Score from 217 reviews Very good
In the centre of the small, charming town of Rye, the Ship is a modern take on the traditional English inn - a cosy pub, rich in original character, with simple, comfortable en suite rooms above.
Score from 108 reviews Fabulous
From the moment we arrived until the moment we departed the service was amazing the staff at the Mermaid couldn't do enough for us. The food was fantastic, the Restaurant Staff very attentive but not invasive, I felt more a part of the family than a paying Guest, the rooms are cleaned everyday and fresh towels every morning, I for one will be returning as soon as possible. You really must stay here and experience The Mermaid Inn simply can't put into words how fantastic it is, better than anywhere I have ever stayed including five star hotels. Full of historic features step back in time to Elizabeth I if you love your history than its a must stay and if you don't it is still a must stay go and experience The Mermaid Inn for yourself you wont be disappointed!
There is nothing to find fault with!
The Mermaid Inn is an amazing hotel to stay in steeped in history and character. The staff are very friendly and welcoming the food is excellent. We have visited the hotel before but never had the pleasure of staying this will not be our last visit we will return and stay again we would recommend a stay to anyone.
attitude of all staff
the house, its decoration, its medieval ambience and legacy the restaurant
the proximity of a single room with the room next door (could hear the neighbourgh snore)
We loved the history - feeling that the Inn had been there for so many years, and had seen so many changes and interesting people within its walls. I have wanted to spend a night there for years, and was not disappointed. Our room was old, full of character and attractive. All the public rooms were warm and cosy. Just loved it.
Some of the staff seemed a bit young and inexperienced - one example: our breakfast waiter seemed shy and unforthcoming, and I finished up with one meat sausage and one vegetarian, having enquired if they had a vegetarian sausage. One would have thought that he could have assumed/doublechecked if I wanted one of each, or if my enquiry was because I was a vegetarian !!! Little inadequacies like that do leave an impression. He was just too young and inexperienced to handle any situation other than delivering the food.
The Hotel was everything that we had hoped for. Steeped in History with wonderful décor great rooms good outside space for a drink and parking which is a real bonus
We stayed in room 23 which was right at the top not ideal if you cannot climb stairs. The room was small but comfortable with great features however it was so hot even with the window open and the fan on we did not sleep well would recommend to stay in the rooms below.
Lots of antiques and pictures on display, creepy corridors and old dark wood heavy doors. I liked the contrast between the old fashioned style and decor of the bedroom and the modern bathroom with a proper bath. It's not the sort of place I would usually stay in but it was an interesting experience.
Slightly dusty with a few cobwebs but not a real problem, it's a very old building.
The staff, the atmosphere, the history and charm of the venue and the breakfast was pretty good!
Atmospheric old tavern.
excellent staff service food parking (but double parking often)
no bath limited menu
Absolutely everything. I enjoyed all aspects for this great Inn.
My trip wasn't long enough!
Friendly staff. Historic setting. Good food.
A bit expensive
The atmosphere and the character of the building.
Being an old building the en suite had reduced the size of the room and the lack of a shower curtain meant that the shower was only usable as a foot spa without flooding the room.
Beautiful room, friendly staff, excellent breakfast. All in Rye's most picturesque street.
The historic feel of the place The high-quality cuisine The comfortable lounges
Poor parking facilities. It was a pain manouvering the car in and out.
The history and the bar.
The food in the main restaurant
Central location, quirky and historic building.Cleanliness of room and daily towel changes.Good food
Rubbish access to car park, ability to park ,no guarantee of getting a spot after a day out even though we were resident...indifferent attitude of staff on this point. Noise from accommodation in room above all night ...the slightest movement or talking resulted in waking us (our room was 35) We found staff generally adequate but not friendly. The car park seemed to be a source entertainment to people in the bar as most guests found this painfull process highly irritating as the cost for our stay was top end for B & B
I left my jumper and the staff posted it to me.
No shower in my attic room - also room very hot.
Atmosphere, quirky aspects, Elizabethan at its best, creaky floors and the history behind it. Great!!!
Mermaid street is a steep hill and while we were ok, it could be difficult to get to if disabled or elderly.
Welcoming, friendly and good value.
Character Setting Food & drink friendly staff
Character, Historic Location, GREAT breakfasts and excellent dinner.
beautiful location, staff friendly and helpful, hotel fabulous lovely setting breakfast lovely most importantly for my wife this birthday present achieved an adult dream of hers enough said.
couldnt really park comfortably space at a premium parked in car park across the road fiver for 24 hours worth every penny but to be fair this is just a minor detail for what was otherwise a fabulous stay
Non working TV, bed to hard, food good but overpriced. Stayed here 42 years ago for our honeymoon was most enjoyable then and no where near as expensive.
The hotel itself was lovely and so old and quaint. The food was great. We did not have lunch. But it looked nice.
Not enough bar staff. So guest wait ages to be served like the tourist and locals coming into the bar. Did not get shown around the hotel or to our room. And for £200 a night I think that is not good. Did not get shown the other sitting room ( lounges)
