Set in a charming Devon longhouse dating back to the 13th century, this inn is located between Dartmoor’s Okehampton and Tavistock in the hamlet of Lake.
Score from 104 reviews Superb
Staff and location. Quiet room and no light pollution.Food.
Premier rooms still in process of upgrading. However public areas have been much improved.
Nice location, but isolated. (isolation only became a downside for evening meal) Lovely gardens. Comfortable room. Phone call from the hotel prior to arrival to ask if we were part of the wedding party. Nice quiet room allocated since we were not.
Restuarant menu is restricted to Table d'hote at £28.95 with no leeway for less than 3 courses. Bar menu is quite restrictive. Hence the reason for stating good for one night only. The hotel is clearly geared for weddings and seem to do that very well, but for other visitors, not so good. Room was very cold in the late afternoon and evening. Parking for residents very didfficult if large wedding party is in. Michael jackson 'Killer' played slightly too loudly at breakfast. Hardly appropriate in my opinion.
Location was good and gardens lovely but couldn't really use them as a wedding was taking place. Bedrooms were comfortable.
Due to a wedding and reception the hotel seemed packed and overly busy and it was very noisy until well after midnight due to disco and guests walking around and in front of hotel. We needed to have breakfast at 0800 to be away for 0830 and they weren't really ready until about 0815.
Excellent welcome, food, comfort, location, friendliness of staff - all in all a great stay, helped by exceptional September weather. There were 2 weddings taking place whilst we were there but this did not impact on our stay at all.
We experienced difficulties in booking via the hotel. The website prices did not match the price offered over the phone so we were advised to book online for our third night (Sunday) to secure the discount. Would prefer a more personal service, especially as this hotel does not appear to be part of a chain.
Great setting, great food and good atmosphere.
Nothing, all good.
Location good staff good Even slight problem was sorted out immediately
situation on Dartmoor and the excellent well looked after gardens. Breakfasts were tasty.
Noisy people in other rooms and corridors. we were unfortunate to be at the hotel when two wedding receptions were held one evening after another.
Location was excellent gardens were beautiful, room very comfortable staff welcoming overall a lovely break
Carpets a little thread bear but did not affect our stay.
Staff a very friendly and helpful, everything was in a spotless condition.Breakfast was the best.
It was a bit pricey for one night.
Great location just a few miles outside Plymouth and on the edge of Dartmoor.
Restaurant service could be improved
everything was lovely
Located in the national park and convenient for Plymouth. Comfortable bed in a spacious garden room. Bar food was enjoyable.
Bathroom needed updating. Service was patchy. Staff in the bar were generally excellent but at breakfast time they we're not so hot. Neither were the cooked breakfasts, which were serve yourself and left uncovered.
Staff were very polite and attentive Room very clean Booking in/checking out polite and efficient Food excellent from the bar menu.
Some noise but may have been because there was a wedding at the hotel.
Reception was friendly and I was able to book an immediate meal in the restaurant as I had a lot of work to do that evening. Staff in restaurant were also friendly and chatty.
Evening meal in the best restaurant in the SW should have been amazing; it wasn't, albeit I was in a hurry to get to work.
the standard of the hotel well kept garden inside the hotel was clean & nice location on the edge of Dartmoor
nothing to dislike
Setting, breakfast room, function room, bathroom, room size, breakfast
bed, pillows, room decor and furniture, some noise
The garden & setting.
Cold plates for a cooked breakfast.
The hotel was fantastic, lovely staff, beautiful grounds, excellent room and very good evening meal and breakfast.
Having to leave!
Location and atmosphere and food were first class We would happily stay again and recommend this hotel to our friends and business acquaintances. We have travelled extensively by the way.
spacious comfortable room with pleasant outlook
.evening menu limited and did not change during stay, in fact we had a june dated one in july
poor entrance signs
Everything we were guests at a wedding and it all went as smooth as clockwork
Nothing to dislike
Excellent location, well-kept garden. Restaurant food and service garden. Comfortable rooms.
One minor maintenance issue; door to balcony did not lock.
Friendly and helpful staff, Ami member of bar staff was smiley and delightful.
The covered english Breakfast could have been hotter! We ate at about 08.45hrs so expected it to have been hot and fresh.
Decor desperately needs updating and up grading.
