This mid-18th century former inn offers unique rooms, free Wi-Fi, and excellent views of Rye. Good food is served in the restaurant.

Score from 214 reviews Very good
In the centre of the small, charming town of Rye, the Ship is a modern take on the traditional English inn - a cosy pub, rich in original character, with simple, comfortable en suite rooms above.
Score from 111 reviews Fabulous
This luxury, stylish hideaway is located in the centre of Rye and offers elegant, well-designed rooms, local wines and a restaurant menu infused with Mediterranean zest.
Score from 129 reviews Fabulous
Lots of antiques and pictures on display, creepy corridors and old dark wood heavy doors. I liked the contrast between the old fashioned style and decor of the bedroom and the modern bathroom with a proper bath. It's not the sort of place I would usually stay in but it was an interesting experience.
Slightly dusty with a few cobwebs but not a real problem, it's a very old building.
The staff, the atmosphere, the history and charm of the venue and the breakfast was pretty good!
Atmospheric old tavern.
excellent staff service food parking (but double parking often)
no bath limited menu
Absolutely everything. I enjoyed all aspects for this great Inn.
My trip wasn't long enough!
Friendly staff. Historic setting. Good food.
A bit expensive
The atmosphere and the character of the building.
Being an old building the en suite had reduced the size of the room and the lack of a shower curtain meant that the shower was only usable as a foot spa without flooding the room.
Beautiful room, friendly staff, excellent breakfast. All in Rye's most picturesque street.
The historic feel of the place The high-quality cuisine The comfortable lounges
Poor parking facilities. It was a pain manouvering the car in and out.
The history and the bar.
The food in the main restaurant
Central location, quirky and historic building.Cleanliness of room and daily towel changes.Good food
Rubbish access to car park, ability to park ,no guarantee of getting a spot after a day out even though we were resident...indifferent attitude of staff on this point. Noise from accommodation in room above all night ...the slightest movement or talking resulted in waking us (our room was 35) We found staff generally adequate but not friendly. The car park seemed to be a source entertainment to people in the bar as most guests found this painfull process highly irritating as the cost for our stay was top end for B & B
Atmosphere, quirky aspects, Elizabethan at its best, creaky floors and the history behind it. Great!!!
Mermaid street is a steep hill and while we were ok, it could be difficult to get to if disabled or elderly.
Welcoming, friendly and good value.
Character Setting Food & drink friendly staff
Character, Historic Location, GREAT breakfasts and excellent dinner.
beautiful location, staff friendly and helpful, hotel fabulous lovely setting breakfast lovely most importantly for my wife this birthday present achieved an adult dream of hers enough said.
couldnt really park comfortably space at a premium parked in car park across the road fiver for 24 hours worth every penny but to be fair this is just a minor detail for what was otherwise a fabulous stay
Non working TV, bed to hard, food good but overpriced. Stayed here 42 years ago for our honeymoon was most enjoyable then and no where near as expensive.
Helpful staff. Busy time but still pleasant and obliging
You can't do much about it - but the parking
The building was beautiful, the staff were polite and professional. The bed was very comfortable and being able to park at the back of the hotel was a real plus.
The building is fascinating and the location very good
We normally enjoy giving positive reviews so this poor one is a rarity. We booked a jazz supper. The starter (polenta chips?!) was appalling, and the main not much better(a minute portion of paella containing 2 mussels and 10 empty shells). We were squeezed into a table of 8 which could hardly have seated 6 comfortably. A smoker puffed on an e-cigarette every 5 minutes or so, about 18 inches away from us. If I had paid cash for the wine it would have been £23 but because I added it to my room bill they charged me an extra 10%. The breakfast looked attractive but was very greasy. We were hoping to book for Christmas but this experience has put us off that idea.
The town, the hotel, the bar and restaurant in The Mermaid, the choice of bars and restaurants apart from the hotel, the jazz festival.
The rain on the second day - but no one can guarantee that weather!
Our stay from start to finish was excellent. Gorgeous room which made you feel like you'd been transported back in time. The bar is cosy and the service excellent.
Nothing I can think of.
Great location, great history & a few amazing old features in building. Great breakfast tho.
Was good to discover the history of the place, but the whole place traded off this past History. To be charging what it did you would expect a lot more beautiful features still intact & much more comfortable surroundings. It was really overpriced for the room- which was in need of refurbishment, some decent coffee & tea facilities, an actual shower! The dining room was in need of an awful good clean too- it looked like it hadn't been vacuumed in a Long time!
Almost 600 year-old building inevitably a wow. Lovely location. Very helpful staff.
The overall quality of the cooked-breakfast was not good.
The location, setting and the public rooms were atmospheric and appealing.
The room provided although clean and well maintained was small, a so hot/stuffy that even with window fully open and the fan on continuously it was still too warm The shower room was tiny, the sink miniscule and with no window was even hotter than the bedroom. On our arrival were greeted by a noisy wedding party and a disco that went on until 12night-the hotel had made no attempt to drawer this to our attention. Parts of the public rooms were dusty and the restaurant was well below par - over salted bread rolls, soup and asparagus. Second night slow and inattentive service - we had to ask for water, condiments.... The receptionist was defensive when these matters were pointed out.
