Although the room was generally clean ie floors, bedding and towels the rest left a lot to be desired. The wardrobe and bathroom door both had handles missing, the grouting in the tiles around the bath and washbasins were black and/or pink, the bottom of the shower curtain was also pink. The stairs to the bedrooms was next to the kitchen and the kitchen door was propped open so both the stairs and landing smelt greasy. The website said there was a restaurant and a bar/tavern which served meals but the restaurantt wasn't open and the bar was only serving restauranr/a la carte meals which wasn't what we wanted. Staff were miserable and lacked friendliness. We spent as little time as possible there. If we hadn't had a cheap deal we would have walked out.

A perfect location for exploring the region. Food was ok. Very shabby throughout, hallway to room 29 has a awfull smell and was riddled with damp walls. Room was bare and stark with mould all over bathroom window and bedroom door looked like it had just been reclained from a wood salvage yard.

The staff were very nice and friendly. The location is beautiful. Our room smelt damp and old. The decor was old and tired and there were many spiders webs so obviously not cleaned properly. The staff although very nice weren't very efficient and it took a long time for them to offer us tea and coffee at breakfast. The shower was terrible it took ages to get the temperature correct and then is was barely a trickle! It was definitely not worth £100 a night. We would have happily paid £60 I think that's all it's worth.

The staff were extremely good, pleasant and courteous. The part of the hotel we were in was in dire need of renovation. There were damp patches on the walls and paper peeling off the ceiling. The bathroom was poor, although there was plenty of hot water. The only good think about the room was that it overlooked the garden and was on the ground floor - a plus for my husband. I could not therefore recommend this hotel until the necessary upgrading had been carried out.

For the money we paid we thought it was great! We booked despite all the negative reviews and I'm glad to say our stay was better than we expected. The room was clean and spacious, even though some of the fittings were a little tired. The staff were really welcoming and the food in the restaurant was really tasty. Breakfast on the first morning was buffet style and plenty of it, but on the second morning was freshly cooked so even better. Having read reviews by people who stayed at the same time as us I find it difficult to believe it was the same hotel. The only negative was that the hotel was in need of an update in some areas.

Staff went out of their way to accommodate additional requests such as flowers, chocolates and champagne for an anniversary suprise for my parents. All staff were extremley friendly and helpful, food was fantastic super quality and reasonably priced gourmet cuisine equal to any 5 star restaurant. We would totally recommend to all who wanted a short break or a evening with nice food. Bedroom decoration required a little tlc, and didn't really appreciate the dust webs on the ceiling above the bed, however bedding and ensuite were spotlessly clean. All necessities seemed to be provided, hairdryer, tea & coffee facilities, tv, use of iron and ironing board if needed.

The staff generally were very helpful and experienced. The food quality & variety in the restaurant was very good. Room facilities were poor overall and bathroom/ shower fittings showed poor maintenance. Generally the hotel requires much improved housekeeping and maintenance (carpets dirty and doors ill matched and unpainted. Noise from adjoining room poorly insulated. In short the hotel requires a major refurbishment and attention to detail on facilities and housekeeping.

It was a lovely building and the room was surprisingly large. It was quiet, I was not disturbed by noises through the night once. And the breakfast was buffet style with both hot and cold food on offer. Very pleasant stay.

The place was very friendly with both staff and local patrons greeting me on arrival. Food was mostly local produce and of good quality and the room was well laid out and comfortable. Nothing really other than perhaps a reception sign on entering the front door: The reception is the bar, which I found easily enough!

Nice clean room, friendly staff, good value for money paid, breakfast was fine. Could be great if improvements are made. Such a shame, really nice location. The smell, as you enter and all the way through the hotel, with the exception of the bedrooms, there is a strong smell of cooking fat. This is enough to make potential customers leave. Really off putting when you come out of your romm for breakfast. Hence the extremely poor reviews on other websites (TA), you should really take note of what people are saying. In need of complete revamp. Probably the worst bed I have ever tried to sleep in, mattress very old and soft without any support whatsoever, I turned the mattress myself for the second night, but not much difference, (although revealed the mattress to be worn and stained). Breakfast time - Menu only two cooked choices on it, yet they had run out of one, we were the first to attend breakfast. I really don't understand that, cooked breakfast or kippers, sorry we don't have kippers?? Craster is not too far away. No selection of continental cheeses or shaved ham as printed on the menu. Overall decent B&B could easily be so much better.

We liked everything apart from the comments below about dislikes. Bedrooms very spacious. The cooked breakfast was superb, although the delicious scrambled egg portion was enough for three people. On arrival we were met by a man with a very unprofessional unwelcoming attitude. We were very disappointed that although there was a very nice dining room, the area set aside for eating an evening meal had a poor quality pub atmosphere. No complaint about any other member of staff. Although I have said I would recommed the hotel, I would advise any-one to consider having their evening meal elsewhere - no comment about the evening food as we did not try it.

Excellent staff, room and food. Sad and tired decor and worn carpets in the corridor to our bedroom. Definitly needs redecorating.
