A charming English manor house close to route A1, with a gym, swimming pool, sauna and spa. Wi-Fi is free and food is served all day. Built on foundations which date back to the 12th Century, the hotel is reputed to have been Henry VIII’s hunting lodge and home to the Eden family. It houses secret passages and even a friendly ghost or two! Set in its own landscaped grounds and equipped with multi-functional rooms and a spa, it is an ideal base for exploring Northumbria's many castles, cathedrals and the Roman Wall. Friendly and welcoming staff, but a very tired old building. We could hear everything going on in the next bedroom, walls are very thin!

The staff are very friendly, and service at mealtimes was so efficient it was actually a bit too quick! More time between courses would have been good. The hotel is full of character, including creaks and genuine antique shabbiness. Don't stay here if you are looking for minimalist chic! Bathroom was modern and clean, We had no hot water in our room on arrival. There was a problem with the boiler, but it was fixed by late evening, and we had a reduction of our bill to compensate.

The Manor House has been beautifully renovated & the staff are very helpful, meals a little pricey but lovely. The room was small however it was purchased at a bargain price, however there is obviously problems with the heating as it didn't work and it was minus 3 outside. When I rang to report this the staff were quiet unfazed & just sent a convector heater up.

Recieved a resonable rate The room was very cold even with the extra heater which had been left in the room. Although the everything else was very clean the carpets, walls and windows were very dirty. There was no hot water in the morning to have a shower

The hotel was very comfortable with great facilities. My only comment would be that I asked the staff on the second day if they could possibly arrange a feather pillow as I get a stiff neck & they said that they would. When I returned to my room later that evening, the same pillows were on the deb which was disappointing

I liked the fact that this is a litlle diffferent from the chain hotels and feels quite historical. The room was spacious, clean and quiet and the breakfast was excellent. The hotel is located in countryside. The 'Stable Bar' was a little strange in that it was set apart from the main buildings and to get coffee, you had to go back to the main building and then it would be carried through. Also, it was advertised as being close to Durham, but it actually takes about 30 minutes to get to Durham from the hotel.

Shame that the Stable Bar clientele (from the village) were on the rowdy side and made a nuisance of themselves with a single woman guest sitting near us in the courtyard. Staff aware but did nothing (they appeared very friendly with the locals). We understood the fine line between keeping much needed local support and making guests' stay pleasant but I think on this occasion it fell over into "not good". However we intend to return - so do not read too much into this!

The helpful staff went out of their way to be pleasant and helpful. Carried our luggage from the car to the room. The duvets were too warm even with the window open and the pillows were hard. Missing from the room was the handset for the tv, information about the hotel and facilities, mealtimes, spa and safety! The member of staff found the handset under the bed. We found money (£3.40. & hair grips under the bed so the cleaning hadnot been done well enough. Reception did not have spare information sheets that had been missing from the room!

Very comfortable, good quality hot food, quick, courteous service, friendly staff. Magnificent building, but on one overnight stay for bed & breakfast, no time to enjoy a tour of the building, glimpsing only one of the panelled rooms. Have recommended to our local family and would stay again. What???????

“We stay in a lot of hotels around the country but sometimes these character pub hotels often are so much better. This was a lovely pub hotel with loads of character, a great atmosphere with very friendly and helpful staff. The rooms were lovely and spacious with great facilities and the choice of food was the best Ive seen. It was all home cooked and even though it was really busy the service was excellent. Highly recommended.” Denise, Stanley Village, Derbsyhire |
