On a leafy tree-lined avenue, this elegant Victorian hotel features, good food, south facing gardens and a sun terrace. Somerton Lodge is a 5-minute walk from the centre of Shanklin.

Score from 145 reviews Good
Good, convenient location.
Breakfast was fair - tea/coffee pre-prepared. Had to ask for fresh tea, but it came very readily.
Very run down, needs modernising decor
We really enjoy our stay . Service was really good . Staff was really helpfull . If travel again deffinently mayfair hotel is the choice ...
The service friendliness helpful staff, good view, nice location
No lift old building, too many doors and stairs for a three yr old to go thru
Hotel was very nice and Cleanin. Lady who We talk to always was amazing and Lovely. Would recomend to everyone as ís good for money and hotel ís amazing. And location ís great.
Would prefered if there was more options for cooked breakfast for vegetarians. As there was only beans, one egg and one hashbrown. But is any more options. As could breakfast. Also We didnt Like that bathroom didnt have ventilation or window to Open
Friendly staff, very clean. Comfortable room if a little dated. I would recommend and stay there again
There was a nice view at the hotel and the staff is very friendly.
The hotel needs definitely a refurbishment because is very old and a bit smelly. The bathrooms are very small and darker and if you buy something from the bar which is very poor you have to pay double then others places. We bought some poor sandwiches and paid to much for the . We will not go any more next time.
The breakr the bathroom, tv
Nothing - Badly needs refurbishment.
breakfast.hosts were nice people.
hotel needs updating and painting.carpets were disgusting. draw in bedroom had childs toy in it,and sweet paper under bed,so could not have been cleaned well. duvet cover ripped.
Sea view room was not much of view, and not worth the extra cost.
Outside the hotel
having no shower facility not even the minimum in europe, smelly carpet, no room cleaning, tv didnt work properly, poor maintenance through out the hotel.
dirty cups and saucers, dirty and grubby carpets, torn and ripped shower curtain, broken bathroom door handle (dangerous), and well overpriced.
Close to the sea front and beach, good access by car and foot. Adequate parking on our stay. Close to town and eating places.
Quite a lot of stairs so make sure you check if you have any disabilities. Steps to the front entrance and to most floors and no lift.
The view from our room was excellent. Free parking. And leaving it all behind was excellent.
Arrived steps full if litter and fag butts. Room hadn't been cleaned properly. Found 3 dead spiders on pillow ! Sheets had stains not been changed. Advised owner and nothing was done about it. Shower riser not fixed to the fittings properly so kept falling off when showering. Shower wall and tray was full of hairs. Cheap thin shower curtain probably from the pound shop. Kept ripping when you pulled it across as the hoops we're not the right ones either. Too short water on floor slippery and no mat provided either. No room service after 1st 2nd night had to ask for a top up on tea and coffee etc. Had to ask for clean Towels and a toilet roll as we had about an inch on the one left by previous people. Toilet smelt of sewage. Windows were really hard to open and shut. Dining hall tablecloths had not been changed had stains in when we arrived and same stains when we left. I had 2 hairs in the traditional breakfast one long head hair the other short pubic hair. Made me sick as I'd chewed it and had to peel it from my mouth... The first day the breakfast was dry and over cooked and not complete. Bad sound proofing could hear everyone in adjacent rooms and the creaking of floorboards from above us Was awful. Our room was above the lounge and all you could hear was Indian music and them shouting above it. Doors slamming past 12pm terrible nights sleep. Never again!!! Glad to be home.
Good wifi and great location
Too many bad points to fully cover, but here is a start: Carpets never cleaned, light fittings not correctly secured to ceiling and walls, thick dust on all surfaces, badly in need of redecoration throughout, swimming pool no longer available, rubbish and cigarette ends litter the garden, shambolic breakfast service, filthy tablecloths left over from service at least three days earlier, most bulbs not working in the lights, bath sealant was probably applied by someone using thier thumbs so it looks appalling, door locks don't work, window catches broken, cracks in the building, probably the ugliest building on the island.
Swimming pool filled in no entertainment at all dirty rooms spiders cobwebs and insects in room tiny rooms Water foul taste ten minute wait for toast only one working garden unkept too many steps nothing like the brochure good positon needs a renovation
Parking facilities Room cleanliness Good food at breakfast
Shaver point did not work
The location- near the beach.
The hotel needs refurbishing.
Smelly room Bed bug bites Food Noise Lack of view
Attitude of owners Room facilities not freshened up on daily basis Missing shower cubicle door replaced by plastic shower curtain tied up to frame Towel rail in bathroom loose and falling off No hot water in sink on one day Full English breakfast varied from day to day, either no tomatoes or no mushrooms Did not get fresh towels for the whole week, found damp towels folded up neatly and placed on bed which had been made up Did mention to owners state of shower curtain on arrival and was replaced a day after We enjoyed the Isle of Wight but the hotel did not deserve the two star rating from Visit England Other issues not mentioned to owners because we just wanted a good break from work
Lady on reception was helpful and flexible when we didn't like the first room.
