Comfortable relaxed atmosphere with sophisticated dining facilities. A.ttentive staff Rooms are a bit on the "faded-glory" side and could do with a re-fit. Floorboards are a bit creaky both in bedrooms and dining room but overall the stay was enjoyable

We did not like the room or hotel at all. The place is run down. The floor was creaky. Tv was from ancient times. The food options after 10 pm were only sandwiches which were rubbish. The rate of the room for a 4 star hotel was exhorbitant and did not offer much at all. They can use that money to rennovate the place. Will definately not recommend to anyone and will not go back.

Location of hotel good. Hotel staff good - dining room staff good/friendly. Quality of bedroom/bathroom not 4 star. The bathroom in particular was old/worn out and taps and fittings needed replacement. Grouting behind bath tabs was moulding. Hand held shower was broken (but didn't want to use it).The room overlooked car park and was dark - two windows but heavy drapes and sheer nets as well. Only one window opening for fresh air.

The Menzies Carlton is a typical English Riviera Hotel, modernised but defineitely stuck in a bit of a time warp, the staff are very friendly and bend over backwards to make the stay pleasant. The evening meal was simply atrocious. The a la carte menu had five main course options; one was not available (despite there being very few diners, so there's no way they "sold out"). Two of the others were "Strictly for two diners", leaving a choice of fish or lamb. I was encouraged to take the Duck off the set menu and found it inedible, in fairness, we were not charged. My wife's lamb was ok but tasteless, as were our starters. We dine out regularly at all levels and varieties of cuisine and this is possible one of the worse meals we've ever been served, by all means stay there it's a lovely place stuck in an Edwardian time warp, but do not eat there.

The staff were friendly and very polite. The ground floor and the facilities were of a high standard. The rooms were very old, furniture needs modernising and completely redecorated. Also we spent time in 3 different rooms and each room had very poor ventilation extremely uncomfortable conditions (too warm), in 1 room 1 of the main windows wouldnt open

Good location with nice sea views Rooms a bit tired in need of refurb, very old televisions in rooms, some rooms showers were poor water pressure and lower level rooms smelt a little stale as the windows hadn't been opened for some time to freshen up the room. Suitable for our business needs but very expensive for the Quality, I wouldn't have stayed here for a family trip

The staff which were mainly Eastern European were very hard workers and very pleasant. The first night we arrived we had dinner at the hotel and it would be the last time. The soup was tasteless and the main course we had was Lamb Shank which had been boiled and then roasted for a short time.Even the Chef could not ruin the ice cream we had for dessert. The hotel looks very tired and needs re-decorating.A Coat of paint and a new chef would be a great improvement.

The sea view room was comfortable, clean and provided a beautiful view. We had to ask separately for the seaview room and were told it would cost an additional £40. They had no record of my request for a sea view room from the Booking.com special request box. The non-seaview room (where my children stayed was in a separate annex and could have been in another hotel.

The staff were particularly good and the food was excellent A disappointing experience at breakfast on the Sunday - 3 of us ordered sauted potatoes and this probably took over half an hour to reach the table. By which time the appetite had gone. Even when this did arrive there was not bacon etc

The heated swimming pool outside. Family rooms are not comfortable in that the pull out sofa bed has very large springs that are not well padded and therefore 'bumpy' and the zed bed is very basic. The main king size bed was fine so that if you had 2 rooms that would be ok but expensive! The pool is old and cracked, and the filter does not work efficiently, but it is heated which is a big bonus with the British unpredictable weather!

The bed and bedding was quite comfortable. The location. The outside pool. I paid nearly £300 for 2 nights. Despite arriving on a warm day in June, the room we were given was freezing, dark and dingey. The bathroom was in need of a refurb. I immediatley asked to see another room which we took as it was bigger and the Bathroom looked better than the other alternative. This however, was still cold and dark (even putting the lights on did not improve things). They had clearly had problems with Damp as the wallpaper in one corner had been cut out and replaced. The Carpet also felt damp throughout the bedroom area. Reception provided us with a fan heater as the massive radiator in the room did not appear to work. On the 1st day we could not get hot water in the Shower. For the money I paid I also expected a mini bar and ironing board in the room. These were not provided. The residents were all either families with young children or older retired people. We cam e back one evening at 11.30 to have a drink in the bar area, to find it was all locked up and noone around. I wouldnt stay here again. Though I think if you were lucky enough to get a room looking over the sea on the 1st floor this would have been a lot better. They wanted me to pay an extra £80 for this previlege!

I have known this hotel for well over fifty years. It has always had an excellent reputation. Location is perfect. Staff are very friendly. Services are good. Room was very comfortable and beds were fine. Toilet and bath/shower facilities were not up to scratch to say the least. No ventilation and no hand held shower unit. Not acceptable in this day and age especially in a 4* hotel.

We had a last minute booking due to another hotel booking not working out and the Carlton was very accomodating, we were upgraded to a family room which was massive and beautiful with a sea view. The staff were very friendly and check in was quick and easy.

The Garden Room was cold the heating was poor my Wife and I had to request extra heater and blankets, the bed was not very comforable. We were glad that only booked for a weekend. The Menzies Carlton bosting 4 Star, in our opinion, did not give us that impression. Paying £122 per night was not value for money, as a good will gester on the Hotels part to compenstate my Wife and I for uncomfortable stay. It was My Wifes 70th Birthday.

Relaxed atmosphere and helpful staff. Excellent location and ample car park. Looking tired with furniture in the bedroom fraying. Many hotels manage to keep the old world charm while giving the place a modern facelift and updating the facilities.

Having stayed at The Carlton on a previous occasion we decided it would be suitable to spend an Anniversary Weekend. The view from the room was appalling - looking into a wall and roof area. The Receptionist was in no way interested in us at all. we found the Restaurant Staff most helpful and considerate. Our overall impression was that The Carlton looked tired. We were disappointed generally.
