There has been some modernisation to bring the hotel up to a good standard, E.G. the bathroom had been refitted and there were modern wall lights etc. The aforementioned modernisation appears to be only partially complete, the windows were single glazed and suffered from condensation badly; the wall paper was lifting in the corridor. Some of the decor was still "old pub" style. However, if they complete the project to update the building, it should be nice once finished.

The Oakland was very good value for money we had the 4 posted bedroom. Our stay was for a friends birthday party which was only walking distance from the venue, we then came back to the hotel as they had a live band on and the bar open until 2am...... So beware of the noise!!

the central location close to family The breakfast times were very limited unlike other hotels. The decor was very old and shabby. The bed was very small and uncomfortable.

Room was quite basic but clean and comfortable. Felt quite intimadated by the clientele in the evening when returning from our evening at a wedding. Should be another entrance for staying guests.

Very clean bathroom, tea making facilities (+biscuits!) reasonable cooked breakfast plus choice of cereals & toast. On arrival was a bit concerned about having to sign a form stating that there was live music downstairs in the evenings until possibly 2am the following morning. Although we were not affected by the noise as we were at the back of the hotel. Cannot recall seeing noise aspect being mentioned on the hotel web site.

Quick and efficient check-in. Clean and tidy. Pub down stairs. Right in the town centre - a short walk to many eating and drinking places.

Location was good, Room was adequate, breakfast was reasonable The Music in the bar was loud and went on till 3am. Would not go back or recommend it to friends unless there was nowhere else to go in that area.

There was strange smell / atmosphere as if the hoel had not been aired properly. This cpuld have been caused by the massive pile of clean linen at base of the stairs (real fire hazard, I do not know if it has a fire certificate) or the chinese take away next door. The hotel yard also lookeked as if it had never been cleaned - fast food and fast food wrappers.

Value for money - variety of eating places within very easy reach. Spacious rooms - simple but clean and very good value. Noisy position - placed in pedestrian square with the inevitable noise from youths - but not too bad. Noise insulation in the hotel could be vastly improved but altogether good value apart from that.

The location was good and the hotel is easy to find. The hotel is very dated, has no lifts and the shower was barely a trickle, not good when a family are trying to share a room and get ready.

Fair size room- the staff were pleasant Facilities were poor- shower did not work I.e difficult to regulate with hot water being dominant, toilet seat was broken- could not open window as it was broken. It was not near a riverside as stated- infact it was in the middle of the shopping centre and built up area all around. Breakfast was included however this was of poor quality- one bacon slice, one egg, one tomato, a few mushrooms- for the vegetarian there were no alternative hot meal options- only omit the meat and eggs. You had to make your own toast- one toaster which was extremely slow and had a line of people waiting. Table we were sat at was wobbly which meant our tea splattered all over each time we moved.

The hotel is under new management who are doing their best to raise the standard. However more could be done regarding the breakfast offered especially if you dont want a cooked breakfast. Service was quick and they serve the breakfast in the bar which must have been cleaned and turned around very early in the morning. I had a disability which I did not mention but it would have been nice if the receptionist had noticed this and moved me to a room on a lower floor but I guess tht was my fault for not mentioning it. Parking is also a problem.
