On arrival I asked whether any of the rooms had firmer beds because I'd read reviews about them being uncomfortable. This request seemed way beyond the man at reception, he looked confused and mumbled, "They're all the same." If you don't have a back problem before you stay at Merlewood, you can guarantee you'll be leaving with one! The mattress wasn't just soft, it was ready for the dump. The duvan bed was bumpy, saggy and totally knackered!
It's true that Wi-Fi is free, but you can only get it if you sit next to the router in Reception.
Admittedly we booked a cheap rate through booking.com, so we weren't expecting luxury, but it's pretty poor not to make up the room at all for a 3 night stay. (Unless you count emptying the bin and replacing the coffee cups... clean glasses, spoons, towels, etc must not have been included in our rate).
The room looked clean on the surface, but we found dirty socks on the floor near the foot of the bed as we were packing to leave. Might be a good idea to suggest to the cleaner to hoover under the bed perhaps?!
It's such a shame because this hotel could be lovely if someone was caring for it properly.
We stayed here for 3 nights in June 2015. The pool was lovely and the views of the beach and harbour from the bar were great. After that this hotel is letting itself down - such a shame!
