A 16th-century coaching inn in the centre of Bishop’s Castle, The Boar’s Head is a traditional English pub providing accommodation in southern Shropshire.
Score from 47 reviews Superb
Situated in South Shropshire, with free Wi-Fi and free parking on site, this former coaching inn offers a delicious full English breakfast served in a dining room with stained glass windows.
Score from 219 reviews Very good
In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Abel’s Harp in the Shropshire Hills, close to the Welsh/English border.

Christmas grotto and overall feel of Christmas decorations were fabulous
Ensuite was small and lacked a bath
I loved the 'old world' feel of this country hotel. I selected this hotel for its proxmity to Powis Castle, and its full service restaurant. The food and service did not disappoint. We were the only guests staying mid week. I loved every aspect of our one night stopover. The views over the countryside from our bedroom, the lovely appointed dining room, cosy front hall, and wood buring stove heating the drinks lounge. I rather enjoyed having the place all to ourselves, but was rather hoping Mr Darcy would drop in...it has that sort of atmosphere!! Food was first class for dinner and breakfast. Nothing like welsh lamb served with mint sauce...I had forgotten. Portions were generous, fresh and beautifully presented.
I had informed the Hotel about my elderly companions limited use of the stairs. The hotel informed me ahead of time that they do not have an elevator. We managed Ok, on the Grand Staircase and they helped carry all the bags. Might not be for everyone. The 'ladies' restrooms are on the first floor. Perhaps a little refurbishment is probably required but that didn't detract from our lovely stay. I would go back.
Friendliness of staff, ambience and great food
Fascinating Victorian building with real character & a touch of mystery. Wonderful paneled hall with log fire, & fantastic carving in restful elegant dining room. Bedrooms spacious & beautifully decorated in a style sympathetic to the building. Staff lovely, with many genuine personal touches - we felt truly welcomed. Generous good dinner, & splendid breakfast with excellent range of both fruit & hot dishes (including kippers).
Nothing - we loved our stay & will return.
Friendly Staff Excellent Food Lovely big rooms Excellent setting and hotel
TV in twin bedroom not working and hasn't been for at least a couple of years. When ringing reception, no answer and had to go down in person. Shortage of staff, therefore service was let down. Behind single bed, dust on carpet that had not been vacuumed for a while. Hairs found in shower.
Large comfortable bed and indeed bedroom. outstanding restaurant using fresh country produce. Friendly helpful staff. Wonderful old place.
ROOM TOO SMALL FOR TWO PERSONS.BREAKFAST COULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED TO MAKE UP FORIT BUT WASN'T.NOT GOOD VALUE FOR THE PRICE.
The building itself was very attractive, with the appearance of a stately home. The public areas do not disappoint either, being clean and well-presented. The food, in the restaurant or the bar, was excellent.
The bedrooms, whilst clean, were a bit of a let-down, with assortments of random furniture of varying age and condition. The wi-fi signal was too weak to reach our room, so access to the internet had to be gained from the public areas - not always ideal.
Lovely slightly "faded glory" hotel Nice grounds for a pre dinner walk Staff were very helpful Food was delicious and very reasonable Great value for money Rooms well equipped Proper sized towels Bathrobes Free Wifi - although the signal was quite weak it was sufficient. A really lovely over night stay...I will come back on a leisure stay,
Only 2 tiny points that did not affect my stay: I think hotel more for leisure than business..no papers and breakfast starts at 8.30; but as I had to leave earlier they were most insistent they could leave me a continental breakfast. Also only sample menus in the room but they soon brought me a restaurant menu and bar menu- all available for room service.
The hotel was very welcoming and made afriend's wedding very special. Highly recommended. The building was lovely and refurbished room was perfect for us. The whole experience was delightful.
A few areas need to be brought up to date, but this is also part of the charm.
Beautifulbuilding with lovely views. Cooked breakfast good.
Empty glasses left on tables in garden overnight, still there at lunchtime the following day! Lack of staff. Looking a little tired.
Wonderful location Fantastic Food
Suite was very overpriced at £550 for 2 nights should be more priced at £300 to £350
Very comfortable, beautiful setting, peaceful atmospere, great food.
This isn't a critism, more an observation -Although the staff were all lovely and very efficient, they were very casually dressed with no identifying uniformity, which we found was a contrast to the surroundings, but I do want to emphasise that the staff were excellent.
The Hall is practically on the path and good signage led us there.
young and inexperienced staff (university students on holidays). Breakfast was too late for us.
Rural setting and views.
The room was huge and had glorious views across green hills and countryside. The bar food was excellent. The general presentation of the hotel is beautiful and definitely a 'special' hotel.
The location is beautiful but note the taxi fare into Newtown is £25 each way. I was unhappy that an extra £7.50 was charged for breakfast - I only had a bowl of muesli and wasn't told about the charge beforehand.
Location. Staff ambiance.
No wifi in room.
Wonderful setting a kilometer from the winding country roads fab food breakfast was really good
Felt that more staff needed.
Nice old house in the depths of the countryside. Spacious bedrooms. Friendly staff.
Hadn't understood from the internet info that it was a holiday complex with mobile home park within yards of the main building.
excellent food very good value
The location The food
We have previously stayed at the Hotel last year and found it to be very good. Unfortunately on this visit the Standards had slipped there appeared to be a shortage of staff with one Lady attempting to do all tasks on her own. Our room had just been refurbished, the soap dish was broken, the shower tray filled up to the top with water and there was one smal piece of soap which stained the basin etc. The first time we stayed which was 12 months previous we found the hotel to be very good, this is the reason we have written this for the owners to improve the standards.
Excellent location and very peaceful. Good food, both evening dinner in the restaurant and breakfast (although they had run out of marmalade!)
We had a problem with the electricity fusing in our room around 7.30am and could not get a response when phoning reception. My husband went down to reception, was shown the fuse box and re-set the trip!
