Durham could definitely be one of those towns that appear in fairy tales and stories of kings and knights. Lying on a hilled peninsula formed by the Wear River, the striking cathedral overlooks from the hilltop, surrounded by the castle, palaces and historic buildings. Get transported back in time by the magic of this English jewel, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Though archaeological evidence suggests the area has been inhabited since 2000 BC, the present-day settlement was founded by monks from Lindisfarne in 995, choosing the area as the final resting place of Saint Cuthbert. Symeon of Durham stated once that ‘to see Durham is to see the English Zion, and by doing so one may save oneself a trip to Jerusalem’. Hotels and B&Bs in Durham’s historic centre are a popular choice to enjoy this historic legacy.
Its powerful religious position granted such great honour to the city, that the bishop still holds the rights to a seat in the House of Lords, and to accompany the sovereign at the coronation. During the 19th century and encompassing the industrial revolution, the university was founded, with Durham Castle becoming its first college.

I loved Durham. I did a tour of the Cathedral and Castle. I felt very safe being on my own and people I did speak to were very chatty.
It was very peaceful walking along the river.
There did seem to be an awful lot of Church's,
I attended the Easter Service at the Cathedral, it was lovely. The choir had 30 children and 11 adults in it. The volunteers were very good.
I would like to come again soon.
I stayed at the Kingslodge Inn, and ate there and at an Indian Restaurant Alishan. The food was delicious.

Durham Cathedral is a must, of all the cathedrals i have visited this must rate as the highest. It was warm, packed with history and information. Great shop, cafe and clean toilets.
Durham guided tour of the Castle is also very good, just be aware to do either or both, its going up quite a steep climb.
You must take the time to visit the living museum at Beamish, although be prepared to allow two days or at least a day and a half. There is so much to see, and the interaction with the characters on the site is fantastic and so informative. Enjoy the vintage tram and bus rides and dont miss out on puffing Billy.
FInally make sure you see the Bowes Museum, it will probably take you 3-4 hours but its worth it.

Beautiful walks and historic building.
Beautiful walks and historic building.
Worth doing a city waking tour and then a tour of the castle and also one of the cathedral.
Got so much from each of these . Had lovely Sunday lunch in ‘Townhouse, cake in the ‘Riverview Kitchen’ but breakfasts looked amazing.
We chose this hotel as it had free parking and was within walking distance of Durham City Centre (about 10 minutes). The hotel is surrounded by greenery so did not feel like it was in a city centre. The staff were very pleasant and friendly. We ate breakfast and had two evening meals in the restaurant which were all good. Our room was overlooking the garden and was very clean. The cleaning staff did not service our room during our stay due to Covid restrictions but asked us every morning whether we required anything in the room replenishing.
We needed a hotel to go to a funeral and stop over for a couple of extra days to be with the family.
the location of the hotel is great with it being close to the city centre.
We didn't choose a river view but the view from the rear was equally as good and the main northern rail line wasn't a problem as all trains were going slow due to Durham station being very close.
We've stayed at several hotels in the area and the Raddisson is probbaly the best there. It's far enough away from the night life for it not to be intrusive.
I love this hotel and have stayed here many times whilst visiting my student son at Durham University. The rooms are great - filled with university memorabilia - each one is totally different. They are also very clean. Breakfast is excellent with very wide choice from a buffet or ordered from the kitchen. The round bar is fun to sit in. All staff are very friendly and carry out their jobs with good attention to detail. This is a proper hotel which knows how to look after its guests and has well trained staff.
The staff were excellent, and couldn't do more for us, nothing was too much trouble.
The room was very nicely decorated with a comfortable bed and a great shower.
The hotel is very close to Durham City Centre, with it only being a 10-minute drive.
The on-site restaurant has some delicious food available with our personal recommendations being the garlic mushrooms, mince on mash, lasagne, lamb koftas.and Chinese chicken sizzlers.
The breakfast was also very nice and filling
Very welcoming at reception, found room to be clean, spacious and double bed very comfortable. Main road runs past our room and we didn't have any noise disturbance and had a great nights sleep. I enjoy leaving the car at home and this hotel is on a bus route between Durham and Bishop Auckland. The X21 bus goes through Durham to Chester le Street and Newcastle. Would have liked to dine at the adjoining Indian Restaurant but didn't get the opportunity on this occasion.
We enjoyed an amazing stay at the Marriott Hotel in Durham. The hotel is worthy of its high reputation, and we could not fault anything during our stay. The weekday staff were most welcoming, and housekeeping staff very obliging. Having a bar fridge in the bedroom was extremely helpful, and we were fortunate in having a marvelous view over the river. The location was exceptional, being a short walk from the centre of the town and the Cathedral. Thankyou.
We booked as we were getting married in Durham City Centre and wanted additional space to get ready.
The apartment was everything we needed and more.
Central location, parking space, comfy beds and stylish space. Great outdoor area.
James was amazing and provided an amazing hamper and was so accomodating with the make up, hair and photographer attending during the day-arranging that they could park in the car park.
I liked the young, warm, and friendly staff. My room was very comfortable; also, I ate most of my meals here and they were good. Durham, was a bit overwhelming for my first time, but members of the staff helped me get oriented so that I could walk to the train station and the cathedral. Both were easy enough to get to for anyone who is used to walking a bit. I would recommend this place.
The hotel was fine for a one night stay - the room was very clean if not particularly big (I think we were told that we had been upgraded). The location is great - very close to the city centre/river/cathedral - and we were able to park on the road outside for £1.60 (normally more but no charges until Monday after 6pm on Saturday). The staff were very friendly.
Loved the location, and the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful especially the manageress local lass say no more ,short walk into the city centre, taxi ride back all uphill !!!but if your young and fit ideal loction ,plenty of onsite parking, and ideal location for access to Durham and the surrounding areas. Breakfast was really good.
Great value, food & drink were good prices, the atmosphere was great. Richie the manager was so welcoming & a big thank you to Claire who looked after us all weekend, nothing was too much trouble for her, really friendly, king room was great, close to Durham city centre. The singer on Saturday night was so good. Can't wait to go back.
A delightful stay at 40 winks which far exceeded our expectations. It is a quirky refurbished terrace looking out over the Cathedral. The views are wonderful! We loved the size of the room and large separate ensuite. The cathedral and old town were very accessible from the hotel and breakfast was very good.
Both me and my daughter were very impressed with the Hotel. The staff were friendly and accommodating and we were given drink vouchers as our room wasn't ready on time, which we appreciated. Our room was amazing with so much space and the breakfast was exceptional. Would go back for sure.
Beautiful hotel located within walking distance of everything. Staff were wonderful, took care of securing taxi for next day and provided recommendations for GF restaurants. Breakfast was perfect. We stayed in twin room on first floor - lovely room and spacious Would definitely recommend!
The location of the property was great for access to the city. The hotel itself was a little tired but benefit from all the facilities needed for a good stay.. the staff were great friendly and helpful
