Friendly service, lively atmosphere, good real ale choice, good food. Friday night has live music so the rooms can suffer noise. So join the party.

The friendliness of the staff No double glazing on the bedroom windows. Being a pub as well as a hotel, there were a lot of rowdy customers leaving the premises!

Lovely refurbished rooms and very friendly and helpful staff. Melbourne is a cool big village/little town, the hall and gardens are lovely and there are some great boutique shops. We were going to motorbike racing at Donington Park, so it was ideally placed for that, and for the East Midlands Airport. The only problem we had with Harpurs was that it was very noisy. We were there over a weekend and there was a band on Friday night (which finished about 11pm, so wasn't too much of a problem) and then a private function on Saturday night. Some of the guests stayed at the hotel as well, so it was pretty riotous until the wee small hours. It's probably a better place to stay during the week.

Very pleasant staff. Comfortable room. Good parking provision. Very good, reasonably priced food and wine. No complaints although light-sleepers might find night flights to and from East Midlands airport a problem but shutting bedroom window and turning down heating should hopefully deal with that.

It was a convenient location after our wedding reception. Communication from the hotel beforehand was rude and unhelpful. When we arrived at the hotel, after midnight, (having had to send a relative to check in for us earlier), it was unclear which door the key we had been given was supposed to open. The key ring had 2 keys, and we spent half an hour trying to open both doors with both keys. We tried pushing and turning the key, pulling and turning the key...everything. The other couple who were staying at the hotel after attending our wedding had been given a phone number to call if they returned after midnight, and were calling the number without any response. Unfortunately in the end we had to resort to banging on the door. When someone came to let us in he was very rude, we even thought he was a guest that we had woken up but he turned out to be a member of staff. He was also rude to a friend of ours who came to collect us in the morning. The room was of average quality, nothing special, and less than I expected for the price. The tea and coffee tray had used items left on it, it clearly hadn't been checked after the last guest. I was very disappointed in the hotel and would not recommend it.

Room was excellant, fantastic comfy beds in both rooms, nice freindly staff, and the breakfast the following morning was superb. i would recommend to friends to stay in this hotel. Didnt like booking in with my family in the middle of the bar area. Car parking was a little confusing on arrival, had we been informed before our arrival that the parking was in a local authority carpark next to the hotel it would have helped. showers were poor

Location very central and car parking alongside hotel very convenient with charges covered by Harpurs. We arrived late afternoon to find the two Bars packed with customers watching Euro Cup on Large TVscreens. There is no reception.Found Manager behind bar and despite pressure of sales he came out collected our luggage and took us to our room. Staff numbers were few but all were friendly and helpful. There were no chairs in our small but otherwise adequate room. Not noted until Manager had returned to bar.Saw him and within few minutes two large Dining Chairs were delivered. Then realised Toilet seat almost falling off.Washbasin Pop Up Waste not working and unpleasant odour from waste.Managed to sort out without revisiting Bar.Waste plug clearly long term problem. Cleaning cursory.Floor of walk in Shower slippery due to soap deposits .No hand holds.Soap dish but no provision for Shampoo or other accessories. No bath stool and no provision for towels by wash basin. Tea tray provided ok but kettle could only be plugged in at floor level as no provision at tray level despite new wiring.Small waste bin in Bathroom (Not emptied during three daystay). Dining.First evening sown to first floor restaurant and food etc much as expected.Second evening told Wedding party booked so dinner served in corner of downstairs bar.Not very comfortable.Next evening seemed not to know we existed and no provision made.Again space made for us in Bar. Breakfast very basic. We opted for Cold at £4.95 as advertised.Cereals in four large Tupperware containers. No teapots.Make own tea in Cup with Tea bags or use packet coffee.Hot water Boiler.Fresh Milk and Orange Juice OK.Preserves Two small sachet Silver Shred plus large number pack Blackcurrant Jam or Marmite. Toast from Kitchen.Second day nothing replenished but request for Marmalade produced two dishes of good flavour.Same applied third morning. All a bit uninspiring. Basically this is a Pub with rooms. With more attention to small details and a better ambiance it could turn into a hotel.

Friendly staff; extremely comfortable and well appointed room (we had the top-floor suite); good-value pub+ restaurant and full English breakfast; central location. Not necessary to buy a pay and display ticket from the adjacent car park; Harpur's will give you a chit to leave in your windscreen. 2 blown lightbulbs in our room and not quite enough shelving for 2 people's toiletries in the bathroom. But not such a big deal when you're only there for 1 night. Breakfast might seem a bit basic if you aren't filling up on a full English.

Clean comfortable room Good food available at reasonable prices Unfortunately late night live entertainment is not conducive to sleep. Noises from the bar below ( the floor vibrated) and from elsewhere in the building made it a nightmare. During our second night and day there was no heating and so spent a miserable night. However staff were quick to correct problem when notified. No reduction on bill for cold night or noise pollution - despite having explained our discomfort to the management - disappointing!

Melbourne attractive town, room ok. Noise from road, hard to sleep. Stuffy room. Just rooms above a pub, not really a hotel. Staff got me out of bed at 11:30pm to ask me to pay the bill as there was no one on duty the following morning before 9am!

My room ( and I was told, all the rooms) were above the bar area and didn't expect it to be so noisy especially on the Friday evening jazz on. There was no mention of this in the information on the web site. Suggest - a chair in the room would have been useful especially as there is a space for it
