The historic association with the RAF and the Hotel grounds
My room was a little tired looking and didn't reflect the price in my opinion
The reason for my visit was the historical connection with 617 Squadron but there's a lot more to this top-quality total. I'll start with the RAF connection. I arrived after visits to the BBMF at Coningsby and the 617 Sqn memorial in the centre of Woodhall Spa. The next day I was heading for East Kirkby. This hotel is ideally located as a base for a trip round the historic RAF sites of Lincolnshire. As you drive in, the first impression is of a truly classic building and it doesn't stop there because the interior is equally impressive. It is very easy to imagine the bomber crews using the building as their officers' mess 70 years. In fact I understand that serving RAF squadrons still use it regularly for functions. The centre piece of the RAF connection is obviously the Squadron Bar. It's not just a bar but place for remembrance. I'd recently visited the graves of several 617 sqn crew members in Holland - some of them had almost certainly drunk there. With a pint of Petwood Bomber in my hand I spent a long while studying the exhibits in that bar. My single room on the second floor looked out to the back of the building. It was well furnished clean, warm and quiet - what more do you want? I had a great breakfast and great food (try the handmade chips!) from the bar. Bar prices are on par with a pub and to me were very reasonable. The quality of service was excellent and the staff were all friendly. You really feel like a valued customer here. The grounds look magnificent but it was a bit early in the year to catch at their best. Apparently in about a month (mid-late March) they'll start to emerge from Winter and by mid-May will show their true glory. I think everyone involved in running this hotel should be very proud. It's a piece of our heritage and they are doing an outstanding job looking after it.
the history, the staff nothing was too much trouble, the whole atmosphere,.
more local dishes please
The link with the aviation history;
Used as a base for a number of RAF squadrons (including 617 (Dambusters) the hotel features a vast range of photos and memorabilia of the WW2 period, including the Officers' Bar which has a range of photos, equipment and documents.
Some of the facilities are in need up updating and a little tired in places (water staining in bathrooms etc) but this did not deter us from promising to return to this excellent location.
Sense of history: the Petwood was the Officers' Mess of the 617 Dambusters' Squadron in WW2 and much is preserved and displayed; location and grounds are superb, wonderful cozy atmosphere with log fires and oak pannelling inside; superbly prepared and presented food; excellent beers and wines; courteous, professional staff; really comfy bed; easy free car parking; close to Woodhall Spa's many attractions such as the England Golf HQ, Kinema in the Woods, Tea House in the Woods, excellent shops along Broadway and the natural beauty of the Lincolnshire Wolds, the River Witham - also close to Lincs Aviation Centre and RAF Heritage Flight.
Only downside was the grubby state of the carpet in our room and the anti-slip mat in the shower. Cannot understand why a hotel which puts so much effort into the presentation of its public areas, its restaurant and bars and has such professional staff should not see the obvious problem (ingrained dirt in the carpet, black mould on the anti-slip mat). Management clearly not watching these points - easily rectified by a carpet shampoo and some bleach for the mat. But those were the only minuses in an otherwise excellent and enjoyable stay (for our wedding anniversary).
The location , the history, the breakfast , the Dinner, afternoon tea ,so relaxing
The bedrooms do need a re-furb but everything is acceptable
Lovely gardens Friendly helpful staff Food excellent Quiet room with charming garden view Well equipped room
Bed OK but very soft Decor slightly tired in places No non-alcoholic wine in restaurant Sink mixer tap & dual-flush WC would be better Good size room which could easily accommodate 2 armchairs
Welcoming staff throughout the hotel. Lovely coal/log fires. Beautiful gardens. Great building with lots of history.
Setting was pleasant and the staff were helpful and very good. The food was good.
The bedroom was cold on entering tho' did warm up after turning on the radiator. The decor and comfort of the room was basic for the price - definitely needs updating and the bed was uncomfortable with cheap synthetic pillows.
The Petwood Hotel is full of historical significance and I have enjoyed my stay each time I have visited, the hotel needs a bit of TLC but please do not change this wonderful place
whats not to like
Beautiful setting, lovely room, polite staff and fantastic, made to order, fresh breakfast!
Log fires, comfortable lounge. Period features. Setting
Restaurant menu very limited choice, which hasn't changed in 8 months - no specials. Beds very hard and uncomfortable
Wonderful old building with character and lovely grounds. Enjoyed excellent food in the dining room and no hassle to leave when we were the only diners remaining.
Such a shame thst the dam buster bar wasn't open. Such atmosphere with all the old photos and the history. The bedroom was a good size but dated and in need of tlc. Needs repainting and carpet replacing.
The way in which the historic significance of the building (base for RAF during the war) was blended with up to date facilities. Public rooms were fresh and bright, bedroom had modern feel.
I lost an earring in my bathroom sink and their staff found it and sent it to me in the post!
Loved the history of this old building everything about this hotel is excellent would definitely visit again
The lighting in the drawing room in the evening was a but stark would have been better with softer lighting
Lovely old fashioned hotel with an interesting history. Warm welcome, helpful staff and excellent restaurant meal.
Room was smaller than anticipated and the bed not very comfortable
Old-fashioned ambience - style and historic connections; Attentive staff, particularly in restuarant Value for money
Over-intrusive musak in bar/lounge. Don't have problem with some light background music but how about some classical music which matches the ambience/decor?
Public rooms really nice ambience . Staff very friendly and helpful.
Nothing to dislike
the high standard of everything and everybody there, plus the connection with the wartime RAF gives youi huge kudos
Impressive entrance and interesting Dam Busters memorabilia. Good food and service in the restaurant for both dinner and breakfast.
Executive room was small with ordinary double bed (4ft 6 ins and creaky). Very basic small bathroom. Chiller unit in the bar below kept us awake as it switched on and off. On reporting our disappointment to reception the next day they were unapologetic and not really bothered.
The Hotel was excellent, comfortable quiet room, lovely grounds. We ate in the restaurant and the meal was very good. Very enjoyable stay.
