A very enjoyable stay at the Hall. Staff were very friendly. Spa treatment was wonderful. Food at dinner time was fantastic. Breakfast was just as good and the waitress very helpful. The only disappointment was that they automatically placed a charge to thier registered charity onto my account (before settling bill) without first notifying me. I am happy to give to charity particularly if the question had been asked upon checking out. However to assume that people will pay without any explanation (or request) is very rude.

The attitude of the staff especially Danny the Assistant Manager made up for some of the deficiencies we experienced on arrival. Some weaknesses in service we put down to difficulties of getting the best ie best trained and experienced people over Christmas.

the ambiance, and place itself is fantastic. Clean, beautifully presented, romantic old fashioned rooms well matched with contemporary modern facilities and bedrooms. Staff superb, breakfast tasty, fantastic value for money for what I paid and what was available. just the price of drinks in the bar, but this was not unexpected

we decided last minute to go away for my girlfriends birthday. Matfen came up at a knocked down price and looked fab so decided to book. We were over the moon when driving upto the Hall it was fabulous. When we arrived the receptionist was lovely and friendly and we were nicely surprised to learn we had been upgraded for free to a Premier room. Our room was outstanding just what we wanted and lovely and clean. All the staff were very helpful and friendly. And the spa/pool was fantastic. We would defo be staying again. The grounds and rooms were fabulous too.

Very Comfortable, good facilities in excellent surroundings. A bit of confusion about what and where meals were being served which resulted in slow service.

Our week-end trip to Newcastle City was made truly delightful because of our stay at Matfen Hall. The grounds at Matfen are stunning. We were made to feel welcome. Our room decor was 1st class. We settled in very quickly. The breakfast was the best ever. Fresh, nicely presented, piping hot, lots of variety. The reception staff were very attentative and friendly, The informal eating place in the conservatory close at 6pm. The Keepers Cottage eatery was more down market, and although the food was good it didnt have the same atmosphere as the main hotel. It was more suited to the golfers.

Breakfast was superb, served in a beautiful room overlooking the golf course. The pool was always nice and quiet, and the fire and ice experience ie sauna, steam and salt room was different and very invigorating. We ate in the Keepers Lodge which although not very romantic or atmospheric serves very good food at reasonable prices. There is also a very nice local pub in Matfen village which serves food at weekends, and a brewery 2 miles away which my husband was delighted to visit. Overall we had a very pleasant stay and would return to this hotel.

Great country location but then close and easy access to Newcastle shopping. Very good breakfast served in a beautiful room setting, and for a change, the background music was something pleasant to listen to.

A relaxing experience with staff very friendly and eager to help without being intrusive. We only experienced the breakfast, but this was of good quality and well-cooked with attentive and efficient service. The view over the golf course is delightful and I would highly recommend this hotel.

We live quite near so when I spotted a good deal in Booking.com's 'Flash Sale' we decided to stay overnight so that we could use the gym and swimming pool facilities. My idea of a 'Boot Camp' - plenty of exercise. Our only regret was that we hadn't booked a longer break!

“We had a very enjoyable 2 night stay at The George Hotel. Our room was very comfortable and overlooked the river and the gardens. Our room was very clean and quite spacious. We stayed 2 nights dinner, bed and breakfast and the food was very tasty. Our evening meal consisted of a 3 course meal with a choice. Breakfast was self service and again the food was very nice. The bar was very comfortable serving refreshments during the day. I visited The George Hotel in 2007 and will definately be returning.” Jacqueline, Tyne & Wear |
