The comfortable lounge We have stayed here a few times before. On Tues 8 Nov we had booked dinner for 7pm for our party of four (Rooms 202 & 203). We arrived promptly. There were two other single diners in the restaurant. We didn't have anything to eat out of the ordinary, but it took over an hour to get our starters and main course. As my husband had to drive into Plymouth to pick someone up, we asked if the deserts could be hurried up, they were not, as a result my husband had to leave at 8.30pm and have his on his return, as a party of 12 had come in I assumed this is what caused the delay but they only came in after we had our main course. We sat through in the lounge, by the fire, for our liqueur coffees and drinks from 8.40pm until we left at 11pm. There were no other guests in the lounge and not once were our empty glasses cleared away, infact after my husband dropped our guest back in Plymouth and returned to the hotel just before midnight, the dirty glasses were still lying there. The young girl who was on bar duty was not exactly over worked.....

We have stayed at this hotel on several occasions in the past. After a lapse of several years we returned as we think that this hotel is in an ideal location, being close to Plymouth, Tavistock and Dartmoor and lies in an attractive setting. We found our room comfortable and clean, the staff were attentive and helpful. The dinner menu was very good however we did think that the vegetable choice seemed to be limited. The breakfast menu was very good. The new ownership and management appear to be committed to improve standards of decoration and maintenance that had perhaps been allowed to fall. We will certainly return as and when we holiday in the area. Our particular (ground floor) room seemed to be under staff quarters which meant that we were concious of their late and early movements.

staff very good and the food excellent. The wine was too pricey and the white wine was very poor for the price. the hotel was a bit scruffy as were the rooms and it was very cold as the heating did not come on until the evening.

We were staying at the hotel to attend a friend's wedding there. The lounge was decorated in an excellent way for the event and thoroughly well organised. The bar and table serving staff were very efficient and polite, the Manager was very impressive in that he was very visible organising the staff and orchestrating a thoroughly enjoyable event. Well done to all the staff!!!!!! It was clear that some recent redecoration had taken place but there is still more to do.

The food was very good as was the restaurant service. Reception were friendly and helpful. Location to moor and area as anticipated. Outside of building and the room had that "tired" appearance and feel. Unfortunate because location impressive. Perhaps some investment is needed.

Super location. Friendly staff and a very quiet and comfortable room. Breakfast was excelent. Interior of the hotel is immaculate. Exterior of the hotel looks shabbier each time we stay. A popular wedding venue (we had our daughter's reception there several years ago and it was excellent, and we have stayed a number of times since), so peeling, discoloured paint everywhere, overgrown flower beds and empty flower planters in front of the restaurant aren't a good image.

We were coming back from Brittany on the ferry from Roscoff in the evening and this hotel was ideal, just outside Plymouth. The rate for a single room with breakfast was excellent (£35). It was well signposted off the main road and it was quiet as it is some distance away from the road. It has lovely gardens around it and the windows in the restaurant/breakfast room look out directly onto them. Very comfortable, great location and price, excellent breakfast. A little outdated.

We regularly stay here as it is close to relatives so very convenient for us. In an excellent position on Dartmoor yet so close to the shops of Yelverton and city shopping in Plymouth is not far away. We very much like the fact the new owners are spending some money on the hotel, improving it, as it was very tired. The exterior has been painted so it looks much smarter, the drive and car park have been resurfaced. We understand the ballroom and bridal suite have also been refurbished. All good. Very welcoming and friendly staff. Only that our room and bathroom was very tired but am sure it will be refurbished in time along with the rest of the hotel.

The hotel was very nice. It was calm and quiet and the attention of the staff was exccellent. The food was very good The hotel looks tired and dated. However modernisation is taking place and the evidence is there. The shower and bathroom were poor. I burnt myself on the water and you could not achieve a comfortable temp. It was boiling or freezing. The sink cold tap was broken and the toilet flush system was.... Well.. It didnt!

I stayed as a single person (I was away on business) and the service I received at all times from every member of staff was courteous and nothing was ever too much trouble. The room was very, very pretty and spacious. I had a delicious meal in the restaurant - again being a lone woman was treated with discretion and courtesy. I would certainly recommend this hotel to other business and private users and will return! Free wi fi was a definite plus for me as a business traveller. This is a comment, not a complaint, my bedroom was so very pretty but the bathroom didn't really match and bedroom could have been slightly warmer! But this is nit picking!

A great location on the edge of Dartmoor and not in a town. Staff were clearly trying very hard, and largely doing a good job. However it was quite apparent that the hotel has recently changed hands, with loss of experienced staff.

The hotel is in an excellent position to visit Plymouth, Dartmoor and Cornwall. The location on the moors is very scenic and out of the way. The grounds / gardens are great, as is the bar and dining room. Food is excellent. The bedroom could do with a makeover and modernisation. Redecoration of the outside of the main buliding overlooking the gardens is well overdue.

Room was a decent size and hotel was situated in lovely grounds. Good breakfast and friendly staff. However, rooms were a little dated and tired looking, bathroom though generally clean was in desperate need of a refit. Overall decent value for money for the area.

Beautiful location, food was lovely and the staff were brilliant very friendly, the gentleman on reception I have to say was lovely, a very nice person to have for a first impression when you go into somewhere The only problem we had, was our room was over the toilets at reception, and baring in mind there was a large wedding party, we had a dreadful amount of door banging the whole of Saturday evening and night...next time I would not want a room in that part of the hotel.

Breakfast. On first day it was 35 minutes before we were served with our cooked breakfast, and 20 minutes before we even got toast. Bathroom looked very sad and in need of repair and updating. Fan was extremely noisy. Trouser press only stayed on for 2 minutes before it switched off.

Very nice accomodation with pleasent staff Bar snack food was very poor and not as described.our evening meal with friends was terrible ,had we been served with this food in a transport cafe we would havesent it back it was poor value and in particular the pork loin was rewarmed thin dry and an insult to the diner.virtually raw veg topped this awful meal off andwe remembered why we had said that we wouldnt eat here again from our last visit.sunday breakfast was dreadful as thi food had obviously been cooked and kept warm for ages .all hard bacon.dried eggs and inedible fried bread plus white as in only shown the toaster made it a meal not to remember.

“A warm and friendly welcome from the owners. The whole place exuded charm and comfort without ostentation. The room had every facility a traveller could need and was far superior to the 'boutique' room we stayed in on the following night. Will definitely return and spend more time exploring the area. ” Jane, Hollingworth, Hyde |
