Score from 562 reviews Good
MacKays is a high-quality, 4-star guest house, which is exclusively for adults. The award-winning property stands out on Oban's beautiful seafront, with uninterrupted views of the busy harbour.
Score from 326 reviews Superb
old rooms, sloping floors. cracking paint, noisy creaking bed. We have stayed here for 20 years and watched it deteriorate gradually even after a partial refit. too expensive for what you get, inconsistency in room allocations as they are different on the 3rd floor and very small
The cleanliness of rooms the size of rooms
The bathrooms need renovated found very hard to get in to the high half bath to shower no rails to help get in or out. The breakfast was not to appetizing.Decor in rooms could be better
The hotel is better than it was , but still a lot of update needed in the bedrooms for the hotel to regain its top status
Easy to get to from the ferry
Not a warm welcome. No car parking facilities
Position is great handy for ferries to Mull and other islands. Food is good and the decor in lounge is modern with great views over the bay. Hotel is very central with plenty of shops and restaurants to choose from.
The hotel is badly in need of updating. The bedrooms although clean with plenty of room are rather tired looking. Did not know you could still get big bulky T.V's. In saying that it did not spoil our holiday.
Location next to harbour is excellent.Breakfast was excellent as were the breakfast and cleaning staff.
Bed was just a double and mattress hard as hobs of h**l! En-suite in need of upgrade. Bit rich charging £165! Bar closed (even for us as residents) @11pm unceremoniously! Staff made it clear by making as much noise with vacuum cleaner than our presence unwelcome in bar area after 11pm. At 10.15 told no hot milk based drinks (as coffee machine been turned off ). Very unimpressed with what could be an excellent hotel.
Double glazing not set properly, broken window in room, very poor internet, ordered salmon and coke, but out of, mattress in room was in need of replacement, room service food was over cooked and dry and no car parking.
I love the location right on the harbour. having a drink on the terrace with thw sunset over Mull is one of my favorite things to do in Oban.
good position on the front at Oban, nice little area outside for a drink and to watch the ferries coming and going. Bar and breakfast areas were quite nice, don't know about the restaurant as we couldn't get in due to a big booking!
our room(227) very dated, decor very drab and tired. TV was an old 14'' portable stuck on top of a very lopsided set of drawers which didn't really matter as the reception was so poor we could only watch one very snowy channel. Old wooden sash windows that rattled in the wind and kept out no noise whatsoever!. Our double bed was two old spring singles pushed together and it was the most uncomfortable and noisy bed we have ever come across, it was so hard and whenever you moved the springs made an awful twanging sound and dug into every part of your body. A really awful experience. Cleanliness of the bathroom left a lot to be desired.
i had small room at back of hotel it was very noisy.while friend had lovely big room at front with great view and was quiet and we both payed the same.
The location was probably the only good point.
Worn carpets, broken loose tiles on bathroom floor. Horrible furniture. Free wi-fi that doesn't work. Overpriced, staff who just don't care, breakfast was yuck.
The location is excellent, my parents are elderly and found it easy to walk to everything.
The hotel is very tired now and are room was very basic. But the staff are very helpful.
Location close to station, pier, great room and view
Poor menu in formal restaurant Bar Food seemed to have more choice
Location , apart from noice from party people till 3.30 am
The room, the bathroom, the fact when we came for breakfast we were told that we did not have the room we had stayed in. If they do not have a better system related to the guests, i just Wonder .....sorry this was an experience we do not want again !
Excellent location and stunning views from the bedroom
Bed so uncomfortable, forniture old and not well maintained, wifi so slow. So expensive for service and quality. Not good value for money at all.
Good location Friendly staff Included breakfast was good
Beds were small
I had the pleasure of staying at the Caledonian at April this year, and with the intentions of returning soon 2 the hotel, as we enjoyed this stay even more, as the staff went over board to assist if required. Incidentally in 2015 we are returning once more to our fav hotel for the Oban Mod, and are booked in. What I liked was I asked if it was possible to have a room groung floor, nr lift, as mobility probs, they worked wonders for me, I cannot thank them enough. I would like to ask you, if u could pass on to the staff my thanks. Thank you for allowing me to say my thoughts....... John Maclean
There is nothing that I do not like ... stupendous hotel, ...John
Far too expensive, rooms very tired.
Shower very small and not function properly.
Staff were excellent
The hotel is central, shops etc. and to where ever you intend to go, by train or ferry. We had a lovely room on the front
Convenient location, nice friendly hotel. Good value.
Didn't have a view of the harbour
View from room was good. For what we paid our 1st room was poor with a narrow gap between bed and wall -my husband tripped and we were moved to a much bigger and better room which made the remainder of our stay very pleasant.
Lunch time there was only one person serving in bar I waited 15 minutes to order soup&sadwiches Staff in bar and dining room required motivation-they were pleasant but lacked attention to customers.
The location was great. Breakfast great.
Our family stayed as a 60th birthday celebration. One of the rooms we booked (a double) was supposed to have extras as it was at the front of the hotel and cost us more. In fact it was very small and quite shabby (much smaller than the ordinary double my daughter had at the back of the hotel). The curtains were stained and it could have done with re-decoration. Only one window opened and that for only about two inches to rest on a screw. The view was good though.
