Room was clean, quiet and spacious. The building has lots of charming features including bedrooms that lock with a proper key! Receptionist really helpful in arranging my taxis for me. Breakfast was good and all very relaxing.
I couldn't find a thermostat and felt a little too warm in the night. Not a big deal though as the room was comfortable.
Staff excellent - cleanliness outstanding very nice place would go again but would eat out
Food - all food appeared processed
We just needed a bed for the night but when we realised how nice the hotel was, we asked if there was space for us for afternoon tea; this was immediately found, complete with delicious gluten-free options for me. All the staff were professional and friendly. We were sad not to be staying longer to try out the restaurant and spa which both looked good. We hope to stay again soon.
There was no-one at reception to retrieve our key at 11pm (but there were several parties going on in the hotel). A new toilet bowl is needed in room 74!
Nice location Staff friendly and helpful
Room was next to cleaning station so was woken quite early by staff coming and going
The overall quality & charm of the buildings steeped in history. Very comfortable throughout & would definitely recommend to friends. Would like to return soon for a longer stay giving me more time to explore the beautiful grounds & other facilities.
I found nothing to dislike in my short overnight stay.
Large rooms, lovely setting, close to wedding venues
No cable or sky channels
Large size of executive room, comfortable beds and amenities. Cheerful and friendly staff.
Minor things - lack of good light over mirror in main bedroom and lack of soap holder in bath and shower. Food in restaurant somewhat lacking in comparison with the excellent Lounge Bar Menus and Breakfasts, but very acceptable.
Polite attentive staff.
We had a great sized room with very comfortable bed. Decent sized wordrobe with light inside, great idea.
During our visit there was no internet access
The staff were very helpful and friendly, made us feel very welcome. The hotel had a very welcoming and friendly atmosphere. The grounds were very beautiful to walk around. The contemporary feel to the decor in the room and bathroom made it feel very luxurious and relaxing. The owners have worked very hard to give a very luxurious refurbishment to a beautiful building. Would very highly recommend a stay here.
My mattress was too soft for me, but that it a personal choice.
Facilities and staff excellent
Paying for breakfast - should be included in the price charged which is on the steep side
- Good location, set in nice grounds.
- very old fashioned decor. - lack of cleanliness in rooms and the hotel in general. - very poor nights sleep due to loud music until late at night. - Too expensive for the quality of the stay.
Friendliness, helpfulness and welcome of the staff.
Limited choice of ales, not real ale either. poor and very pricy.
size and comfort of room Free Wi fi cleanliness ease of access for disabled guests.
No walk in shower in bathroom
excellent room, fantastic bed and en suite facilities. great breakfast.
The rooms are well appointed and clean. The overall design and feel to the hotel is modern and feels of a good quality. Most of the staff are young enthusiastic and happy to help.
The manager constantly wants to be involved with each group, emparting his words of "wisdom" most of the time without listening. Sunday lunch: Part of the dining room is situated across the hall from the buffet so you have to traipse back and forward with your plates. This is sometimes a bit uncomfortable as you are sometimes having to give way to people checking in or kids running around the lobby. The buffet doesn't have a great deal of flavour. I would guess the ingredients haven't come from good local suppliers.
The location is rural and peaceful, but close to Chelmsford. The cooked breakfast was above average.
The room was small and cluttered with an ill-fitting bathroom door that offered limited privacy. There was insufficient clothes hanging space because so much of the wardrobe was taken up by the ironing board and iron. Dinner was below average, and some of the bar staff need further training.
Small hotel great for a wedding or similar. Not at all pretentious and staff key asset especially the Manager. Bar staff also very good keeping right balance between managing drunken guests and looking after customers. Especially loved the heated outdoor pool for my morning swim in the rain!
The room was very well equipped and the beds comfortable. Staff were very helpful and really tried to please. We ate breakfast which was a little burnt, but not to the extent it could not be eaten, on the whole very nice.
Shower in the bathroom I found confusing and when not wearing glasses to read instructions very dangerous as water was scalding hot.
Great food Great room Lovely hotel
Little too limited on when you can use the spa Had to wait a long time to check in
Decor, food, friendly staff
All staff help you feel totally relaxed. They can't do enough for you. The pool and facilities outside are lovely.Rooms are immaculate and have a homely feel. The food is great too! The whole experience is superb. I would love to go every weekend!
I loved the entrance and the surroundings and the staff. The bathroom was good.
The room. I was hugely disappointed: dark, sombre, dated furniture, dark brown carpet that didn't look clean, old-fashioned dark green gloomy curtains. Shocked that if you pay well over £100 per night you get filthy windows and such poor decor and furnishings. Breakfast disappointing too.
Paying £13.50 per person for breakfast, when challenged, we were told if we booked direct breakfast would be free of charge! Many of our party were booked in direct but these charges were not shown on their own web site!! Considering the number of guests in our party, the manager although very polite, was unreasonable with these charges, which caused considerable embarassement as many people were my guests for which I had paid for and I had to explain to them why they had to pay! I will not be returning to this hotel and will advise others NOT to stay there.
