Score from 63 reviews Very good
Location. Quiet despite being close to the road. Breakfast was more than adequate. Room had been decorated in the not too distant past but was a little small. Grounds were attractive.
Quite a few dirty corners and junctions. Shower was slow and the rose not easily adjustable. It was a cross the corner cabin and too small even for either of us normal people.
Twin room had adequate space. Wonderful to have use of Boot Room to store bikes securely and dry washing. Good parking. Perfect location for surrounding area of Dovedale.
Would have been nice to have yoghourt provided at breakfast.
breakfast basic, shower weak
Staff friendliness and locality for visiting local areas.
The food was good and hospitality.
My bathroom was not cleaned for the duration of stay and the drain of the shower was blocked so we were basically having shower in a pool of dirty water. The beddings were not changed just made and the toilets not washed. i couldn't make a single call.phone was totally serviceless!
Bed was really comfy all slept well, felt conscious of creaking floorboards when walked,wi-fi fab
Told get there by 6pm, or no one give your keep bit off putting, self service breakfast but told you could 1sausage 1 bacon ,have one of each , worked in hotel catering for 20 years never seen this before, came over very controlling when paying high end price, our room in the attic quite few cobwebs x
The hotel is in a great location, the room were nice and clean. Friendly staff, easy parking, huge and tasty breakfast. Easy/quick check in and out.
Shower powerless and no food/restaurant in the hotel apart from the breakfast. Wifi was not usable in the room.
The hotel was 16 mile from Alton towers. We Aldo got a free breakfast when our booking said breakfast not included The bar was closed when we arrived but the owner said he would open up for a us
The breakfast was spot on but they did not do evening meals or snacks the nearst pub was 3 mile down the road
Location Cheap bar drinks
Wifi only works in reception
Easy to relax, made to feel welcome
Wifi not strong in bedroom
Location in countryside, and local to many places of interest.
No aircon...so had to have the window open, and as the hotel is right on a main single carriage rd, the rd noise was loud. Very creaky stairs, quite loud everytime somebody came up or down them. Smoking point for the bar was directly below our window...noise kept us awake. £75 per night for the standard of the hotel was overpriced (breakfast was continental with this price) and would rather stay at a travellodge. Would not expect to pay more than £60-£65 for this standard. Finished our two day stay exhausted, left early to go home to bed.
Staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was excellent. Rooms lovely and quiet. Location excellent, the tissington trail starts right at the end of their garden.
Nothing, we will definitely return the next time we are in the peak district.
friendly and breakfast very nice.room very clean
I liked the fact the guest house had the Tissington trail at the back of the property for walks and cycling. The staff were friendly and helpful, the room was a good size with a comfortable bed.
I wasn't keen on the cooked breakfast it wasn't warm enough, bacon and sausages not great. Continental breakfast was quite good could have been improved with a better selection and quality cereal for the children to enjoy. A lot of families were staying at Newton House, but to my disappointment there was no play equipment for them to enjoy. The garden is definitely big enough to accommodate a slide, swing etc. I think this would really benefit families who stay with younger children. Not in walking distance to any local shop or pub you have to drive everywhere.
Very friendly and helpful staff. Clive (owner) and Cliff (handyman, all rounder, decorator) were excellent, evening chatting in the bar, making guests feel very welcome. Clive is clearly doing a good job of turning this lovely old house into a haven for travellers who wish to visit the beautiful Derbyshire area.
Currently there is no food apart from breakfast, although Clive was happy to recommend local eateries. We were also made of this on checking in.
We were in a superior room overlooking the front entrance which was spacious and very comfortable, with a huge, very comfortable bed. The hotel has a large garden with mature trees and access at the rear directly onto the Tissington Trail. Only breakfast is served but there are many very good restaurants and pubs within a short drive. Staff very friendly and helpful.
The ensuite bathroom badly needed an upgrade. The sink was badly cracked, which the proprietor knew about but wasn't able to deal with straight away. Fair enough if we had been warned in advance and offered a token reduction in the rate but we were left to find out for ourselves which gives a bad first impression. The shower also needs upgrading - weak, esp when other residents drawing water. A major drawback is traffic noise - the hotel is on the heavily trafficked A515. The room had double glazing which is quite effective when closed, but we were there on one of the hottest weekends and in the absence of any other form of ventilation, had to sleep with windows open - not easy with hgv's hurtling past at 50mph all night! The garden is a major plus, esp for families - but is sadly neglected and under-used, with limited sitting-out areas. There is potential here to make this a very attractive place to stay.
Easy to find
Decoration needs to updated, breakfast choice poor, no fresh fruit, yoghurt, bread was served in their original bags, no evening meals and nearest place too far to walk.
Friendly staff lovely beer quiet relaxing location.
We were given room 9 and advised by the owner to flush and hold down the sanilav loo flush button in the on suite bathroom to to make sure that it did not disturb us by flushing in the middle of the night. Did this but the loo flushed it's self evey 80 seconds! Very unimpressed hawever we were moved to another roomm at 11.30 PM. Had this not been done we would have left as it was impossible to sleep. Why were we given tthis room in the first place?
Clean, comfortable, convenient. Breakfast offer was very good, and food was also good. Staff generally pleasant and helpful. Nice that there was a bar open in the evening. Direct access from the hotel to the Tissington Trail.
A shame that there was no offer of evening meal so we had to travel. The person on reception kept criticising other staff, and was placing a long order on the phone when we were checking out, and failed to acknowledge me.
Great Stuff need to do dinners though Breakfast was lovely Room was divine Service very friendly
Gurgling saniflow toilet but was not a major issue
finding the place took us over an hour and with crying babies not a good start.
Manically grinning staff
The hotel waited until we were a couple of miles away to ask for final directions, to advise us that we were being moved to a different hotel due to a plumbing issue. As part of a Wedding Party, it was only due to us allowing an extra hour on top of our travel time that we did not miss the actual wedding as we were booked into a hotel a further 7 miles away! Our exceptionally patient taxi driver thankfully agreed to follow us to the new accommodation. We felt that there was very little assistance given by Newton House Hotel and the simple act of smiling a lot, does not constitute an apology or give reassurance. We will not be stopping here again although we visit the area frequently.
Lovely clean room, lovely breakfast, lovely , peacefully location .
Apart from breakfast , there was no food at all being served, no snacks, no ice creams etc. being right on the tissington trail and surrounded by beautiful gardens, it would be buisness opportunity to serve afternoon teas etc within the grounds with all passing trade. Or even open the bar and serve drinks , bar meals. , snacks etc, Instead the bar wasn't open until 6 pm , we came back one day and just wanted a drink and we had to jump in the car to find a shop. Not even a vending machine. How unfortunate but these owners should listen to what there customers want .
Room was excellent value and hotel in an ideal spot for cycling and walking.
