Boasting spectacular views over beautiful Oban Bay, this Victorian hotel offers luxury rooms with free Wi-Fi. Less than a mile from the town centre, it has an elegant restaurant.
Score from 634 reviews Very good
A Victorian Hotel built between 1865 and 1901, the Columba Hotel overlooks the town of Oban and Oban Bay. It has a 24-hour front desk, a traditional restaurant and 2 bars.
Score from 480 reviews Good
Good central location.
No hotel car park.Car parking in Oban bit of a pain.
Great location. Helpful staff. View from bedroom at front.
Bedroom could do with a freshen up - but don't let that deter you from a stay. No 'lorne' sausage or haggis at breakfast!!
Parking was an issue
The location and the view.
Tired hotel - past its best. Poor TV reception on dated sets.
Wifi was excellent throughout hotel and the resteraunt was nice.
Room at the back facing the road so was quite loud at night with people leaving pubs. Room was basic! Shower doors were broken and someone else's soap had been left in the shower! Very run down and old fashioned.
Needs a but of tender loving care!
Location, cafe down stairs.
Could use a little updating
Good position for ferry and train station
Terrible decorations: bad taste, worn carpets, everything needing investment.
The bar area and restaurant seemed to be areas that were maintained as they are in public view. However the carpets throughout the stairwell were worn out and dated. Our room which we paid extra for was in need of a refurbishment. When I complained about our T.V reception being of very poor quality, I was told by a rather useless red headed male receptionist that seemed as though he would just not be bothered, that ‘ it’s like this throughout Oban’, with no offer of anything else. This I feel was not true, as on our visit we frequented a number of bars and restaurants and found the T.V quality excellent. I feel that to recommend this hotel to anyone would be false advertisement and do no business any good. I do not feel I will be using booking.com or Caledonian Hotel in Oban in the future as they both spoiled our trip. This is something I intend to add to trip advisor.
Nice view of harbour
Filthy pillows Cheap, uncomfortable bed with springs sticking out Single glazing Taxi rank at front of hotel so don't expect any sleep if you are staying there on a Friday or Saturday night!
old rooms, sloping floors. cracking paint, noisy creaking bed. We have stayed here for 20 years and watched it deteriorate gradually even after a partial refit. too expensive for what you get, inconsistency in room allocations as they are different on the 3rd floor and very small
The cleanliness of rooms the size of rooms
The bathrooms need renovated found very hard to get in to the high half bath to shower no rails to help get in or out. The breakfast was not to appetizing.Decor in rooms could be better
The hotel is better than it was , but still a lot of update needed in the bedrooms for the hotel to regain its top status
the Caledonian Hotel is ideally placed for the bus and train station, I stayed there last year and had a lovely Airy spacious room with a very comfortable bed, The breakfasts are excellent with the most delicious properly cooked kippers the staff are very professional friendly and helpful. I thoroughly enjoy staying at the Caley and it is also excellent value
disappointment apparantly all the twin bedded rooms face the back. This is a terrible shame as I had imagined looking out over the bay. Only if you have a double apparantly. Any chance of rectifying this caledonian?
Easy to get to from the ferry
Not a warm welcome. No car parking facilities
The staff, they were great and very helpful. When I got to the hotel I was booked into a single room as I has selected from the website but the booking had not processed for some reason and my room had been given away, however I was immediately given the next available double room at no extra cost and without a feeling of "this is a nightmare" in sight. The days I was travelling were extremely busy and every hotel from glasgow to Inverness we're booked up solid so this hotel was kind of a last resort but turned out to be a winner on location, right outside the harbour wall with all the hustle and bustle of oban it was a great base for exploring.
Ok so I am a seasoned traveller who has stayed in crazy hostels in India to high tech palaces in japan I except the unexpected and can deal with dirt. The Caledonian was welcoming but the hotel is tired, I like oldie Worldie charm which is something this hotel could do with! While the bedroom was comfortable, the bathroom was in need of some rescue it was verging on dirty and a bit dog eared around the edges. Reception was welcoming from the staffs point of view but I can't help but feel they are let down by the "upkeep", or lack of, by the building itself, peeling wallpaper stained and ripped carpet on the stairwells and general lack of love or interest to make the place shine as well on the inside as I does on the outside, really showed through which is quite sad! The breakfast...was included in the price which is great and when u sit down in the dinning room you are again greeted by a nice smile and instantly asked if you would like tea or coffee and handed a menu that all looks very appealing and a buffet which is seamingly full of choice and fresh produce which all looks very nice. However when my poached eggs, toast, sausage and black pudding came to the table I could have been eating at wetherspoons(other chains are available) the only thing not seamingly steamed on my plate was the toast I think! The egg, and I love eggs, were revulting so steeped in vinegar and rubberised the same goes for the sausgage! I ate my black pudding, becaus who can resist, I am scottish after all, but was really disappointed, it felt completely processed and not fresh at all!
The location is very central to Oban.
The staff serving breakfast seemed quite disorganised, and it almost felt like they were surprised to see us for breakfast each morning. On all days there was at least one thing missing from the table (e.g. Butter, milk, etc). Also the breakfasts weren't very consistent, one of the party just ordered sausage, bacon and potato scone. One day he got two of each, the next he got one of each... The carpet particularly on the stairs and the wicker chairs are getting very worn.
Position is great handy for ferries to Mull and other islands. Food is good and the decor in lounge is modern with great views over the bay. Hotel is very central with plenty of shops and restaurants to choose from.
The hotel is badly in need of updating. The bedrooms although clean with plenty of room are rather tired looking. Did not know you could still get big bulky T.V's. In saying that it did not spoil our holiday.
Location, adjacent to ferry terminal on the harbour. Polite and attentive reception staff. Rooms were warm, adequate and clean.
Bar/kitchen staff were barely helpful. Due to late arrival of ferry from Mull we dined just before kitchen closed. However on finishing main course we were denied a desert as "kitchen closed 5 minutes ago". TV reception is poor.
On arrival, the receptionist was oriental, had very poor English, was off hand and managed to check us in without looking at us once. At the bar, the foreign barmaid walked away while I was giving her a v simple order for 2 drinks. The choice of beer was v poor and did not include any ales.
Location next to harbour is excellent.Breakfast was excellent as were the breakfast and cleaning staff.
Bed was just a double and mattress hard as hobs of h**l! En-suite in need of upgrade. Bit rich charging £165! Bar closed (even for us as residents) @11pm unceremoniously! Staff made it clear by making as much noise with vacuum cleaner than our presence unwelcome in bar area after 11pm. At 10.15 told no hot milk based drinks (as coffee machine been turned off ). Very unimpressed with what could be an excellent hotel.
Double glazing not set properly, broken window in room, very poor internet, ordered salmon and coke, but out of, mattress in room was in need of replacement, room service food was over cooked and dry and no car parking.
I love the location right on the harbour. having a drink on the terrace with thw sunset over Mull is one of my favorite things to do in Oban.
good position on the front at Oban, nice little area outside for a drink and to watch the ferries coming and going. Bar and breakfast areas were quite nice, don't know about the restaurant as we couldn't get in due to a big booking!
our room(227) very dated, decor very drab and tired. TV was an old 14'' portable stuck on top of a very lopsided set of drawers which didn't really matter as the reception was so poor we could only watch one very snowy channel. Old wooden sash windows that rattled in the wind and kept out no noise whatsoever!. Our double bed was two old spring singles pushed together and it was the most uncomfortable and noisy bed we have ever come across, it was so hard and whenever you moved the springs made an awful twanging sound and dug into every part of your body. A really awful experience. Cleanliness of the bathroom left a lot to be desired.
i had small room at back of hotel it was very noisy.while friend had lovely big room at front with great view and was quiet and we both payed the same.
