Lovely old building
Bit pricey, staff slow to fix problems
The staff really looked after us and our breakfast was 10/10.
On arrival we were met with a stale damp smell in the lobby! When we entered our room they had cleaned the room the best it could be cleaned. However it needed serious modernisation so was always going to look grubby. being 6'2" it's rare a bed is long enough but even the person I shared the twin room with a room with is 5'8" and his feet were pressed against the end of his single bed!
The building has character and the staff are friendly. Like the building they too all character and they are all very different. They don't all present an identikit corporate face as you would get in a big chain hotel. Real people who love their job and care about their customers. The hotel claims free wifi in all rooms. My room was at the end of the corridor and in many hotels when I end up in such a room the wifi is non-existent. Therefore I didn't hold out much hope but I needn't have worried. Full strength and rock solid reliable. The first night I had a three course dinner (a friend joined me) and we had a wonderful meal. My choice was rare steak and full marks to the chef because it came just as I like it. Every part of the meal was delicious. Second night I just had a bar meal and I was tempted by Bangers and Mash. Not quite the fine dining of the first night but this was amongst the best bangers and mash I have ever tasted. Quality.
The one complaint was that there was a mix up with the wine with the dinner. It wasn't served when it should have been, basically the order hadn't been communicated. Then when it was brought the wine hadn't been pre-chilled so we had to wait with it in an ice bucket for quite some time before it was remotely cold enough to drink. The staff apologized for the error as this was the only problem we had. Now I know you are thinking "who is this man - white wine with steak?". As my friend was having fish one of us had to give way to the other - the choice of wine by the glass was limited.
Comfortable bed, clean room
Too focused on the wedding the next day, staff rude at breakfast No coffee in room, just decaf sticks
Location and historic building with nice and well-kept garden.
Breakfast service. Arriving late resulted in being in a dining room with many used taboes with dirty cutlery, plates, cups etc. Staff seemed to have 'forgotten' about us which resulted in a long wait.
Staff are excellent. Very friendly and helpful
big room four poster, too big for 1 but very comfortable, staff all very polite, good choice on menu for supper & breakfast, will stay again.
nothing to dislike
Large comfortable twin room also had a sofa to relax on. Lovely old building. Breakfast was very tasty with friendly service.
It would have been helpful to be given the wifi password without having to ask for it.
Nice location, comfortable hotel. Staff very helpful and polite. Food was good quality and value for money.
We stayed for two nights and on the second night there was a wedding reception in the main restaurant. Our evening meal was served in the breakfast room which was not as pleasant and did not have any windows. It was hot weather and it felt quite stuffy. The staff seemed to be a little stressed with the workload of the wedding party. However the food quality remained high standard and it did not diminish our weekend enjoyment. We were upgraded to none standard room on arrival which was nice. Would stay there again no problem.
In need of an update
Lovely tasteful retreat
THE STAFF COULD NOT DO ENOUGH TO MAKE OUR STAY ANY BETTER fantastic STAFF!!!!!
the building being quiet soom soze
The location was beautiful and peaceful. Old building with lots of character and a very pretty well looked after garden. Plenty of seating outside too. Dog friendly and no charge which is proof they are dog friendly, he could also go in the bar area with us. Good sized room and clean. We also had a sofa. It was quiet in the hotel on the night we stayed, so I cannot comment if it would be noisy with more people coming and going. The staff were friendly and helpful. Didn't have a meal as no food until 7pm on Sunday evening and we wanted to eat earlier. Plenty of parking spaces for cars.
Just a little more attention to detail: cups, glasses and plates left on tables outside and in the bar for hours!
Quiet location, very good food.
Beds not the most comfortable, plumbing noisy.
Funny staff - friendly in a local kind of way. Old Building Location
Wallpaper peeling off Beige bathroom suite
Spur of the moment trip so was not expecting too much, however, was pleasantly surprised. Rooms were lovely. Staff very helpful. Surroundings great. We would stay again definitely.
Had to change room due to bedding not being changed. B fast was full English but not very nice. The staff were OK but the cleanliness of the room really let the place down. When we went to leave the lady on reception said '' Hope every thing was OK and you visit again'' she didn't really mean it as she was opening mail and didn't even look at us when she was talking. I know the area well and could recommend far better hotels for the same price.
This was a delightful place, the staff were very friendly, service excellent and a great breakfast. There is very little I can fault - I particularly liked the layout and style of the lounge bar - most hotels either have a pub or a sitting room - this really was a lounge bar - a great place to just sit and relax. The grounds were superb.
Not sure there was anything I could criticise
A beautiful historic building with an immaculate formal garden. Rooms were very clean, the staff were very friendly, and overall very comfortable.
The token bath mat/s, the not quite toasted toast and the proper poached eggs were not quite soft enough. The breakfast was otherwise delicious all top quality ingredients.
I loved everything. The room I stayed in, the friendliness of the staff, the gorgeous old building and the food. Everything about my stay there was great.
Building with character. Large well appointed room. Good parking. Quiet location.
Bed wasn't the best - a rather cheap and tacky four poster
