We were "en route" from Scotland,so just overnight,and could not use the very good facilities.However our room was fine and the staff very friendly and helpful.We would stay there again if in the area and would recommend it to friends.My wife will probably recommend it to travel magazine.

Felt the "library" was very badly lit and not as Cosy as it could have been. An open fire would have given it more atmosphere.

The staff were all very nice. Our room was fab we got upgraded so we were very pleased. The restaurant was lovely staff very good.

Leisure facilities

Poor attitude of staff, terrible restaurant service, rubbish bags left in corridor for hours.

Great hotel in lovely location, very tastefully decorated with excellent restaurant and great facilities. Our room was very spacious with separate dressing room and good sized bathroom. The staff, particularly in the restaurant, were terrific, very friendly and welcoming.

The same music tape was played over and over again, in the conservatory at tea time, in the restaurant at dinner and again at breakfast!

Very relaxing setting and excellent, clean facilities. Water hot, shower worked, nice spacious rooms. Very relaxing with friendly, helpful staff. A real getaway!

The buildings and the gardens were magnificent

Not being able to have dinner in the Library, was poor but this was compounded by not having a menu for the greenkeepers lodge in the room. I would in hindsight have preferred room service. Having No wifi was a problem I wouldn't expect at a hotel especially if the surrounding area has no phone signal. .

Inability, despite attempting to book 3 days beforehand, to have a table in the dining room for my wife's birthday, main reason for going. Disappointing meal and venue in the Keepers restaurant as a substitute. Should have gone to local pub which would have had a better choice

I liked the hotel very much and it was the first time I have stayed there. I would definately return depending on the price. Lovely location and friendly homely place which is very relaxing in gorgeous surroundings.

My friends would not go there with us this time as they charge £10 each for any dog which we think excessive. Unfortunately they found something else nearby but would have preferred to stay at Matfen, but budget wouldn't allow. Anyone who would take a dog to a hotel such as this would only do so knowing their animals were well travelled, extremely well behaved and trained, and clean. It is usual in my opinion that dogs are better behaved and less trouble in all areas than children and are certainly less disruptive than most. I do think that instead of charging fees like this for a dog just to be in the room, perhaps a deposit bond should be taken from the hotels so that any damage or the room is not left in excellent clean condition as clients found it, then they would forfeit some of that money. Good idea don't you think. A sum of perhaps £150.00 on a credit card or the cost of the whole room would be fair. I am sure many animal lovers would agree and the hotels would fair better from people who would wish to stay rather than having to find another place that does not charge. Think about it Matfen Hall and be the first to do this, lots of animal lovers out there who travel alot.
