Situated in the centre of Cambridge, with valet parking near the edge of the River Cam, The Varsity Hotel and Spa offers modern rooms, and an impressive rooftop terrace with uninterrupted views.
Score from 464 reviews Very good
My upgrade to a Junior suite after complaining last time I was there. Breakfast is great Facilities such as gym and sauna are a massive bonus. These don't exist at other local hotels.
Wifi is not free. Hotel rooms still don't feel like 5 star. A 4 star competitor has better rooms.
Beyond dull hotel on a great location. The breakfast was absolutely horrible in particular, the pool over chlorinated and it really is s bland experience. The location is first class.
Friendly staff, good service, you can enjoy beautiful river view when having breakfast!
location great, efficient checkin, nice room, clean and comfortable, good pool facilities and gym! good choice of breakfast..full English, hams, cheese, salmon, fruit yogurt, melon wedges, pastries as well as the usual cereals and no rush to check out as its not till noon! good service and a lovely lady playing piano in the lounge as we had our coffee was a nice touch! staff polite and accommodating to our needs.
everyone knows not to touch minibar but I accidently moved the wine on a tray as I thought the bottled water on it was complimentary then saw a small label stating movement would automatically charge the items, however we went to reception and they deducted them from the bill without any fuss! this is not a cheap hotel so it was disappointing not to hav complimentary bottled water altho a tea/coffee tray was provided! the tap water seemed to come out warm however we placed the tap but in the morning we managed to get it to run cold enough for toothbrushing! the only mirror in the room was at the back of the minibar shelving so no good for putting on makeup and not well placed at all for using the hairdryer a nightmare for hair straightening! its hard to find fault with this hotel.
Location Biscuit on arrival Breakfast. Nice staff especially girls serving at breakfast.
One room had no cold water in any taps! Booking through Booking.com got very muddled with problems when I rang hotel to confirm rooms. Snag on bedroom door made a hole in my lovely cashmeer cardigan I had saved up for, for two years!! Paying for almost £80 for parking on top of spending over £800 for 4 rooms is totally outrageous!!! Bills stuck under our bedroom door when we had said one person would pay for all 4 rooms booked.
Very central. Lovely room. The concierge really helped us when my partner left his watch at a cafe. He called them for us to check and them arranged for a taxi to take us there on the way to the train station.
Very bad wifi and you pay a lot for it too which makes it even worse. The cooked breakfast was lukewarm by the time it was at our door.
WIFI should be free
We were upgraded to a executive room
If you buy breakfast in advance there is a discount of £4.00 Reception failed to inform this and we had to pay full £16.00 for breakfast.
The location and view from the room
Being charged £19.50 a night parking Am disabled and never been charged at a hotel before
Proximity to the University, really spacious room, nice & quiet.
I loved this place from start to finish. I was here to treat my girlfriend on her birthday. I asked for a room with a view, overlooking canal if possible which they did at no extra cost plus a plate of strawberries covered in chocolate, a jar of nuts, a jaw of sweets and a note wishing her a happy birthday. I thought this was a lovely touch and certainly made me get browny points with my girlfriend ;-)
Waiting time to check in was a bit painful but I'm sure we were just unlucky with timing.
Relaxing after a busy Christmas.
The service for our evening meal was excellent and I think everyone enjoyed the food. It was good to have a room to ourselves as they weren't relatives to fit in. And it allowed space for the younger children to move around a bit without bothering other residents. The breakfast was excellent too.
The room was too hot although I'm sure that could have been dealt with has we not been in a room with our children and we didn't want to disturb them by fiddling about with air-con or radiators.
Everything, warm welcome on arrival including warm cookies, reasonably priced parking, lovely room overlooking the river, really spacious, modern and clean with everything you could wish for, Wi-Fi, TV, Alarm Clock Radio, plenty of tea/coffee and toiletries, really other hotels should learn from them.
Location, view from room, staff.
Car parking charges, paid wi-fi, breakfast uninspired, too many things in the room not working and general lacklustre decor.
The hotel is right next to the River Cam. Our family had a punt tour along the River Cam definitely recommend that...this was followed by a warm Mead and Mulled Cider at The Mill Pub just a few minutes from the hotel. The room was clean and tidy and the staff were courteous and helpful.
We stayed during the Christmas/New Year...I booked this hotel as it had leisure facilities unfortunatelt the Leisure centre did not open until 10.00am so I could not use the gym until after breakfast. The bar and restaurant are extremely expensive...£7.20 for two soft drinks at the bar.
The greeting by the concierge was slightly uncomfortable and sexist. I said i was happy to carry our own bags out of the car. He ignored what i said and put his hand on my bag and looked at my male companion and asked him instead! We both thought this was wrong behaviour.I had to be quite firm and repeat that we were happy to carry our own bags! Later that night I had a card put through my door which addressed me as Mr instead of Ms. The staff need to be trained up to avoid these issues occuring again.
Location great. Restaurant ok but pricey. Staff professional.
Choice of music last two times we stayed here drove us out. Loud electronic hip- hop chosen to make one eat faster. Completely unsuitable. £20 for breakfast is a joke. £20 for parking is extortion. Bathroom smelled badly. Little choice in Cambridge so they can rip people off with impunity. Three restaurant staff were excellent though.
The room, very spacious, while not a view from the window we looked out on the field and the back of the Fitzwiliam. It was nice to be offered actual soap, not just the liquid kind. We enjoyed having the set afternoon tea.
The parking arrangment - our guests at the tea were allowed free parking, yet as residents we were expected to pay heavily to park overnight. In the event we left our car with the family, not an ideal way of doing it.
Very close to shops Warm cookie on arrival
Having to pay for parking on top. £19.50 is a lot compared to other cities.
Location, food, room, comfort - overall stay excellent
On arRival reception staff unsure of Pricing and on exit incorrect bill issued - charged for items not used in minibar - Bill was however amended - minor issue overall stay excellent
The breakfast was good, staff attentive
The windows in the bedroom were covered in black mould -obviously not cleaned recently. It was Christmas but the decorations were very low key -just a small tree in the large dining room, however there were pictures of Marco Pierre White everywhere. Christmas decorations would have been much preferable to the shrine to MPW, really off-putting.
Great location. Staff very helpful . Breakfast was hearty. Rooms comfy will minitially bar.
The marco pierre white obsession . His food was just about passable. The bar was under manned.
Elegant hotel in the heart of Cambridge, very quiet and clean. Rooms are beautiful and well equipped. Helpful and kind staff.
