old features still intact. Rooms were well equipped, staff extremely friendly and the cocktail bar was brilliant. Great location as well!
Lack of facilities - no gym or pool on site. The only real downside for me was the incredibly slow car valet service. It took 25 mins for me to get into my car once I checked out.
We were in the main block and the room was comfortable and novel
We were there Over Valentine's and the restaurant was very busy and the food suffered and not worth the money asked, however breakfast was good as was the service. The bar didn't have much atmosphere.
fantastic setting in the prison. Lots of the original features. Such comfortable rooms and well layed out. So many extras in the room (at a cost). Nice, friendly staff.
Not much indication of the shows that have used this location in their series. Parking very expensive but was was right outside the hotel very convenient
The food was good but cold
Friendly staff. Comfy room.
Room was way too hot. Thermostat didn't seem to work even on lowest setting no respite from he heat.
Staff were really helpful and cheerful. 12.00 noon checkout. Good sized fluffy bath and hand towels.
Rather grubby and slightly torn net curtains.
Room was lovely, breakfast was very good, staff were friendly & happy. Was a nice atmusfier to the hotel, would recommend
Location , excellent for the town centre the hotel is quirky for sure with some features from it's time as a jail
The whole place was dark and gloomy the levels of light precluded reading or even seeing into the wardrobe. The room had no drawer space so anyone staying for more than a few days would be stuck for storage. The car Parking is a rip off at 28 per day.
