We liked the location, and the room was fairly unique (though not as
much as the photos on the booking page had led us to believe, and which
we'd paid extra for).
On the day of departure, we had a really early (4am) checkout, in order
to catch the first train from Oban station. The night before, we checked
with the front desk that there'd be someone there at all times.
On the morning of leaving the hotel, we went down to the desk...only to find it unattended and THE FRONT DOOR WAS LOCKED. Even more unacceptable than that, was the fact that my wife and I literally had to wander around the ground floor shouting for help, even having to go into the staff areas to summon help, but there was nobody there.
In the end, a confused member of the kitchen staff came out and unlocked the front door for us. At this point, we were only barely able to catch our train, so I flung our room key on the desk and ran out.
I liked this hotel, and I really wanted to rate it higher, but '24 hour front desk staffing' obviously means different things to different people.
