All the 22 bedrooms are en suite, some have a bath with shower and others a shower only. As the hotel has been carefully designed from 2 separate houses, the bedrooms are individual in decor and size. This is not a characterless, modern purpose built hotel often seen today. We like to think it is a building from a grander era that possesses charm and character. Each room has a colour remote control TV, hot drinks tray and telephone. Hairdryers, iron and ironing boards are available upon request.
The Buxton Opera House, located next to The Portland, has undergone major refurbishment work over recent years and is now respected as one of the country's leading theatres. A vast range of shows, performances and plays are put on at the Opera House, from The Chinese State Circus to Abba tribute bands through to Madame Buttefly and touring plays. The Opera House's programme is designed to suit all tastes.
The newly restored Pavilion Gardens sits across the road from the Portland Hotel. Apart from the attractiveness of the gardens themselves, numerous events take place in the Pavilion Gardens complex itself. Vintage car auctions, farmers markets, record fairs and the ever popular antiques fairs are just a few events that attract visitors.
Buxton sits proudly alongside Britain's first, and the World's 2nd most popular National Park. The Peak District formed in the early 1950's after workers from the nearby cities demanded a place to walk after toiling in the factories and mills during the week. It is a rich tapestry of colour sitting at the foothills of the Pennines. It is almost 2 national parks in one. To the north lies the mysterious moorlands of the Dark Peak with its harsh grit stone and 'Edges', and to the south lies the softer, greener landscape of the White Peak with limestone walls and sparkling rivers running through wooded valleys alongside grand stately homes.
2004 saw the opening of the University of Derby at the former Royal Devonshire Hospital in Buxton. This university complex sits in the centre of the town, only 200 metres from the Portland Hotel. The university is confident in attracting up to 2000 students to the town and the hotel is ideally located for students attending interviews, visiting parents and academics working at the university.
Located close to the Opera House, overlooking Pavillion Gardens.
