Muckrach Lodge  

An 1860s hunting lodge, it has been converted into a country hotel. It has the potential to be very comfortable.

Heating turned off in the evenings and the hotel became very cold overnight. Not even a fire in the public room. Dinner service poor.

Very freindly & helpful staff/owners. The room we had was excellent & it is a traditional highland retreat.

There wasn't anything we didn't like, the only thing I will say is the water pressure from the shower was a bit weak!!

The owners and staff were very friendly and accommodating. The food is great and well thought out, especially if you are fan of game.

I liked everything about the Lodge but the fixed price menu tipped me over my allowance for the evening - This is offset by the relatively cheap costs of rooms.

THis is a lovely hotel. There's a warm, cosy yet elegant feel to the place and the staff worked hard to look after us in every way. Best is the food - we're foodies and have eaten in some of the world's finest retaurants, and Muckrach is right up there with them, and better in some ways because the food is more honest. There's obviously a lot of care and passion in the kitchen because every plate is beautifully presented, evey mouthful absolutely delicious. And the puddings! They are just Wow! Dinner service is relaxed and leisurely, which we like because we don't want to be rushed, we want to savour every mouthful, and we're there for the evening. Breakfast was as good as dinner - beautifully and perfectly cooked (fried eggs done on butter to abslolute perfection), with loads of choice from the buffet as well. All in all, a perfect place fro a short break.

The weather was pretty miserable, but the fires were lit and there were board games and books so we didn't really mind.

The quaintness of the property.

The price. Very expensive and breakfast not included. As you are away from larger villages it means you may have to eat in the hotel restaurant. While the food is great it is not plentiful and cost almost as much as the room.

Exellent location, very nice rooms, friendly and helpful staff, good selection of single malt whisky.

Apparent understaffing leads to unacceptable waiting times for meals. Our table was booked for 20:00, but we didn't get our main course until 22:00... The extra £8 per head for breakfast on top of what is paid for the room seems unneccessary and excessive.

This is a delightful small hotel with great food . And a real find in the Cairngorms National Park. The restaurant is relaxed and service attentive but this type of food really should not be rushed with such treats as grouse and locally picked chanterelles with summer truffles. This is food to savour and take time over. The bedroom was inviting and comfortable and the cooked breakfast large and solid. Just right to set you up for some good hill walking.

Bookings.com need to clearly show that booking via their website is for room only and does not include breakfast.

Setting was beautiful and staff friendly.

Although we as a family were made welcome, it was not a great choice for those with young children. It was very much for those seeking a quiet break and we didn't feel that impression was discouraged (ie, children were recommended to eat in a separate room from the main dining and at an earlier slot from parents). Also felt that £32 per day for breakfast was steep and we opted out. On the whole, I felt a bit over-priced for what we got. As a rural hideaway for a couple it would probably hit the mark though.
