Owner extremely knowledgeable about the local area and provides visitors with great ideas for making the most of their stay. The breakfast was always quality food freshly cooked and a great start to the day.
Everything was fine. The walk back up to the hotel after an evening in Minehead was not as steep as previous reviewers had suggested.
Hotel's location with great views over Minehead Bay and surrounding countryside. The owners were very friendly and helpful. Full breakfast was provided and the accommodation was clean and comfortable. Highly recommended.

A challenging walk after a night out!
This hotel is the perfect choice for anyone who is bored with the standard chain hotels. The owners are very welcoming and the views from the balcony are fantastic. The rooms are nicely decorated with period furniture and breakfast was good.
Nothing - All good
Comfortable and enjoyable stay in quiet area of minehead within walking distance of town.
location was superb overlooking bay.
Quite a hillclimb to get there. No problem with a car or if you're fit!!!
This was an excellent choice for us. The view from our room was tremendous, the room was great, our hosts were friendly and helpful, suggesting places to go and visit during our stay, and the breakfasts were all we could want. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel to anyone wanting either a short stay or a longer one.
There was not much wrong with this hotel. Just be aware that the hillside location, while giving excellent views, means its a bit of a climb back out of town if you're walking. We drove but found easy parking so it was no problem.
Upon arrival at Marston Lodge, we were struck by the traditional decoration and a friendly welcome which made us feel at home straight away. Our room was clean and comfortable, accompanied by a modern en-suite. The hotel facilities included a spacious breakfast room, quirky snooker room, homely living room, and an "honesty bar". The upstairs balcony offered great views of Minehead and the beach front. The cooked English breakfasts were fantastic and were made from locally sourced ingredients! On our first morning, hotel owner Alex took time to generously equip us with a map of Exmoor with which he annotated, suggesting places to see and things to do in order to maximise our time there. It was our first time in Minehead and with great thanks to Marston Lodge, it won't be our last.
We liked everything about this hotel. The building and its decor are individual and attractive, and the owners clearly know and love the area going out of their way to help patrons find their perfect day out. The perfect spot was out on the balcony looking over Minehead from up on the hill. Peace quiet and a beautiful view whichever way you looked and the perfect place to read the owners history of the property contained in the information folder-I would recommend taking the trouble, it is very interesting and brings the place even more to life! Breakfast was delicious, especially the home grown eggs! Mother and son(a typical 16 year old)-we both had a heavenly time.
Having to leave.....
Welcoming reception, excellent decor and location and a particular highlight for us was the tour around Exmoor provided enthusiastically by Alex our host.
Tip the dog and towels.
No blackout curtains so impossible to sleep in. Air con would have been welcomed. Water in shower didn't drain out. Bedspread was awful. Fountain outside window disturbed sleep as window required to be left open for fresh air.
Warm and friendly welcome to a hotel which provided a comfortable base to explore Exmoor and the surrounding area. Lovely views from our room, great gardens and balcony - and excellent breakfasts.
wonderful view from bedroom
to many stairs for room we had
The welcome and hospitality of the owners.A lovely comfortable hotel
Marston Lodge is just a lovely place to stay and I can't recommend it highly enough. It's a beautiful period house, elegantly and comfortably furnished with a sense of coming home as you step through the door. It's lovely and clean with attractive gardens. The owners, Alex and Naomi, and their family made us feel entirely welcome and nothing was too much trouble. Service was efficient, friendly and warm. Never over the top, always glad to help. Alex has an encyclopaedic knowledge of the area and happily supplies maps on which he marks routes designed for individual guests based on their interests and needs, with points of interest which a stranger to the area would be unlikely to find unaided. We took advantage of this and had some brilliant days out, for which we thank him. Our room was gorgeous with huge windows affording stunning views of the sea, the town below and the rolling Somerset countryside. Most important, the bed was supremely comfortable and the en suite stylish and spotlessly clean. Food was faultless - breakfast was delicious and fresh items locally sourced. The usual arrangement is b&b, but there is an option to eat in if you arrange this with Naomi in the morning. There is no set menu, just talk to her about what you like and let her cook for you. We did this on the last evening. Had we known just what an amazing cook she is, we wouldn't have eaten anywhere else. Really, try for yourself.
The Hotel had stunning views and was clean and comfortable with a great shower. Breakfast was delicious. The owner was very attentive towards guests and had a broad knowledge of local and surrounding areas. All in all a very enjoyable stay. We would recommend this Hotel.
There was nothing to dislike.
Location, service, helpfulness of owners
Having to wait until 5 o'clock to check in, only single opening window in room, no lift (but owner offered to carry some luggage for us)
When we arrived the owner was shabbily dressed and wore wellington boots indoors which created a very poor first impression . The room was small and decorated in a virulent yellow colour . the owner invited us to use a balcony the rail of which was by his own ad mission was dangerous and gave no protection from a 30 foot drop . The only good thing was the breakfast which included eggs from his own chickens which roamed free in his garden outside our window . We most certainly would not recommend this hotel to anyone or use it again ourselves
We loved this small hotel. Owners very helpful and very friendly. The room was comfortable and well furnished. Excellent bathroom with walk-in shower. We ate in in the evening. Lovely food. A pure gem of a place which we wish we had discovered before. We look forward to a return visit as soon as possible.

Nice room with attractive views overlooking the town Very helpful host who provided us with a route through the countryside to Lynton
A bit of a hilly location and not easy to find initially by car
Good quality of breakfast, enthusiasm and friendliness of owners, knowledgeable advice about surrounding countryside, convenience for walking on cliff tops. Outlook from hotel over surrounding countryside and town- but offset by difficulty of access if not good hill climber.
Absence of wardrobe in bedroom, difficult shower, location on hillside not easy for older travellers and necessitating use of car to get to town centre (in particular back up fairly steep road).
Superb! Very stylish, fantastic location, amazing views, wonderful host. Great breakfast, I stayed in room 10 amazing views on 2 sides. Very highly recommended, can't wait to stay again. Also snooker table, bar, homely longue. Great collections of objects & curios. One of the very best places I've stayed.
Comfortable warm room large windows with good views, friendly atmosphere and good food. Our hosts were always very helpful and informative.
The Marston Lodge Hotel is a beautifully decorated small hotel overlooking the water in Mineshead. The room we had was extremely comfortable and charmingly decorated. Our host was very helpful in suggesting places to visit and restaurants. Since we were a little off season, we were able to get last minute reservations. Also, the wi-fi really worked! Breakfast was included and was delicious including eggs from the proprietor's hens.
Room was comfortable with all the usual facilities.Snooker table a bonus for passing some time away, proprietors very friendly and prepare a great breakfast.Wonderful views over Minehead and surrounds, town centre only a ten minute walk away.
