In the centre of the small, charming town of Rye, the Ship is a modern take on the traditional English inn - a cosy pub, rich in original character, with simple, comfortable en suite rooms above.

Wonderful character as an ancient smugglers' tavern; cozy and bright; friendly staff; beautiful decor; the feeling of stepping back centuries.
Overall we enjoyed the hotel, the room was comfortable and clean. Staff were also helpfull and polite.
Breakfast, firstly when the breakfast arrived I requested some mustard, unfortunately it never arrived until I had nearly finished my meal, also for the hotel rating I thought it would be a freshly cooked breakfast, but as the breakfast came so fast it must have been pre-cooked as it would be impossible for it to have been cooked within the 5 minutes of ordering.
Wonderfully creaky and old; great bar; good food
Rather thin walls, so noisy at times
sevice and food excellent
on suite very poor, no proper shower, poor water pressure
I like anything in this beautiful old Inn.
Staff were all incredibly helpful and pleasant. The inn itself is a fascinating piece of history.
Kitchen smells in some of the upstairs areas. Slightly overheated and stuffy on the whole for our personal tastes, but may suit others.
everything from the moment i entered the mermaid.till i left...amazeing...
Everything except the bed. Staff helpful and friendly , nothing to much trouble for them. Food excellent as was the service. Will definitely visit again.
The bed was not long enough but was told the day of departure that we could have requested a divan style bed which we will do when we return in April/May. Would have liked a larger shower but adequate.
The building was amazing. A genuine 14th century building. The best building I have ever stayed in.
The food wasn t great and the attention to detail was lacking for the price.
Relaxed , friendly , warm Atmosphere... With Quaint charm , Love this place
Booking with booking.com be careful because, the type of room I thought I'd booked , ( seeing the pictures on the site - small print at the bottom) wasn't the type of room we got , I was lucky it was possible to be upgraded, would have been disappointed if upgrade wouldn't have been possible .... " kingsmill " is the room to choose
History, facilities and staff. Beer.
A little noisy.
the creaking floorboards, leaning walls, open fireplace, the beams, the history...everything!
The satisfaction of countless travellers gives this inn an atmosphere of contentment.
Nothing worth mentioning.
Lovely old building. Great location. Private parking. Helpful staff. Very clean.
Nothing. Just be aware that the building is 600 years old, so built when people were not as tall as they are now. This means that if you are tall you need to take care or you'll bump your head.
The beautifully historic building, great bar and wonderful restaurant. The staff are very friendly and helpful. And a wonderful setting in Rye
The beds are a bit used so you just fall together like your in an upturned leaf. As the building is so old there are a lack of plug sockets in the room for phones etc, but a small price to pay for a historic hotel.
The beds were heavenly and I am going to find out about the mattresses in no.2 bedroom. the dinner was also good - we had roast beef to share and I had a delicious pudding.
There werent many places to hang our coats. We did so enjoy our stay and Rye is so interesting
Central location, lovely olde worlde feel to the place with modern touches. Very good restaurant with reasonably priced wines. Very helpful staff.
The room we had had spotlights overhead and this made the whole room very warm, great for the winter but we were experiencing the hottest October ever!!
Loved it - what a fabulous place to stay! The staff are helpful, kind and seem to really enjoy working there (which is always a good sign!) My room was quiet and comfortable, with a beautiful view of Mermaid street outside. Curling up with a good book and a gin and tonic in front of the fire in the evening made my visit even more enjoyable.
None of the following points were a negative for me, but worth pointing out to other guests for whom it may be a concern; this is an old inn. The floor boards creak, the doorways are low and the stair cases can be tricky. Do let the staff know if you have concerns re mobility and noise as there are a range of rooms to choose from. The bathrooms can be small and the drainage not brilliant but all these things give the inn the character that makes it special.
The inn is steeped in history, big wow as soon as you step in the door. Many famous faces have graced the Mermaid throughout hundreds of years.
Due to age, and possibly the fact that so may people from around the world wish to stay, soundproofing etc standards have stayed in yesteryear. It was so hard to get to sleep with endless creaking and noise from pipes (I had asked for a quiet room) I virtually gave up. No point staying a beautiful setting if it ruins your following day due to exhaustion
The whole atmosphere of the hotel and it's location, together with the efficient staff.
olde world charm
food fumes from extract vent from kitchen below, avoid room 20 if possible because although its got a four poster bed it is also a fire escape route in case of fire?
Restaurant: ambience and quality of food still very good
We arrived before 2.00 pm and were told by reception in cold 'civil service manner we could not check in yet. No attempt to check if our room was ready, no offer to store luggage, just 'come back after 2.00'. In the room: main lighting by halogen downlighters - three did not work Only one bedside table. Woken up a little before 6.00 am by loudly chatting staff noisily louding laundry bags into a van.
If you like hotels with bags of character & history you'll love this.
Arriving at the mermaid hotel was like stepping back in time. but with all modern facilities. The staff couldn't do enough and it was a sheer joy to stay there. We were only there for one night, and so only had the breakfast. But that was brilliant!
Nothing really. The sloping floors and low ceiling in places only added to the charm of the inn.
