It was ideally situated for the Excel Conference Centre Where do I start? The cot for our 18 month old daughter was not in our room when we checked in. I had requested it when booking and had telephoned 2 days prior to arrival to confirm this request. The front desk staff and manager were completely unhelpful and could not find a cot from anywhere. My wife and I had a sleepless night with our daughter between us. Excuses given were that there were quite a few families already checked in before us and that there had been an oversight. A simple telephone call to explain this and we would have brought our own travel cot. This ruined my wife's first day in London and my first day at a Conference. We stayed 3 nights, and during this time the corridor outside our room was completely redecorated- plastering, painting and re-carpeting. There was a racket outside our door from 08:00 all day. Good job we'd slept well! The corridor was full of a dust cloud and paint fumes, and was an obstacle course of ladders and paint trays to negotiate. Great fun for a small child. Not so great for an asthmatic! We had no warning of this and clearly no thought or planning had been used when allocating rooms to guests. After the first night our room cards were de-activated, so after completing the obstacle course back to reception they were surprised to hear that we weren't checking out and our booking was for 3 nights. Most inconvenient and showed the lack of communication and poor management. On our final day we asked for a late check out, to coincide with the end of my conference, they wanted to charge us for it. After explaining what a fabulous time we'd experienced in their hotel they finally relented and allowed us an extra couple of hours at no extra charge. Whoopy do. Won't be going back!

The staff is excellent:friendly, professional, capable... Being a seasoned traveller, I can say these qualities are not that easy to find... Especially when they relate to all the staff! The first room I was given (on the 3rd floor) was simply unacceptable. I asked to change, and was given a room on the 4th floor (reception staff was reluctant, as there were works on that floor, but I must say the workers were the quieter crew I have ever seen - and heard: I'd hire them, should I need any work done at home!) which was much better, but still not up to the usual "superior room" standards at Novotel. When you choose a Novotel, you do it because you know what to expect: this is not the case with Novotel Excel: the common areas - resataurants, lobby, ecc.. - are very well decorated, and very nice, but this cannot be said for the rooms (at leats, not those on the 3rd and 4th floor), This was kind of disappointing, as I always stay at Novotel or Novotel Suite, when there is one where I have to go. The wi-fi (thorugh Orange France) did not work, but it got my payment (9.9 euro): I have receipt of the payment, but never received the login code, and though I had to pay for wired connection (14.5 £), as I needed to work for a few hours, reception told me they could not refound the price I paid for Orange. I am afraid I will avoid Novotel Excel, should I be in the area again, though, as said above, staff is really nice.

The wonderful customer service - we were not given the room we had reserved, so were given a complimentary upgrade to a suite. The quality of the furnishings in the room was quite poor; there were marks on the wall, stains on the curtain and chips out of the wooden furniture. However, the cleanliness and comfort were brilliant and far outweighed these minor faults.

We loved the design of the hotel: very creative, designed with taste. We were impressed. As we like the Docklands area, we think the hotel's location is great: peaceful, beautiful and the dlr station is very easy to reach. We didn't like that the window couldn't be completely opened but is understandable and also the bar was a bit too quiet.

We enjoyed our stay at Novotel - we couldnt fault anything. We found the room, facilities and breakfast outstanding. Staff were very friendly, efficient and organised. We will choose this hotel again - it was a good location to go to the o2 arena which was where we were going. Quick trip on the Tube taking no more than 10 minutes.

Small room poorly laid out. Toilet separate from rest of bathroom. Gap in between bathroom doors was embarrasing for colleagues sharing. Desk lamp fixed to table right next to the tv annoying.

The Novotel is an ideal location for th o2 arena, the rooms are comfortable and very clean, the hotel is modern and is very pleasant to just sit and relax in, the view from the upper deck is amazing at night. The buffet breakfast was most enjoyable, i would definitely stay here again and have already recomended the Novotel to family and friends and in my opinion it is also very good value for your money Mari Rae (Glasgow)
