location, good to see the village carnival and the community thriving. The hotel obviously has history and character.
Little things need attention, but it needs renovation and a good clean to warrant the prices.
Fantastic stay, one night only but will be staying there again
First room was unsatisfactory. We have stayed here before and fully understood the type of building but cleanliness was a major concern. Mattress did not fit bed by a long way. TV was about computer screen size and located approximately 20-25 feet from the bed head. Quilt had a hole in it - all a bit too much so we asked for another room. Were kindly moved to a deluxe room which, whilst marginally better, would certainly not be worth the money. Outside plants were growing through the window, dead wasp on windowcill, stains on bedclothes....the list goes on. The biggest disappointment was that when asking about booking a table for dinner we were told there is no restaurant open (contrary to what their website clearly indicates - 7 days) and advised to go to the George over the road, a 10 minute walk to a carvery or a local chinese takeaway. There was no milk for making tea/coffee. When asked for milk we were told that the rooms have no fridges so they do not leave milk. All hotel rooms we have stayed in provide long life milk in small cartons. We were provided with a jug of milk which attracted a mosquito overnight! Having stayed here twice before, the most recent in 2004 it has to be said the conditions were better on our first visit in 1973. The whole experience was extremely disappointing as the hotel had sentimental connections for us but we will not be returning.
Staff friendly and helpful. Was impressed with the flexibility of the menu and availability of gluten free foods, and the staff remembered at breakfast without being prompted. Best Gluten free fried fish ever! Excellent cooked breakfast. Staff went out of their way to provide us with extra time in our room.
1960's decor was novel and cheerful but in my opinion not in keeping with a building of that age. Window in need of repair and leaking in the rain.
Most pleasant...ambience and friendly attention...bed a little uncomfkrtable but otherwise satisfactory...worth another future stayover!!!
The room was very large with a huge bathroom and nice period features
In all the hotel was a little dated and tatty, a DVD player was advertised as being in our room but was not, which was a little disappointing for the kids, we did tell the staff but nothing could be done, however we did enjoy our stay and enjoyed a comfortable night after spending the day at longleat.
The staff were very friendly and helpful. The building is very old, very big and has lots of wonderful character, sloping floors etc.
The water pressure is an obvious problem and needs sorting out. The bathroom is very spacious and it is such a pity that the water pressure is so poor. We did mention this and they said they have tried to sort it out. Also there was a problem with the lighting in the dining room on the night we were there.
Wonderful authenticity; the sort of place which remains warm and timeless
The village of Mere was nice but I would not stay at this hotel again.
Hotels family rooms were overbooked. storage space very limited in room wifi advertised but did not work. Bathroom facilities very poor standard.
Friendly family run hotel. Very historical & lots of character
The staff were v helpful and friendly.
The room was a bit 'down at heel' and there was an awful dripping noise outside the window that kept me awake half the night. Synthetic bedding horrible. Mattress did not fit the bed.
very friendly staff, we had a family room which was spacious, warm and comfy. We had our evening meal and breakfast at the Old Ship Inn and it was definitely value for money, cooked to order and huge portions. If visiting the area again I would definitely stay again.
Need a change, not are a four stars hotel, only or maximum a 2 stars hotel.
wifi connection not good
The staff were very pleasant. The cooked breakfast was good.
We had 3 rooms. Our room had a ver poor shower. The family room for four did not have a wardrobe. My son and partner had an attic room and the mattress was much smaller than the double bed frame. The staff gave them another mattress to put on the floor and they only had a open rail to hang their clothes on. On the second night the was an extremely loud group playing till past midnight and our room floor was vibrating it was so loud. We had not been told about this, but they did reduce our bill.
Old world Inn , Quirky, a bit Fawlty Towers
Room preparation. Poor water pressure in bathrooms
I liked how old the building was. It was also in a good location we walked 50m and there was a playground and a walk up a very large hill.
The room was hot.
disappointed not seeing a ghost in room 7!!!
The bedroom, the bed, the facilities in the bedroom, the lack of milk for making tea, the fact that the plug was no where near the kettle, we know it was old but it just looked awful and not inviting at all. We have stayed at plenty of old places and all of them were characterful and welcoming and comfortable!
staff very friendly, hotel very cosy had breakfast and dinner there food very good
rooms needed updating, poor showing facilities
All a bit down at heel. Uncomfortable bed.
Fabulous old inn which I know from 30years ago. Good sized bedroom, comfortable bed.
The bedroom and bathroom decor looked 'tired' & some lights didn't work . Breakfast was good, but there seemed to be only one member of staff on duty. The table was crumb-covered, and this typified my general criticism - lack of attention to detail spoils what could be a wonderful, historic place to stay - why no info. about the history?
