The Mermaid is full of history and having eaten there before we felt compelled to stay in this occasion. It's a charming hotel in one of Sussex's most historic towns. A nice change from the norm.
The rooms & hallways are a tad creaky, so some complimentary ear plugs might be good for light sleepers. But it didn't bother me personally.
Our room was delightful Staff very friendly and helpful
Disappointed with the breakfast
Beautiful building with wonderful interesting décor, a pleasure to stay there
We had an evening meal in the restaurant and in my opinion the food was not of a good standard. I had soufflé that was overcooked , but tasty, the dover sole was also overcooked almost rubbery and the broccoli and new potatoes were soggy. The dessert was good. My wife's vegetarian main course was good and tasty
the history the Mermaid and the fantastic varied architecture in Rye
television froze every few seconds could not view my favourite programmes complained 3 times it was not sorted out in the time I was there and as I was on my own it was the only company I had,no comfortable chair in room as room too small
Lovely old Inn with loads of history. In the centre of town but free parking for residents. Staff friendly
Breakfast v poor. Toast cold and hard. Bacon greasy and undercooked, waffles crispy and overcooked. Request for more milk/butter ignored. Plates pushed onto table without removing old ones. Waiter insisted on talking order whilst I was trying to eat cereal. Very cramped breakfast room.
Location was excellent. Our room was lovely and very quiet.
Our breakfast on the first 2 mornings was excellent but unfortunately the chef must have changed because our remaining 3 breakfasts were disappointing by comparison.
Breakfast was great, staff were lovely and so convenient for visiting other places.
The shower did not work properly ...the bed was just a mattress on a base with no headboard so pillows were against the wall and there was no board at the bottom so sheets fell off. What was supposed to be a diver was like a slightly padded sheet....very disappointing.
I loved the beautiful single four poster bed! I had a lovely view. The small pub is delightful as is the coffee room which is tiny but cosy with a roaring fire. This is an idyllic winter getaway.
the hotels quirkiness and character
The service wasnt great. Need more staff. breakfast was a bit of a shambles.
The building, the food and the friendly staff. A very relaxing place to stay.
The bathroom needs updating. You can hear people in the other rooms......walls a bit thin for an old building.
The ambience of the hotel, its history and traditions were amazing and the staff did all they could to make our stay enjoyable. We had a very enjoyable evening meal which was good value for money.
Unfortunately we lost hot water in our room, however the staff were brilliant and did all they could to ensure our night was not ruined ..... thank you!!
Fantastic location and good food
service at breakfast was hit and miss. We and other guests had to go and find the waiters to get served.
Friendly staff, good food, fast room service at famous historic smugglers/literary destination.
An ironic one. Ye olde metal inn sign outside bedroom window creaked, groaned and squeaked all night making sleep near impossible. Fine for ye old smugglers of yore...not so 4 ye businessperson of now!
Location great as was the room, food and the staff.
Nothing to dislike.
Really great hotel and VERY quirkey!
Rye is beautiful and especially Mermaid Street. This ancient hotel is one of the most beautiful buildings on Mermaid Street. Our room was really sweet and wooden beamed and warm and clean. There are many cosy warm reception rooms downstairs all with real fires which seemed to bring out a special sociability in the guests so we joined some other guests in their newspaper quiz in the early evening. We were totally relaxed during our whole time there and really enjoyed the evening meal in the dining room too.
Our room overlooked the car park and many car alarms went off during the night. Couldn't get wifi in the bedroom and reception didn't help too much so gave up trying and went to a reception room to work. They had nowhere to put muddy hiking boots which surprised me as there are great walking possibilities all around and I felt worried having to find somewhere to put them in the room without trailing mud everywhere.
Very friendly and accommodating staff
Location, log fires, cosy nooks to have a pre dinner drink, excellent dinner
Bathroom was freezing cold, public bar too busy to get a drink, facilities in room not worth £150.
There's nothing to dislike.
Cosy, warm and welcoming. Lovely resident lounges. Beautiful town, full of history Lovely Christmas decorations Staff very accommodating especially Little Sean!
Christmas lights not working in Rye! Saturday night menu pricey and no alternative Parking rather dodgy I didn't see a ghost!!
Room no 6 heating was mediocre and also had to wait a while for hot water to reach the room
Wonderful character as an ancient smugglers' tavern; cozy and bright; friendly staff; beautiful decor; the feeling of stepping back centuries.
Overall we enjoyed the hotel, the room was comfortable and clean. Staff were also helpfull and polite.
Breakfast, firstly when the breakfast arrived I requested some mustard, unfortunately it never arrived until I had nearly finished my meal, also for the hotel rating I thought it would be a freshly cooked breakfast, but as the breakfast came so fast it must have been pre-cooked as it would be impossible for it to have been cooked within the 5 minutes of ordering.
Wonderfully creaky and old; great bar; good food
Rather thin walls, so noisy at times
