With Norman cellars dating back to the 12th century and secret passageways in some of its rooms, this inn offers historic accommodation in Rye. It has a huge open log fireplace in the bar, and an award-winning restaurant. Rebuilt in 1420, The Mermaid Inn has been visited by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother and Prince Edward, as well as celebrities and artists. It retains many beautiful, traditional features, including an old priest hole and a secret stairway hidden behind a bookcase. The restaurant has been awarded an AA Rosette for its fine French and British cuisine. The lounge bar was once frequented by local smugglers, and has a large wooden beam supported by stone pillars. Each room at The Mermaid has charming features, like wooden paneling or carved beds. Rooms all feature a TV and en suite bathroom, and some have picturesque views over Rye. The old world ambience and friendliness of the staff. The food was also excellent. A little bit pricey, but then again I suppose you pay for the location and old world charm of an old Inn with character.

I loved a hotel full of history and soul. It's the genuine article. Nothing fake. It has history and stories and tales running through every crack of its plaster and knot in its wood beams. Just lovely. Nothing not to like.

Period building. Good bar. Attractive external floral planting. Restaurant - bland food and pretentious menu - poorly executed. Breakfast coffee just horrible. Complaints were ignored.

Ambience, wonderful historic building, great location. Drinks prices are absurdly high - especially spirits. Bed very soft and lumpy.

The atmosphere was great, very warm and cosy. We were there during a cold spell and the smell of wood burning fires throughout was wonderful. Reception staff very helpful and attentive. Restaurant ran out of haddock for breakfast on Good Friday. Breakfast staff in restaurant could have been more "cheerful"

The overall layout and age of the property. The convenience to Rye High Street and local restaurants. My wife liked the breakfast. I especially liked the coffee. The Wi-Fi was terrible unless you were in the reception area. The shower attachment was loose. The kettle would only work if you held the top down.

Four poster bed Individually cooked breakfast. Lovely surroundings. Excellent staff Coming from the north I did not like the drinks prices which were almost double what I pay in my local. Whole experience a little expensive for me.

Excellent staff ! Lovely location & very quiet at night. Central heating controls worked perfectly in Room 30. Fish Pie Saturday night was a complete misnomer ! Not a pie but grilled fish pieces ok , but with langoustine/prawn shells etc all inedible. Separate mashed potato. Very poor. Would recommend on basis of checking all food first.
