Nearly every aspect of my stay at Oxford Backpackers was awful. There was not a single aspect to recommend the place.
In no particular order: urine covering the floor of the men's showers and toilets and no heed paid to overall cleanliness. Toilet seats unanimously broken. The beds, according to a staff member, did not get cleaned, but the rooms did. I once saw a man vacuuming a hallway floor. Other than that, in 8 days, I did not see a single piece of cleaning equipment or a cleaner doing so much as thinking about cleaning. The staff, with one lovely exception, were surly and just generally unpleasant. It's insanely noisy for most of the night (as, despite requests, people in the common room tend to be loud and, during my stay, didn't have scruples about bringing this noise into the corridors outside rooms), and it is insecure. All the doors are coded, but I got into the building three times without needing a code. The rooms are also coded, but if someone knocks, someone else tends to let them in. The lockers are too small to put most types of luggage in and everything has to be paid for. Locker space costs. Anything you might need is twice the price of a supermarket. Where does this profit go? Beats me. It's a dump, with no care taken over even the most basic of niceties. Patchy carpets, nasty smell, filthy windows, unwashed beds etc.
Rather than stay there a final night, I checked out early, which apparently I wasn't allowed to do. However I was definitely going to leave, and apparently this forfeited my five pound deposit. Allegedly I had agreed to this in the disclaimer, though I'm certain I didn't. I was in a rush, but all the same I asked what they needed the five pound for as I hadn't broken or damaged anything. Apparently, it was housekeeping.
Virtually nothing. In fact, nothing.
