This grand Victorian villa is now an outstanding 5-star guest house offering rich, elegant en suite rooms, free Wi-Fi and free parking, only 10 minutes’ walk from Windermere.

Surrounded by the stunning natural beauty of the Lake District, Newstead is just a 15-minute walk from Lake Windermere. Built in 1897 with traditional, local Lakeland stone, the house still boasts many beautiful original Victorian features including its splendid hall and staircase, marble fireplaces and mahogany woodwork.

Bland, soulless, contemporary design has been avoided in the decoration of the house, in favour of the elegant styles of the Arts and Crafts, Art Deco and Art Nouveau movements, recalling the splendour of Victorian times. There are 9 rooms, all individually decorated, with their own unique charm. All of the rooms have en suite showers, TVs and tea/coffee making facilities.

Guests also enjoy free use of a private leisure club with a swimming pool, which is just a few minutes’ drive away.

Hotel information

Newstead has achieved the AA Hotel Services prestigious 5-star award, as well as the VisitBritain 5-star rating for outstanding Windermere bed and breakfast accommodation, cleanliness and hospitality, placing it at the top of its class.

Set in its own grounds, with gardens to the front and generous off-street parking to the rear, the guest house is located on New Road. The Brookside, a cosy pub, is located just 3 minutes’ walk away, behind woods and a stream to the rear of the property. The villages of Windermere and Bowness are both also within easy walking distance. The villages offer a wide range of pubs, restaurants and shops.

Newstead retains its elegant Victorian lounge where guests are welcome to relax.

There is a private leisure club just a few minutes’ drive away and guests can use the excellent facilities free of charge. The club has a swimming pool, a sauna, a steam room, a whirlpool bath and a solarium, as well as squash and badminton courts. There is also a snooker table and a small bar and cafeteria.

Food & beverage

Breakfast is served between 08:30 and 09:15 at individual tables in the guest dining room.

Fruit juice, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, toast and jam with a range of fruit and cereals are available from the sideboard. After this, a full cooked traditional breakfast is served, including fried egg, hash browns, sausage, tomatoes, bacon and mushrooms. Breakfasts are prepared to order and served fresh on hot plates. Only the freshest, highest quality award-winning produce from local farms is used.

Baked beans, poached, boiled and scrambled eggs on toast topped with salmon strips may also be ordered. A cooked vegetarian breakfast is available on request.

The guest house does not allow takeaway meals on the premises.
