Less than a mile from York’s historic centre, this friendly hotel, built in 1870, retains stained glass windows and a splendid oak staircase. There are good-value rooms and a restaurant and bar.
Score from 1255 reviews Good

Room was pleasant and comfortable.
Bit far from town centre.
Too noisy at night from other residents . Bathroom tiny .
Looked good on the outside - great location for city centre
The interior needs complete refurbishment - not only decor but fixtures and fittings, carpets were worn and dirty. Poor housekeeping The breakfast was very poor with unclean crockery and appliances
Location and en-suite bar
Rooms seemed dingy (bad lighting) Toilet need a 'quick' double flush to (sometimes) work Shower quite small, Towels felt strange
Good location only 10 minutes walk to the city gate by the Minster. Easy to find. Has a car park. Buffet breakfast included.
Room was pleasant. Breakfast was also great, with lots of choice. Can easily walk into York town centre in about 10-15 minutes which was very convenient. Good place to stay if you want a comfy room at a good price.
nothing at all
the place was smelly, and dirty and not pleasant at all.
friendly staff, breakfast was ok and so was the privacy
quite a long walk into city center, we stayed in 2 bed cottage, furniture was very old and well used, very basic furnishings, place needed a really good clean, no wifi
Location was good, staff friendly and the price very reasonable.
Room was small, bed was uncomfortable and the breakfast very poor
excellent value by york standards and 15min walk to city wall. Bus stop outside and adequate parking
The young lady that showed us to our room was very nice and friendly and the ladies doing the breakfast were pleasant.
Room was good shower was very poor. Breakfast not much choice. The chap working the bar, wearing a HH jacket is not good for the customers his face would crack if he were to smile.
Walking distance to York City centre
Scruffy towels, dirty bathrooms, tiny TV. No chair in room, Dirty everything
All the staff was very helpful
car parking area very congested and small
The only plus to this accommodation is the location. .. 15 minute walk to the centre of York
Twin room tiny. En suite tiny . Room not very clean . TV didn't work . Bedding not sufficient and worn out . Late evening bar staff ( female ) very unfriendly . Totally different to a stay there 2 years previously . Very shabby and although reasonably priced , still not value for money . Very sad decline .
location room size car parkings Breakfast staff all polite
TV didnt fully work, asked for remote told probably wasnt one no manager to address and and got no further shower - a trickle, very small and cramped hot tap a trickle One day room wasnt cleaned or bins emptied Lock broke (luckily as we left to go out not whilst in it) was fixed but had to take all valuables out with us for the day. On return couldnt get in the room and bar person didnt have a key for us - had to phone manager to check this out as he is not on sight and there is no one with any authority to make decisions on site after 12pm. dead wasps on window sills.
The location was ideal being a short walk from the centre of York. The staff at breakfast were helpful and friendly.
We were disappointed with the property in general. We stayed in the 'cottage' which turned out to be an end terrace across the road from the Old Grey Mare Hotel. The property was not very clean and there was a stale smell throughout. It wasn't very accurately represented on the website at all. I wouldn't stay there again.
friendly staff, easy to get to town centre on local bus, cheap.
shower very compact, no good for the larger person, no handrails on some of the stairs
Good Indian Resturant in the Hotel
The staff were very friendly and helpful. And it was great to have a well-priced accommodation with onsite parking so close to York centre! The room was small, but for the price it was very good value.
The overall run down, uncared for premises. Bedside lamps that were dangerous, the shower was inadequate, linen in the bed room and dinning room was dirty and stained. The lack of parking spaces.
Excellent value for money ,great location 10 min to city centre ,enjoyed the breakfast , and staff were very friendly ,
The meal in the Indian restaurant was very average, and carpets in the accommodation need replacing
The staff were friendly and the location for us was good.
the room was small and the furnishings were dated.
The staff were really friendly and the pub across from the little cottage was full of friendly locals. Just a very pleasant stay
We stayed at their cottage just on the other side of the street. Everything was perfect but the range for WiFi.
WiFi only at the main house/pub.
Nice quiet area, 10 minute walk to town. Friendly bar staff. Good beer. TV and pool table in lounge.
Small room. Very small shower room. No cooked breakfast.
